Alfea

Personal

    Faragonda
Voiced by: Roberta Greganti (Italian), Emanuela Rossi (Italian Movies), Rachael Lillis (4Kids), Kari Wahlgren (Nickelodeon), Julia Martínez (Spanish)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_np816jemy51ttp48eo5_1280.jpg

Miss Faragonda is the headmistress for Alfea, school for fairies, and once a fairy godmother.

  • Big Good: Out of all the characters in the series, she has served as a guide and strategist for the Winx and is appeared in every season and movies.
  • Cool Old Lady: She is well respected among her students at Alfea.
  • Eccentric Mentor: Keeps plenty of secrets to let the Winx find out things on their own and doesn't hesitate to let them go into danger is she thinks they will come out of it stronger.
  • Expy: Her personality and role of helping Bloom on her quests is similar to that of Albus Dumbledore from the Harry Potter series.
  • Forced Transformation: In the third season, she is turned into a tree at the end of fight with Valtor, but she gets better.
  • Glasses of Aging: Faragonda, the elderly headmistress of Alfea, wears small, horn-rimmed glasses. Because of Continuity Snarl, she initially averts this trope but then plays it straight. The third season episode "The Wizards' Challenge" reveals the first glimpse of what Faragonda looked like as a young adult and she has big, round glasses. However, "The Secret of the Lost Kingdom" shows a magical illustration of an adult (of indeterminate age) Faragonda and her glasses are nowhere in sight. A later Continuity Reboot rehauls her appearance but still has her young self not needing glasses. To sum up, from the first movie onward Faragonda's glasses are used to establish her as a senior citizen.
  • Impossible Hourglass Figure: Yes, also her.
  • Irony: She doesn't have a fairy form herself. If she has one, it was never shown onscreen.
  • The Mentor: Her days as a hero are over, so she wants to pass on her knowledge to her students.
  • Never Mess with Granny: She's old, but that doesn't stop her from defeating any evil that comes in her path or threatens her students. She is still an extremely powerful fairy, whom none should underestimate, with a vast array of magical abilities at her disposal. She could create illusions, shields that are powerful enough to block even Valtor's spells and fire energy blasts that could send her opponent flying considerable distances away.
  • Older Hero vs. Younger Villain: Her fight against Valtor. She loses, though she puts up a hell of a fight.
  • Older Than They Look: Implied. While Faragonda looks to be a woman in her 50s or 60s, season 6 reveals that she has served as Headmistress of Alfea for 100 years, putting her somewhere over a century old.
  • Pretty in Mink: Faragonda's sleeping gown is lined with fur and the matching shoes have furballs on them. In the comics her winter coat has fur as well.
  • Progressively Prettier: In Season 6 and 7 she is seen slightly less old and more cute as seen here.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She's the headmistress of Alfea. She is generally kind to her students, though she is willing to put up with no nonsense from them, and will discipline them as she sees fit. As well, she does not take kindly from students from other schools causing trouble at Alfea either and will take action if necessary.
  • Weak Boss, Strong Underlings: As the Winx earn more powerful transformations each season, they become the strong underlings for Faragonda's weak boss. Faragonda, a Retired Badass in her own right, is the elderly Headmistress of the fairy school the Winx attend and the one who assigns them missions. It's unclear the exact point when their dynamic shifts but given that Faragonda is unable to call on her fairy transformations, it's probably fairly early on.

    Griselda
Voiced by: Franca Lumachi (Italian), Su Meredith (4kids), Susanne Blakeslee (Nickelodeon)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/griselda_casting_a_spell.jpg

Griselda is the assistant headmistress of Alfea. She is also the Head of Discipline at Alfea.

  • Barrier Warrior: As the teacher of self defense, Griselda is well-versed in defense magic.
  • Brainy Brunette
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: At the beginning of Season 1 she is more stern than usual with Stella and Bloom, but later becomes more kind to the Winx while at the same time remaining strict.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She is very gruff and strict towards students, but is generally kind to all the fairies at the school as she is shown to care immensely for them.
  • Limited Wardrobe: She often wears a navy blue, smoky blue, or red sailor-type dress.
  • Sour Prude: She doesn’t much like the midriff-exposing look of nearly all the students.
Palladium: Before we can send you, we have to suit you up in the appropriate attire. You see, the weather on Sparx is quite brutal, so I'm afraid open-toe shoes and exposed midriffs simply will not do.
Griselda: If I had my way, this would be the year-round dress code.
    Faragonda: Oh, Griselda.

    Palladium
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/palladium.jpg
Voiced by: Vittorio Guerrieri and Stefano Onofri (Italian), Sebastian Arcelus (4kids), Mitchell Whitfield (Nickelodeon)

Professor Palladium is an elf who is a professor at Alfea. He teaches Potionology, technical charms and runs the simulator.

  • No-Respect Guy: Mostly in Season 1 where he was not a very confident teacher and although very nice, the students did not respect him.
  • Our Elves Are Different: He looks like the Elves depicted in the The Lord of the Rings books and the movie adaptations, both in his having pointed ears, his hairstyle and his facial appearance. They also possess the ability to evolve their forms as a sort of limited form of shapeshifting
  • Progressively Prettier: In-Universe. In the second season he appears to be much more confident and muscular, having evolved his form since he's an elf.
  • Recurring Character: He and Wizgiz are the only teachers that have appeared in every season so far.

    Wizgiz
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wizgiz_s7.png
Voiced by: Mino Caprio/Luigi Ferraro (Italian), Pete Zarustica (4kids), Dee Bradley Baker (Nickelodeon)

Professor Wizgiz is a somewhat eccentric leprechaun professor who teaches at Alfea. He teaches the art of changing from one form to another, which is also called Metamorphosimbiosis.

  • Really 700 Years Old: He's over a thousand years old. You probably wouldn't know this just by looking at him.
  • Recurring Character: He and Palladium are the only teacher that are appeared in every season so far.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Wizgiz, as the professor of Metamorphosymbiosis, is able to shape shift his body into form he requires.

    Avalon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/char_19365.jpg
Voiced by: Stefano Crescentini (Italian), Marc Thompson (4kids), Michael Dorn (Nickelodeon)

A Paladin who teaches at Alfea. His class of Magic-philosophy is a mix of magic and philosophy.

  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: The real Avalon is seen briefly last time throughout season 3 without making any major appearances.
  • Cool Teacher: He is an excellent teacher and is willing to help anyone who asks or when he sees that they are in need and is perspective. His students trust him a lot and often want to impress or please him
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: He has scars on his face that appeared when his facade was revealed.
  • Hot Teacher: His (female) students find him handsome, especially Bloom.
  • The Mole: He is a Darkar's creation, a fake double of the real Avalon, prisoner in Darkar's palace. In the special adaptation, he was simply Darker himself in disguise.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: The fate of fake Avalon is unknown. He was presumably destroyed when Darkar was destroyed.

Student

    Amaryl
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amaryl_s7.png
Voiced by: Milvia Bonacini (Italian), Rachael Lillis (4kids), Georgina Cordova (Nickelodeon)

A fairy student who attends Alfea.

  • Alpha Bitch: In the early season, she is hardly the nicest girl at the school, though, often whining and complaining.
  • Living Prop: So far, Amaryl has appeared in every seasons except for Season 6.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: To Stella in Season 2 (for unknown reasons). She even had tried to attack her in one of their classes, but was stopped by Professor Palladium and almost got expelled because of her actions.
  • Ungrateful Bitch: She's scolded the Specialists when they saved her life from a troll, since they let the troll escape.

    Galatea
Voiced by: Francesca Manicone (Italian), Erica Schroeder (4kids), Jennifer Hale (Nickelodeon)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_thing_1.jpg

Princess Galatea is the Princess of Musa's home world, Melody.

  • Broken Angel: Briefly, when Icy froze and broke her wings to distract Musa from their getaway from Alfea's library. They'd set the library on fire, which forces Musa to save her friend instead of chasing down the Trix. Luckily, Musa gained her Enchantix form and healed her wings with the fairy fust.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Aster season 3, she made only a cameo apearance in Season 5.
  • Magic Music: Galatea's powers are also related to music and sound waves like Musa, but specifically speaking, hers are melody.
  • Nice Girl: She appears to be a friendly person.

    Krystal
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/krystal.jpg
Voiced by: Francesca Rinaldi (Italian), Cymphonique Miller (Nickelodeon)

Princess Krystal is a fairy who attends Alfea and is also the Princess of Linphea, which is Flora's realm.

  • Childhood Friends: With Helia. She also assure Flora that are just friends.
  • Healing Hands: Krystal has an immense knowledge for healing. However, it was unable to restore Sky's memories, because the Pendant of Eraklyon blocked her healing powers.
  • Innocently Insensitive: She can be oblivious, as it took her awhile to figure out Helia's relationship with Flora and when she reintroduced Diaspro to Sky in hopes of reviving his memories. But, when she realizes the problems she has caused, she makes the effort to fix them and also tries to reassure the ones who have been hurt that there is nothing going on.
  • Plucky Girl: Krystal appears to be a fun-loving, friendly and helpful girl.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: A sweet pink-haired girl.

Cloudtower

    Griffin
Voiced by: Antonella Giannini (Italian), Carol Jacobanis (4kids), Grey DeLisle (Nickelodeon)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/griffin_season_6.png

Miss Griffin is the headmistress of Cloudtower, school for witches. She believes in spreading the witchiness of witches to all her students, and believes witches to be superior to fairies. She's a former member of the Ancient Witch Coven.

  • Anti-Villain: Although she started off as somewhat of an antagonist, indirectly encouraging the Trix in their power-struggle against the Winx, Griffin was eventually revealed to be a woman of sound moral principles, and aided the Winx numerous times in their fight against the forces of evil.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She certainly looks dark and evil, but she does have a noble heart.
  • Demoted to Extra: The Secret of the Lost Kingdom and beyond, though she makes a return in season 6.
  • Heel–Face Turn: In Season 3, it is revealed that as a young witch, she had once teamed up with Valtor to work for the Ancestral Witches. By her own admission, she wasn't willing to cross the line to mass genocide and planetary destruction.
  • Hot Witch: In her young days. She seems like Darcy, but with purple hair.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite her stern, no-nonsense and seemingly indifferent demeanor, Griffin is genuinely a caring Headmistress who would defend her students willingly if threatened.
  • Limited Wardrobe: She is always seen with the same purple dress.
  • Moral Myopia: In season 1, she had no problem with the Trix going out and attacking fairies. In fact, she encouraged this kind of behavior in her students. The only reason she expelled them was the fact they kept getting caught and it embarrassed her. Likewise, in Season 2, when the Winx attend Cloudtower for a few episodes, she shown to still be encouraging her students to gain power by causing mayhem and harnessing their inner darkness.
  • Never Mess with Granny: Old as she is, that doesn't stop her from being very powerful. She is able to open massive portal or tunnels for teleportation, creating magical barriers, and also using her magic to shoot powerful magic blasts.
  • Older Hero vs. Younger Villain: Her fight against the Trix, which she loses.
  • Pet the Dog: Was the only witch beside Lucy who was nice to Mirta during the first season (disciplining the Trix for attacking her and actually congratulating her for doing well on a test).
  • Purple Is the New Black: She has purple hair that is pulled up into a shape similar to that of pointy hats worn by fairytale witches, with two lighter purple strands on either side. She wears heavy makeup around her eyes and wears an ankle length dark purple dress with a high collar and dark purple shoes.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She's the headmistress of Cloudtower.
  • The Worf Effect: She's beaten by the Trix at the beginning of season 6 to demonstrate how powerful they've become, unlike before when they needed the dragon flame from Bloom to do so.

    Mirta
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mirtas2.png

Voiced by: Gaia Bolognesi (Italian), Amy Palant (4kids), Natalie Lander (Nickelodeon), Pilar Puebla (Spanish, Season 1), Teresa de Paz (Spanish, Season 2)

Mirta is—or was—a witch attending Cloudtower. She is not highly respected there, however, as she does not hold the core values of a witch that her peers do. Currently, however, she transfers to Alfea, where she fits in better. Mirta is a sweet witch who would rather have fairies and witches get along, whose personality is similar to Flora's, with a good head on her shoulders. At Cloudtower, Mirta was also very alone, not fitting in, however nice she may be to everyone else.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: As sweet and nice as she is, she still started out as a witch-and can still cast highly-destructive spells using the Absolute Power of the Ancestral Witches if provoked enough.
  • Butt-Monkey: She has often been ridiculed by the Trix at Cloud Tower because of her opinion that Witches and Fairies are not very different from each other and that they can be friends.
  • The Conscience: She tries to be this for Lucy, with limited success.
  • Cute Witch: At least until she becomes a fairy in season 2.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Sure she's a witch and has a dark color scheme, but she's very nice and does her best to help Lucy and the Winx.
  • Demoted to Extra: Some of the events from season 1 revolving around her character, culminating in leaving Cloudtower for Alfea, suggested that she was going to be the sixth Winx girl. For some unexplained reason and despite having a good friendship with all of them (especially Flora), she never became part of the group. She does manage to get a cameo multiple times, establishing she's still around.
  • Forced Transformation: This becomes a story point in the first season where she is turned into a pumpkin halfway through by Icy for both foiling her plan to break Bloom's mind and making an illusion so terrifying that it scares Darcy and Stormy and keeps them from killing the other Winx. The rest of the season contains several references to Flora trying to figure out how to change Mirta back; she manages to do so in the second-to-last episode, though she plays it up as being very difficult to do.
  • Master of Illusion: She can conjure up images to fool her opponents.
  • Nice Girl: She is a sweet and shy girl who would rather have fairies and witches all get along. Her personality is similar to Flora's, with a good head on her shoulders. At Cloud Tower, Mirta was not fitting in, though she was nice to everyone else there.
  • Perky Goth: Even through all the pain she goes through, she tries to stay positive.
  • Spanner in the Works: She derails the Trix's scheme to trick Bloom into thinking she was descended from the Ancient Witches. Later, when she's a pumpkin, she spots the Trix's nightmare monster and warns the Winx, allowing them to prepare for it.

    Lucy
Voiced by: Milvia Bonacini (Italian), Rachael Lillis (4Kids), Jessica DiCicco (Nickelodeon), Rosa Vivas (Spanish)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lucynick_6.png

Lucy is a witch attending Cloudtower. She isn't all that evil, but she's not exactly the nicest person around, either. Her desire to be popular is her biggest fault and blinds her.

  • Adaptational Attractiveness: She's far more attractive in the Nick remake.
  • Adaptational Villainy: In the comics, she's a loyal minion to the Trix.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Her last apparition is in season 3.
  • Hollywood Thin: In-show, anyway. She is thinner than the other girls and could be considered underweight, if not anorexic.
  • Ineffectual Loner: She's always trying to prove herself exceptional, but whenever she does anything alone she completely fails.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: When trying to become more like the Trix she becomes hostile to Mirta, her only friend. By season 2 she's made up with Mirta, but is still doesn't want to work with fairies.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Is the least attractive human girl in the series by virtue of being the only one who doesn't look like a supermodel.
