Eden Corporation

    In general
A game company created by Augustus Albright which released Magnolia Online.
  • Meaningful Name: In Bible, Eden was the name of paradise. This matches Albright's plan to create a paradise in Magnolia Online.
  • Unwitting Pawn: The whole corporation is used by Albright in only one purpose - to create digital utopia in Magnolia Online.

Augustus Albright

"When I was a child, I was always scared of dying. I had terrifying dreams of the nothingness that most likely awaited me. Deep down inside me I knew. The afterlife isn't real. It's all a lie. A fairy tale. A branch of hope we can cling to until we inevitably fall. But now, humans need no longer fear death. For I have created for them a true afterlife. A place where we can all live together, for eternity. My Eden. It cost me my life to prove this technology works. But now, Eden may welcome all."
Creator of the Magnolia Online and the series' Big Bad. He's worshipped as a god by Ministry of Light. He presumably died before the events of Season 1, but turned out to be still alive as some sort of AI.
  • Affably Evil: To Valera, though it's implied that it's only an act. He is always very polite to her and even cheers her up at one point.
  • All for Nothing: His plan to create Digital Utopia is full of holes and unable to execute. While with his technology he can create the Utopia and allow people to live in it, they wouldn't survive it. When he trapped Florence in VR Reality by drugging him and using a special chair to put him into a coma, the latter almost died because of dehydration and starvation. Even Albright himself is only able to live in game because of Brain in a Jar and artificial life support. It's just not possible to make that much technology to allow millions of people to live in VR and survive.
  • Alliterative Name: Augustus Albright.
  • Archnemesis Dad: His children despise him after they found out that he's alive and wants to destroy the world. They started to fight in game, trying to stop each other.
  • Bad Boss: Though he tries to look like a Benevolent Boss, he actually brainwashes his followers and often abuses them mentally in secret.
  • Benevolent Boss: He tries to look like that, but isn't like this at all.
  • Biblical Bad Guy: He's the 666 Beast - a powerful entity worshipped by people, who plans to rule them and destroy the world.
  • Biblical Motifs: He's very strongly associated with Apocalypse. He plans to create the paradise for people in game, which is a reference to New Jerusalem, and wants to destroy the world with fire. Additionaly, him dropping a Moon on players at Season 1 finale is also a part of the Apocalypse.
  • Big Bad: After being a Greater-Scope Villain for three seasons and acting only through his pawns and followers, he eventually becomes the main villain of Season 4 and 5, though he still does very little by himself.
  • Brain in a Jar: His head in real life is located in tub filled with fluid and keeping it alive.
  • Cerebus Knight: Since his debut in Season 1 finale, the series has been becoming more and more darker.
  • The Chessmaster: He manipulated Eden Corporation, elitists and most players into strictly following his plan.
  • Cool Chair: At one time he was seen sitting on a chair resembling throne that was floating in the ear.
  • The Corrupter:
    • He serves as one to Valera, gradually driving her insane and leading her into fanaticism and extremism, changing her from a Nice Girl with I Just Want to Have Friends attitude into mentally unstable Necessary Evil Hypocrite.
    • He's also implied to do something to Alyona at one point, as flashbacks show her to be a normal girl and a friend of Dieterich. Now, she's a fanatic with Moral Myopia.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: He has a Greek god physique, pale skin and dark hair.
  • Expy:
  • A God Am I: He considers himself the new Messiah of humanity, leading them to the paradise he created in Magnolia Online.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: For first three seasons. As the creator of Magnolia Online, he is responsible for all events of the webcomic, and also being responsible for destruction of first game in Season 1, trapping Florence and Valera in VR reality in Season 2 (thus indirectly turning Risa into a villain by the end of the season), blocking the bridge in Season 2 and 3 through Valera. He eventually becomes the Big Bad in Season 4.
  • Hypocrite:
    • He destroys the first game because the players fight with each other, but orders to hunt all of those who are not members of the Ministry of Light.
    • The game is meant to be played for fun, without elites, but he tries to create Digital Utopia in it and those who disagree or oppose him are immediately banned from playing.
    • He despises elitists, but is very rich himself and certainly using the fact to his advantage.
      • Additionaly, he gives the Artifacts mostly to the rich players, who are the elite's children. Even though he later takes them back and gives them to his own underlings, with that, he creates another elite.
    • He dislikes the idea of the rich people forcing their children to continue their legacy and often treat them badly. He has been neglecting his own children for years, and they eventually also started playing Magnolia Online, using the same mechanics that he uses.
  • Jerkass Gods: He is basically a god of Magnolia Online and is worshipped as such by Ministry of Light.
  • Light Is Not Good: White is his Colour Motif and he serves as the series Big Bad and Greater-Scope Villain at the same time.
  • Married to the Job: He has been so focused on his game that his wife eventually left him. He seemed to had good relationship with his children, though, until he started to crusade to take over Magnolia Online.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • His first name means "majestic" in Latin.
    • His surname comes from Germanic and means "noble light".
  • Mr. Fanservice: He's quite muscled and well-built, and his outfit in game almost shows his entire chest.
  • Not Quite Dead: He died in the real world, but Eden Corporation saved his head and because of that he still can play the game.
  • Obliviously Evil: He doesn't seem to notice that terrorism, hacking and abduction aren't exactly the best way of creating a better world.
  • Pet the Dog: He calls off rewards for Risa's and Florence's heads after they decide to relax in the game for some time before fighting him again.
  • Pride: As an obvious Expy of Lucifer, he is a charismatic cult leader believing, that he's meant to save the world. Too bad he sucks at it.
  • Satanic Archetype: In a few ways. He serves as The Corrupter to Valera, Alyona and Hardmann, driving the first more and more insane throughout the series. He's also clearly based on Lucifer, serving as the Beast of 666 (sometimes associated with Satan) and associated with light and beauty. Going further, his charisma and charm also resemble The Devil from Paradise Lost.
  • Villain Has a Point: He's right about how the elitists destroy the world and how parents often hurt their children because of their legacy. He doesn't seem to remember how he treated his own children.
  • Visionary Villain: He wants to create a digital utopia in Magnolia Online without elitists so that anyone could live there happily. Sounds awfully like a comunism, doesn't it? And will probably work the same...
  • Walking Spoiler: It's really hard to mention him in series events' context without revealing that he's the Big Bad.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He wants to create digital utopia in Magnolia Online, but, in order to do that, he plans to destroy the real world.

Amelia Adelaide

"I'll do anything for the man I love."
A moderator of Magnolia Online. She secretly works for Ministry of Light.
  • Alliterative Name: Amelia Adelaide.
  • Ambiguously Bi: She admitts she's in love with Augustus, but in one scene in Season 4 she looks at her avatar and thinks she's cute, while blushing. The whole scene is quite weird.
  • Attention Whore: In her debut scene during the Whitehaven Tournament she asks the players if they love her. They do.
  • Biblical Bad Guy: She's a Whore of Babylon - a beautiful woman driven by her love/lust towards Augustus.

  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Her avatar in game Has pink hair and is considered by players to be one of the prettiest people in game.

Albright Family

    In general
A family of Augustus Albright.
  • Alliterative Family: All of their names start with the letter "A".
  • Dysfunctional Family: They weren't the happiest family. Albright neglected his wife and children because of his Married to the Job attitude. His wife eventually left him because of this, and Albright himself didn't care for his children, leaving them alone when they were still very young. In current times, they fight each other in Magnolia Online, trying to save the world - each with their own vision.
  • Parental Neglect: Augustus neglected Allen and Alexandra, being more focused on his game. When he died, they were left alone and eventually started to leave on their own.

Twin children of Augustus. They play the game as Glitch Explorers and appear several times when observing Easen.
  • All-Powerful Bystander: As Glitch Explorers, they are far more powerful than ordinary players, displaying powers similar to their father. However, in the first three season, they mostly observe events, without doing anything. They only start to act at the ending of Season 4.
  • Archnemesis Dad: They fight Augustus in Magnolia Online, trying to stop him from taking over the world.
  • Big Damn Heroes: They save Diederich and Luciase from Augustus' VR trap.
  • Creepy Twins: Subverted. They give that vibe, but it's just for effect.
  • Expy: Word of God states that they're based on Twedledee and Twedleedum from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
  • Large Ham: All things they do are extremely theatrical, such as speaking in rhymes.
  • Missing Mom: Their mother left because Augustus dedicated himself completely to the game.
  • Transplant: Sort of. Their names appear in Merryweather's previous work, Magnolia Online; however, the characters named like this are Vanilla and Valerius from Ministry. Nevertheless, their concepts are still quite similar.

  • Heteronormative Crusader: He absolutely hates gays and tries to marry Florence to a girl, so he can continue his legacy.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: He despises Florence's sexuality and abuses him because of it. It's also implied he still believes in old inheritance rules where the son inherits parent's estate, instead of daughter, as he has a second child, but doesn't seem to even consider passing the company to her.
