Main Characters

    Sui

Sui

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sui_7.png
A strange girl who runs Kutsurogi-no-Yado, an inn across the city, with her sloth partner Neri.
  • Bifauxnen: She almost looks like a boy, due to the way she dresses and behaves.
  • Foil: To Shida, both in appearance and in personality. Sui is completely the opposite to her mature and calm personality, and her bright hair colour contrasts to hers. She also contrasts with Neri's mature personality, and she is the boke half of Boke and Tsukkomi Routine.
  • The Gadfly: In occasions she likes to tease Neri, much to the latter's dismay.
  • Genki Girl: She is hyperactive and often cheerful throughout the manga. It just happens that she is considered a complete antithesis to the more quiet and mature Shida, another of her friends.
  • Invisible Parents: Sui's parents are never seen or brought up in the story.
  • Lady Looks Like a Dude: She has a short hair and wears boyish clothes all the time, which makes her resembling more of a tomboyish-looking girl.
  • Lazy Bum: Unlike the diligent Neri, Sui is lazy and is not fond of doing things like her school homework and chores.
  • Minor Living Alone: She's a preteen girl who lives most of her life parentless and with an absent adult company on her side. She is mostly taken care of by Neri, her pet sloth, something that is the closest there is to an "adult figure" for her.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Spends most of her appearance in the manga with a bright, smiling expression to her face, owing to her cheerful personality.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: She is the tomboy to Shida's girly girl, but Played With as she is revealed to be more into feminine things like cute animals and toys.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Despite acting as a tomboy girl, down to some of her mannerisms and her masculine clothing, she is shown to have a feminine side, as shown when she has liking to cute animals including Neri.

    Neri

Neri

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/neri_3.png
A talking sloth and Sui's companion. Alongside her, he runs the inn Kutsurogi-no-Yado.
  • Irony: In-universe he is considered to be a sloth, but his entire appearance and biology has nothing to do with the said animal itself.
  • Loyal Animal Companion: This to Sui, as he accompanies her on their adventure around the city.
  • Parental Substitute: Serves as one to Sui, due to having Invisible Parents, but his small size limits him into doing more difficult mundane tasks like carrying her back home when she fell ill.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: So cute that even Sui in some chapters use him as a Cuddle Bug.
  • She's a Man in Japan: At least in the first few chapters of the scanlated manga, where it erroneously puts Neri's gender as female, in spite of him being actually a male. Though chapter 10 onwards rectified this problem by correcting his gender in the dialogues, effectively subverting it.
  • Talking Animal: Like many animals in Tetsunagi, he can talk.

    Shida

Shida

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shida.png
A university student who takes interest in the Kutsurogi-no-Yado inn, after she went into troubles during her transit. She becomes a friend to Sui and Neri.
  • Bespectacled Cutie: She wears a glasses that resembles a smartphone in the future and is seen as cute and smart.
  • But Now I Must Go: Near the end of Chapter 15 Shida finally parts ways with Sui and Neri after seeing the concert and the fireworks, who was happy of her experience of hanging out with both of them.
  • Fish out of Water: Inverted. Shida is a grad school student from another planet who is initially not accustomed to the very technologically-anachronistic Tetsunagi Island. Being accustomed with the luxuries of futuristic technology like her multi-use card (as a transit pass, a debit card and even a Tracking Device), Shida is immediately stuck with realisation that Tetsunagi is a reminiscent of civilization from early 21st Century thanks to obsolete, ancient technologies that still exist in this era like paper bills and coins, radios and manually-done hotel reservations.
  • Goal in Life: Her planned career in the world of space development, though she did not have any concrete, set plans once she graduates.
  • Goggles Do Something Unusual: Her glasses is the equivalent of a future smartphone, as it allowed her to do mundane things like checking mails and even used it as a GPS tracker when she locates Sui and Neri in another city.
  • Token Adult: Within the main cast, Shida is the only adult human amongst the trionote , given that she's a university student.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: She is the girly girl to Sui's tomboy, who has a longer hair and wears more feminine outfits in contrast to the tomboyish Sui. But it is Played With, as she is a grad school student who has a planned goal of working in the engineering industry, specifically space development, which makes her more of a Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak.

Other Characters

    Mori

Mori

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/polar_bear_twilight_star_sui_and_neri.jpg
A lone polar bear that Sui and Neri firstly encountered. Known for collecting ancient pieces of mundane tech and repairs it as a hobby and as a part of his business.
  • The Collector: Of Lost Technology. He has been collecting ancient pieces of mundane tech that have been broken and settling the dust for many decades and fixes them for his hobby and his own business, including microwaves, televisions and even handheld gaming consoles, which are considered artifacts of the past. Though due to how ancient they are, it's a certainty that no one buys them for real, owing to their "lost-in-time" nature.
  • Gentle Giant: Despite his intimidating, imposing nature, as natural for any predatorial polar bears, Mori is never seen as a threat and is friendly towards others.
  • Mr. Fixit: He actively fixes tech (usually tech that is ancient in this story's era) that he salvages and adds it to his collection to sell for his shop.
  • Oh, Crap!: Subverted. How his first interaction with Sui and Neri happened when they entered in an alleyway, temporarily causing an ominous atmosphere around them. Though Sui actively subverts this trope when she greets him happily.

    Den

Den

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/den_twilight_star_sui_and_neri.png
A fox repairman in the underground city of District 7.
  • Mole Men: Due to spending most of his life in the underground city, Den is not used to the above surface and the life within it.
  • Mr. Fixit: He is an expert in fixing broken appliances, particularly air conditioners, which is his main career.

    Yurayura's Grandson

Yurayura's Grandson

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yurayuras_grandson.png
The unnamed grandson of Yurayura from another planet who visited Earth in meeting Ton.
  • Fish out of Water: While he still looks the same as an Earth human, he was never born on Earth but from another planet, who worked in managing that planet's infrastructure. Played Straight when he reveals it to the trio that he has never set foot on Earth before in his entire life.
  • The Nameless: Has no name when he appears in the story.

    Yurayura

The best friend of Ton and the grandfather of the unnamed man Sui and Neri encountered.
  • Best Friend: With Ton, where a bronze statue of him and the dog is seen standing within the train station.
  • Posthumous Character: He is already dead in the story by the time Sui and Neri helped his grandson into reaching Ton's home, where Ton is also already dead for a long time.
  • Repetitive Name: Yurayura.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: Posthumously, his presence still lingers across Tetsunagi, where the statue of his younger version of himself and Ton is erected in the train station, along with the charm that sits on its palm.

    Ton

Ton

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ton_3.png
Click to show his younger version (as a statue) here.
Yurayura's best friend in Tetsunagi's Souvenir District, who once served as a blacksmith, specialising in creating charms and souvenirs.
  • Eyepatch of Power: He wore an eyepatch to his right eye (pictured below), emphasising his position as a souvenir artisan.
  • Posthumous Character: He is already dead before the events of the story, something that Yurayura's grandson is completely unaware of at first.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: Alongside Yurayura, his presence still exists posthumously in the form of their bronze statue that was built within the train station. Yurayura's grandson even attempted to find him at Ton's home when he, Sui, Neri and Shida met Ton's granddaughter, unbeknownst that he's dead for a long time.

    Ton's Granddaughter

Ton's Granddaughter

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tons_granddaughter.png
Ton's granddaughter, who works as a florist.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: Partly gender-flipped. Unlike Ton who is a blacksmith with a stern expression, his granddaughter is a florist with a sweet personality.

    Teenage Boy

Teenage Boy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/teenage_boy.png
An unnamed boy that Sui and Neri meet in another city.
  • Delinquent: Downplayed. At least by his looks and his temperament, where he can be passed off as one. But his personality is nowhere in the realms of standard delinquency.
  • Foil: Chapters 10 to 12 shows this towards Sui:
    • The places they live. Sui lives in Tetsunagi, where it is a more colourful, vibrant community for humans and animals alike. The teenage boy lives in a futuristic city where Talking Animals are completely non-existent and it is, as shown with the thug that they encountered, crime-ridden due to police being in absentia across the whole city.
    • Their hair colours that reflect their personalities. Sui has blonde hair that fits with her cheerful personality, while the teenage boy has black hair that fits with his brash, straightforward personality.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: He has a collection of robots stored inside his house, with all of them going through signs of age and decay, as well as a smart watch on his wrist.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Despite being a stereotypical delinquent who acts brashly, he warms up to others once someone is on his side. He goes so far in showing concern to Sui and Neri, who were about to be attacked by a thug at the train station in another city, as well as warning her that Neri would cause attention due to his nature as a talking animal.

Spoiler Characters

WARNING: These characters all contain unmarked spoilers which are impossible to talk about without spoiling the story. Proceed with caution!

    Monkey Researcher

Monkey Researcher

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/monkey_researcher_twilight_star_sui_and_neri.png
A monkey that Sui encounters with the Old Lady beside him. It is revealed that he's one of Tetsunagi's ancestors.
  • Dead All Along: Like the old lady, he's dead for a long time before the events of the story, as he and the old lady are just mirages that Sui encountered.
  • Famous Ancestor: One of Tetsunagi's distant ancestors, who founded the island along with countless others including the old lady many years before the start of the manga.
  • Funny Animal: Like many animals in Tetsunagi, he can talk, walk and act like human. Justified as he's one of the few animal ancestors to birth half of the island's animal community, making him at least partly responsible for the existence of sentient animals co-mingling with humans in the island.
  • Walking Spoiler: It is hard to talk about him without mentioning that he's one of the island's ancestors.

    Old Lady

Old Lady

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/old_lady_twilight_star_sui_and_neri.png
The mysterious lady that Sui encounters at a forest. Along with the monkey researcher, she is revealed to be one of the original residents of Tetsunagi Island and one of its major ancestors.
  • Dead All Along: The old lady and the sloth that Sui encounters is nothing more than a mirage, let alone the entire place being real as well. She's already dead prior to the events of the story.
  • Famous Ancestor: Along with other countless researchers originating from a lab, she's one of the first few humans to set foot on Tetsunagi Island, in a union between them and Talking Animals. After a tragic journey, she and the rest of the survivors were the first ones to birth Tetsunagi as an entire community that is seen in the present.
  • Walking Spoiler: It is very difficult to talk about her without mentioning The Reveal, being one of Tetsunagi's ancestors, as well as mentioning the fact that she's already dead for a long time.
