This page has been split because of its length. This index page will cover monsters without a specific type (under Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition rules) or monster families that span multiple types. For playable races, see the Playable Races page. See the respective sub-pages for:

    Herald

  • Draconic Humanoid: Heralds of fire and the Great Wyrm, who serve draconic deities, take the form of bipedal humanoid dragons, and are classified as dragons under Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition rules.

Herald of Blood

Challenge Rating: 12
Alignment: Neutral Evil

  • Blood Magic: As powerful sorcerers and blood mages, heralds of blood are without peer.
  • The End Is Nigh: Their stirring speeches proclaim that the end times are fast approaching, and their followers must prepare for a bloody reckoning.
  • Magic Eater: Heralds of blood feed on ley line magic and the black blood of the earth as much as on flesh and blood.

Herald of Darkness

Challenge Rating: 7
Alignment: Neutral Evil

  • Clingy Costume: The black sword and star-scattered cloak of a herald of darkness are part of its magical substance and cannot be parted from it.
  • Dark Is Evil: Heralds of darkness are foul and treacherous creatures.
  • You Cannot Grasp the True Form: Heralds of darkness can take an evil majestic form that leaves those who see it shaken and weak—and often blind. Speaking of this form is difficult, but poets and bards trying to describe it have said it resembles an apocalyptic horror built of chained souls and the slow death of children carried along in a glacial river, rushing to an inevitable doom.

Herald of Fire

Challenge Rating: 12
Alignment: Lawful Evil

  • Elemental Weapon: The herald of fire wields a fiery lance in battle.
  • Evil Tax Collector: In the Dragon Empire and sometimes Nuria Natal, Parthia, Beldestan and Khandiria, heralds of fire are tax collectors of an extremely impatient kind. Those who value gold more than life or refuse to share the burdens and costs of the empire are taken to the square and burnt alive by a fire elemental summoned for that purpose. Their homes are then plundered thoroughly before being burnt to ashes.
  • Hot-Blooded: While a herald of fire does seek justice and tribute for the dragon gods, it is known for its propensity to anger at slight provocations. Sometimes, it performs immediate and even fatal judgement on the source of its annoyance. Afterwards, it generally claims to have acted entirely within the law and dares others to gainsay it.
  • Morphic Resonance: Though the herald can assume the shape of a dragonborn, human or kobold, it always has eyes filled with leaping flames, no matter its guise.
  • Ornamental Weapon: The herald of fire often carries a magical sword of truth made of soft silver and inlaid with mithral and gold, which is unsuitable for actual combat.
  • Playing with Fire: The herald of fire can call down searing, crimson fire in a cylinder.

Herald of the Great Wyrm

Challenge Rating: 15
Alignment: Lawful Neutral

  • Master of Unlocking: The herald of the great wyrm can open any locks, stoppers, chests, wards and doors that prevent access.
  • Thinking Up Portals: Gates and shadow portals pop into existence at the herald of the Great Wyrm's bidding.

Herald of Undeath

Challenge Rating: 11
Alignment: Lawful Evil

  • Eye Spy: A herald of undeath often leaves an eyeball somewhere to keep watch on a particular location.
  • Helping Hands: The herald of undeath can detach its various limbs at any time, leaving them to act independently.
  • Monster Lord: A herald of undeath can raise entire undead armies from large cemeteries, battlefields or necropoleis. There is no limit to the number of undead that will follow a herald of undeath, and even intelligent undead are not immune to its clarion call.

    Titan
Challenge Rating: 12 (ancient), 8 (degenerate)
Alignment: Neutral Good (ancient), Chaotic Evil (degenerate)

  • Dishing Out Dirt: Degenerate titans cannot command magical words of power, but they have tapped into the earth's latent mystic power to generate strange geomancy.
  • Formerly Sapient Species: Degenerate descendants of once-noble titans haunt the ruins where their cities once flourished.
  • Mood-Swinger: Degenerate titans are prone to insanity and unexpected mood shifts.
  • Precursors: After a divine war, titans founded an empire that lasted thousands of years before plague brought about its collapse.
  • Our Titans Are Different: Ancient titans are the surviving immortal children of an early primordial god. They stand 60 feet tall and weigh over 20 tons.
