Fiery Redhead: Subverted, he's usually calm and composed.
I Am Who?: was kept ignorant of his heritage, for his own safety.
King Incognito: For most of book 1.
Master of None: Though he gets a variety of training in various disciplines, both martial and political, he never really gets top-level good at any of them.
Unwanted Harem: Marries Astarte deLuna for political reasons, but only has eyes for Kamil Olfski. The girls get along just fine, but Astarte's mother is NOT happy about it, and the final book in the series is about her trying to have Kamil assassinated.

The Atoner: In Ghost Legion, Sagan lives in a monastery as a lay brother, performing the most physically difficult and unpleasant tasks, barely eating and sleeping and almost always silent. He chose this life as an atonement for his sins.
Badass Cape: Red, which he wears with his Roman-style armor.

Childhood Friend Romance: with Maigrey. They were friends since she was six, and he fifteen.
Cool Ship: the Phoenix, his custom made flagship.
Cultured Badass: like Maigrey, he often quotes works of literature and listens to classical music.

Dark and Troubled Past: Started a revolution, betrayed his king, ordered all of his fellow Guardians killed and almost killed his love, Maigrey.
Deadpan Snarker: His humor is very dry.
Dying Moment of Awesome: Sacrificed himself to stop Flame Starfire's evil plan.
Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Throughout the first book, he's referred to as "The Warlord" by everybody except President Robes.
Face–Heel Turn: when he betrayed the king and supported the revolution. And then Heel–Face Turn back again, joining forces with Maigrey in order to take down the bad guy and install the rightful king, son of the deceased one, back on the throne.
Heartbroken Badass: After mercy killing Maigrey, the love of his life.

Psychic Dreams for Everyone: Continuously sees a dream in which he kills Maigrey. The dream proves to be prophetic.

Red Oni: to Maigrey's Blue Oni.
Sexy Priest: Tall, handsome and a priest monk of the Order of Adamant.
Star-Crossed Lovers: With Maigrey. Their problematic relationship makes half of the plot.
Tall, Dark, and Snarky: Tall, black-haired and famous for his snarky quotes.
Tom the Dark Lord: "Derek" is not a name that inspires fear.

Badass Cape: Same as Sagan's, only blue.
Blue Oni: Calm and she is this to Sagan's Red Oni. Unique in that she was also Red to Platus' Blue.
Childhood Friend Romance: with Sagan. She knew him since she was six.
Cultured Badass: Both she and Sagan are well-read and fond of classical music. She uses a quote from Yeats's poem as an activation code for the space-rotating bomb.
Daddy's Girl: Was her father's favorite child due to her tomboyishness and warrior's spirit.
Died in Your Arms Tonight: Dies in the arms of Sagan.

Lady of War: Very graceful and a skilled warrior. Silver armor only adds to her royal grace.
Mindlink Mates: Has a mind connection with Sagan.

Scars Are Forever: Her past confrontation with Derek Sagan has left her with a nasty scar on her cheek.
Star-Crossed Lovers: with Sagan. They were once lovers, but parted ways when he joined the rebellion against the royal dynasty. Turns out her and Sagan's mutual feelings are not completely gone even after 17 years...

Afterlife Antechamber: comes to Maigrey right after his death.
Blue Oni: to Maigrey's Red. While she was quite a hothead in her youth, he was always gentle and level-headed.
Bookworm: A philosopher, thinker and avid reader.
Meaningful Name: Platus = Plato
Non-Action Guy: unlike his Action Girl sister
Parental Substitute: Raised Dion since he was a baby.
Reluctant Warrior: and a lousy one at that
The Un-Favourite: His warrior father despised him for his gentle and bookish nature.
