- Break the Cutie: In the original story, the Cat was disappointed after Conrad calls him out for messing up the house, leading him to sadly pack up Thing 1 and Thing 2 and leave. Fortunately, he perks back up and remembers to clean up before exiting completely.
- Excited Kids' Show Host: Of the second season of The Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss, and The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!.
- Hammerspace: Almost anything can fit inside his hat, from his Little Cat cousins to even bridge pieces.
- The Pollyanna: Optimistic, funny, and upbeat almost 95% of the time, even in bad or difficult situations.

- Adaptation Dye-Job: The 1971 cartoon and later book and media appearances depict Conrad as a brunette with Sally as a blonde. Conrad's hair was changed to black like in the original story for Living Books, while Sally kept her blonde hair.
- Character Narrator: Conrad is the narrator of the original book and The Cat in the Hat Comes Back.
- Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Sally has blonde hair and is a nice and friendly child.
- Named by the Adaptation: Conrad was unnamed in the original story; he received his name for the 2003 movie. Both also received their surnames in said movie as well.
- Pink Girl, Blue Boy:
- In the installments for The Cat in the Hat's Learning Library, Conrad wears blue while Sally wears pink.
- Inverted in some artwork that show Conrad wearing a red sweater while Sally wears a blue jumper dress.
- Played straight in the 1971 cartoon; Conrad wears blue pants while Sally wears a pink dress and bow.
- In Living Books, Conrad wears orange while Sally wears lilac.
The Fish

- Named by the Adaptation: The 1971 special gives him the rather fancy "Carlos K. Krinklebine".
- Only Sane Man: Has the most common sense out of the others, and knew not to trust the Cat and his crazy house-wrecking activities.
Thing 1 and Thing 2

- Adaptation Dye-Job: Their appearances in The Cat in the Hat's Learning Library books depict them with blonde hair instead of blue hair, and their suits are blue instead of red.
- Identical Twin ID Tag: The sole way to tell the two apart is they have their names and respective numbers written on their chest stickers.
- Improbable Hairstyle: Both have unusually huge and messy blue hairdos which resemble duster feathers.
- The Unintelligible: They only speak through the use of gibberish and the occasional giggles and yells in The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!, albeit they can be understood fluently.
