Leadership
Rasa
Fourth Kazekage of Sunagakure, and father of Gaara, Kankuro and Temari.
- Abusive Parents: While he never goes as far as sending assassins after Gaara like in canon, the fact that he decides to test if Shukaku's sand defenses still work following Jiraiya reinforcing his seal by throwing several kunai at his seven year old son's face shows that he's not winning any prizes for father of the year any time soon.
- Action Dad: During the Fourth Ninja War, he fights alongside his children.
- Adaptational Heroism: Thanks to Jiraiya fixing Gaara's seal, he never turns on Konoha and instead remains a loyal ally. He even undergoes a Jerkass Realization and becomes a better father for his kids (though it took nearly losing all three of them in the span of about 48 hours for it to happen).
- Frontline General: During the Fourth Ninja War, he leads the Fourth Division and takes part in the battle along with his children.
- Jerkass Realization: It takes his youngest son being captured by Akatsuki and the other two almost dying for him to realize how much of a horrible father he's been.
- Married to the Job: He seems to have this issue with his position as Kazekage, since he can't stand the thought of leaving Suna in the hands of someone else. His children even remark he hardly takes any days off, and Temari calls him out on never spending time with her and her brothers.
- So Proud of You: When his children manage to defeat Ginkaku and Kinkaku after he failed, he voices how proud he is for surpassing him in strength.
- Spared by the Adaptation: Due to never getting involved with Orochimaru, he remains the Kazekage by the time the Fourth Ninja War rolls around.
Sunagakure Ninja
Gaara
Rasa's second son and youngest child, and jinchuriki of the Shukaku.
- Abled in the Adaptation: Thanks to Jiraiya fixing his seal, he doesn't suffer from insomnia and is able to sleep without fear of Shukaku breaking free.
- Adaptational Nice Guy: Thanks to him becoming friends with Naruto and Jiraiya fixing his seal, he's much calmer and controlled, never turning into an Ax-Crazy murderer.
- Childhood Friends: Befriends Naruto as a child when Jiraiya brings the latter along on a diplomatic trip to Suna.
- Sand Blaster: His sand is obviously his primary form of combat.
- Super Mode: Learns Sage Mode from Naruto.
- Spanner in the Works: Him making it into the finals of the Chunin Exams (along with Temari and Karui) meant that Orochimaru had to push back his invasion plans a few weeks or risk drawing the ire of three of the five Great Ninja Villages at once.
- Spared by the Adaptation: The process of removing his Tailed Beast is interrupted at the last second, leaving him with enough chakra for Hinata and Naruto to stabilize him. This also means that Chiyo never has to perform her Sacrificial Revival Spell to bring him back.
- Youngest Child Wins: Much like canon, he's the only one of Rasa's children to be able to become a Jinchuriki. But unlike canon, he's mentally stable thanks to Jiraiya's sealing skills.
Kankuro
Rasa's first son and middle child, and a puppeteer ninja.
- Childhood Friends: Befriends Naruto as a child when Jiraiya brings the latter along on a diplomatic trip to Suna.
- Middle Child Syndrome: He confesses to Naruto to have had this to an extent, which is the reason he decided to become a puppeteer ninja to stand out on his own.
- Mighty Glacier: His Tamotsu puppet, repurposed from an Uzumaki chakra golem. While it's not the fastest puppet in his arsenal, it's armed to the teeth with flamethrowers, kunai launchers, and both arm-mounted and chakra-powered shields. After Kankuro learns Sage Mode, Tamotsu can even make use of a shield that draws attacks in, absorbs their energy, and sends it right back.
- Super Mode: Learns Sage Mode from Naruto.
Temari
Rasa's only daughter and eldest child.
- Calling the Old Man Out: Downplayed. While she doesn't yell or get violent about it, she's clearly annoyed when Rasa refuses to take a few days off to train and learn Sage Mode with her, Kankuro and Gaara, since he's always too busy with his work to raise them.
- Childhood Friends: Befriends Naruto as a child when Jiraiya brings the latter along on a diplomatic trip to Suna.
- Insult of Endearment: She refers to her boyfriend Shikamaru as "Pineapple Head", though there's a great deal more affection when she uses it compared to everyone else.
- Long-Distance Relationship: She starts dating Shikamaru at some point during the Time Skip. Most of the times that the meet up are when she comes to Konoha (because he finds traveling across the desert to be too much of a pain), resulting in most of the boys in Suna being convinced that she just made him up to keep them off her back.
- Spanner in the Works: Her making it into the finals of the Chunin Exams (along with Gaara and Karui) meant that Orochimaru had to push back his invasion plans a few weeks or risk drawing the ire of three of the five Great Ninja Villages at once.
- Spirited Competitor: She spent three years trying to get Shikamaru to agree to a proper rematch after he surrendered to her during the Chunin Exam preliminaries. He finally relented after the Time Skip when she was in in Konoha to help finalize the treaty for the Konoha-Suna-Kiri alliance.
- Super Mode: Learns Sage Mode from Naruto.
Matsuri
One of Maki's students. She has a crush on Gaara.
- Best Friends-in-Law: It's mentioned in the epilogue that Kankuro is married to her friend Sari, and that she had played matchmaker for them.
- Blow You Away: She can use Wind Release jutsu.
- Combination Attack: She can combine her Wind Release with Yukata's Fire Release for devastating combos.
- Insecure Love Interest: Being a girl from an ordinary background who is crushing on the son of the village leader, she feels that he's out of her league.
- The Matchmaker: She hooked up Kankuro with her friend Sari by the time of the epilogue.
- Promoted to Love Interest: She ends up married to Gaara in the epilogue with three children (Gaara's canon adopted son Shinki and twin daughters).
- Related in the Adaptation: Her marriage to Gaara means that she's Shinki's (adoptive) mother.
Yukata
One of Maki's students, and Matsuri's best friend.
- Combination Attack: She can combine her Fire Release with Matsuri's Wind Release for devastating combos.
- Playing with Fire: She can use Fire Release jutsu.
Mikoshi
One of Maki's students.
- Healing Hands: Knows a little of medical ninjutsu.
- The One Guy: The only male member of Team Maki.
Maki
A Sunagakure Jonin, and student of the legendary Pakura of the Scorch Release.
- Adaptational Early Appearance: Appears in Part 1 when Naruto and Jiraiya pay a visit to Suna.
- Ascended Extra: Her role is much bigger than in canon. She plays a key role in Gaara's rescue and the defeat of an Akatsuki member.
- Cloth Fu: Her main weapon is a scroll of cloth that she can use to attack, defend, wear as armor, or seal opponents.
Yashamaru
Rasa's brother in-law, uncle of Gaara, Kankuro and Temari.
- Dude Looks Like a Lady
- Spared by the Adaptation: With Gaara being far more stable, Yashamaru is never ordered to blow himself up to kill him.
Chiyo
One of Suna's elders, and Sasori's grandmother.
- Demoted to Extra: She never takes an active role in Gaara's rescue, and remains as a background advisor for Rasa.
- Sins of Our Fathers: Inverted. She blames herself for her grandson's actions as a member of Akatsuki, though everyone tells her that she's not at fault.
- Spared by the Adaptation: Since she's not involved in Gaara's rescue, and Gaara doesn't actually die, she doesn't need to sacrifice her life to revive him.
Pakura
One of Suna's strongest ninjas, being a wielder of the rare Scorch Release. She was ambushed and killed by Kiri ninjas during the Third Ninja War.
Yoritomo
The Third Kazekage. At some point in the past, he was killed by Sasori and his corpse was used as a Human Puppet.
- Named by the Adaptation: He's given a name due to not having one in canon.
Bunpuku
An elderly monk, who was Shukaku's first jinchuriki.
- Senior Sleep-Cycle: Falls asleep during the conversation that Naruto has with the spirits of the deceased Jinchuriki, so he doesn't take part in it.
