Ron Kamonohashi

Voiced by: Yohei Azakami

"He's weirdly obsessed with solving cases, he's incredibly selfish, he trows investigations into chaos and tries to kill the culprit, and it makes me not want to work with him again, but... for some reason, part of me can't wait for the next case, the part of me that is excited for the thrill of Ron's deductions and mystery-solving!"
—Isshiki

The titular character, a once up-and-coming detective with a brilliant future ahead that went downhill due to a fatal flaw in his work. He now manages a building to make a living, isolating himself from the world, but is brought back into the investigations by Isshiki.

  • Animal Motif: Subtle, but he has a platypus motif. His last name, "Kamonohashi", is pronounced the same way as the Japanese word for platypus note . He also is shown playing with a platypus doll sometimes.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He's quickly established with many bizarre habits like regularly talking to the corpses of his victims as part of his detective analysis, somehow managing to drink pure brown sugar syrup in any situation possible, and his ability to make murderers commit suicide. Still doesn't prevent him from being one of the most brilliant detectives that Blue Academy has ever seen. It's also notable that his five-year hiatus in which some of those odd habits developed haven't done anything to diminish that talent as well.
  • Broken Ace: Ron was regarded as the best student of the already prestigious Blue Academy, with a 100% case resolution. However, due to his "fatal flaw" that compels him to kill the culprits after solving the case, he also has a 0% arrest rate, and he has since been banned from doing investigative work by Blue.
  • Character Tics: He pushes his hair to the side to show his eyes when he's deduced something.
  • Compelling Voice: Whenever Kamo orders the culprits to kill themselves, they would do so without fail, as though are hypnotized.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: When Isshiki meets him, his eyes have become this due to his boring life and not being able to keep working as a detective. The light returns to his eyes when he is investigating something.
  • Exotic Detective: Ron is without a doubt a Great Detective, but he's extremely eccentric: he shuts himself in a furniture-free room with no TV and internet access, and spends his free time knitting a 100m long scarf and creating a Relationship Chart for his arm hairs. When Toto manages to convince him to work on the case, he immediately starts "conversing" with the victim, and then setting up Toto as a bait for the killer without telling him of his intentions. Then there is his "Fatal Flaw".
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: When he's first shown in the first chapter at Blue Academy, his hair is very carefully groomed and combed back, but when Isshiki meets Kamo five years later, his hair has become very messy and long, indicating his lack of care for both personal appearance and detective work.
  • Famous Ancestor: He's the sixth generation of Sherlock Holmes's family and the ninth generation of James Moriarty's family.
  • Frame-Up: During the Observatory Viewing Party murder, Ron is found alone with the victim's corpse and a gun near him, making him the likely suspect of the murder even if he doesn't remember anything. Convinced he was framed, Isshiki starts investigating on his own. They also talk he might have been framed by the murder of five criminals during his Blue years.
  • Genius Sweet Tooth: Although he's particularly fond of brown sugar syrup, Ron doesn't mind gorging on other types of sweets to help boost his brain energy.
  • Heroic BSoD: In chapter 8, he has a nervous breakdown over the idea that he almost got Isshiki killed pressuring the murderer to die had Mofu not swapped the markers by accident and considers withdrawing from detective business altogether again because of the fear this could happen again, with the only thing distracting him from his funk being the invitation to a star viewing at the chapter's end.
  • Lack of Empathy: In his rock bottom state, he can't bring himself to care for the people being killed by a rampaging serial killer.
  • The Nicknamer: He calls Isshiki "Toto" since he considers his first name too long.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Isshiki notes that Kamo's lack of snarky comeback means that he's seriously distracted by something in chapter 8, not to mention his visible signs of distress like profusely sweating and shaking rather than his usual composure. He is severely distraught that, had not been for a pure stroke of luck, his latest impulse to tell a murderer to kill himself would have ended with Isshiki dead.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Played with, as Isshiki thinks that Kamo's detective guises are absolutely terrible for how bad at playing the part Kamo is and will immediately be seen through by anyone. But pretty much everyone believes that he really is just whatever profession he's masquerading as, albeit incredibly eccentric. Kawasemi does hint that he doesn't buy it but decides not to pry any further.
  • Power Incontinence: After solving a case, Kamo is compelled to order the culprits to kill themselves, which they always do. He has no memory of doing such things, and can't stop himself from killing those murderers, which is why his detective license is revoked. However, chapter 6 reveals that this only apparently applies to murderers as both he and Isshiki are bewildered that Kamo didn't automatically enter his hypnotic mode when Yamane confesses.
  • Psychic-Assisted Suicide: Ron has killed all the culprits he's apprehended by ordering them to kill themselves. They never fail to do so, as though hypnotized.
  • Sherlock Scan: As most Great Detective characters, he can quickly infer a lot of information from small clues in a person. When he first meets Isshiki, he can notice he made an offering to the local temple by hearing the coins in his pocket and the pine tree pollen in his shoulder.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He heavily resembles his father Eliot aside from lacking his distinctive birthmark and hair color, something that people who met him comment upon.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Ron is a Sweet Tooth, but he's especially fond of brown sugar syrup, which he's able to consume by the gallon. He adds brown sugar syrup as a condiment to almost all his foods (including omelette rice), and would often slurp on syrup at random times outside mealtimes.
  • Unkempt Beauty: Despite spending his days doing basically nothing productive and barely keeping his appearance, Kamonohashi still has quite the handsome face and a fit body due to working out when he has nothing better to do, and his shaggy hair and unkempt clothes add a certain charm to his looks.

    Totomaru Isshiki

Officer Totomaru Isshiki

Voiced by: Jun'ya Enoki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rkdd_anime_isshiki.png

A meek, down on his luck, and unskilled but well-meaning officer. Isshiki is failing to get anything done in his field and ends up teaming up with Kamonohashi to solve complicated cases.

  • Affectionate Nickname: While Kamonohashi calls him Toto simply because he finds his full name too long, Spitz calls him "Tototo" as a sign of friendship, considering him his new best friend.
  • Expy: Isshiki has more than a passing resemblance to Tsunayoshi Sawada, the protagonist of Amano Akira's most popular series, including his personality, his looks, and even the way he is mistreated by everyone around him. It's also noticeable that this kind of meek Nice Guy as a central character is somewhat of Akira's Creator Thumbprint.
  • Fake Ultimate Hero: Ron outright states his goal is to turn Isshiki into this. He wants to solve mysteries more than getting any popularity from it, and neither can he, since people finding out he is acting as a detective without a license could get him killed, so he plans to keep solving mysteries while letting Isshiki get enough credit to become a famous detective. The Poisoned Latte Case shows that this is starting to happen when a reporter asks to interview him, saying that he has become known among journalists for solving bizarre cases.
  • Hidden Depths: He's revealed to have learned English from Spitz to where he's conversational in it by the time he comes to England with Ron.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: He is turning into this for Ron, helping him through the multitude of anxieties the man hides beneath his eccentricities, including the guilt complex for his actions and his own self-deprecation. Ron mentions that when the "Bloody Field Trip" happened, he was crying and screaming when he was arrested, but isn't when he gets suspected of murdering Onodera because Isshiki is there with him.
  • Kindhearted Simpleton: Downplayed, while not stupid, Isshiki is also not very smart, but he is a very sweet man whose kindness makes it possible to make Kamonohashi work again.
Spitz: I knew you were a great guy! You're not very clever, but you have a deep heart!
  • Nice Guy: Isshiki is a sweet guy at heart and really wants to help others as a policeman. This makes him the perfect balance to Kamonohashi, who can be very cold and uncaring.
  • No-Respect Guy: Isshiki is disrespected and looked down upon by basically everyone in his workplace, with his senpai, Amamiya, publicly humiliating him when he asks to help with a case.

Police

    Amamiya

Amamiya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rkdd_amamiya.png

Voiced by: Yōko Hikasa

Isshiki's boss, responsible for separating the cases among detectives. She takes particularly hard to him due to his inability to solve anything, but she is taken in by Kamonohashi's charm.

  • Crush Blush: She's quite taken in by Ron (whom she calls Kamo-sama), and blushes whenever he's around.
  • Iron Lady: A tough as nails leader of her sector with ambitions to become police superintendent general, this is notably displayed when she's the only police officer who aggressively refuses to put up with Kawasemi's perfectionist tendencies. The only time she lets her mask slip is regarding Kamonohashi whom she's become smitten with. She also does try to at least act nice to Isshiki, unlike Kawasemi who simply ignores him after taking one look at him.
  • Mean Boss: While she can, on occasion, be nice to Isshiki, she is mostly quite nasty to him, doing things like publicly humiliating him in the office by laughing at the idea of letting him in on her case and threatening to fire him if Kamo's investigations aren't up to her standards. Even when she has to thank and rely on him, she can't even bring herself to physically thank him properly and says she is only relying on him because she has absolutely no other option.

    Omito Kawasemi

Omito Kawasemi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rkdd_kawasemi.png

Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama

A detective from the Aichi Prefecture known as "Eagle Eye", with the highest number of solved murders in the country and considered to become the next police superintendent general.

  • The Perfectionist: He is dedicated to the very fine details of things. As soon as he enters the precinct, he calls out everyone's minimal failures, including using overly polite language, using the picture of the wrong kind of squirrel when investigating the death of one, wrong use of kanji, crooked ties, everything. It's deconstructed in chapter 6 by showing the mental toll it takes on his assistant to have to be perfect to the most minute detail and have even excusable mistakes being scrutinized to an unnecessary degree.
  • Pet the Dog: Kawasemi admits that Yamane has become truly precious to him and look at his positives instead of overwhelmingly focus on negatives. This affection is considerable as Kawasemi considers quitting the police force after Yamane confesses to tampering with the case if that allows him to still work with Yamane on cases.

Blue Academy

    Aimee Emmerich

Principal Aimee Emmerich

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rkdd_principal.png

Voiced by: Kikuko Inoue

The current principal of Blue Academy.

  • Alliterative Name: Eme Emmerich, in the Manga Plus translation at least. According to the cover of Chapter 58, her first name is meant to be "Aimee."
  • Black Boss Lady: A black woman, and the principal of Blue Academy.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She believes Ron wasn't responsible for the Bloody Field Trip incident and has Spitz deliver Ron a coded message to both inform and warn him about the M. Family's involvement in the case.

    Spitz Feier

Spitz Feier

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rkdd_spitz_0.png

Voiced by: Taku Yashiro

The tracking specialist of Blue Academy. He is tasked with finding and confirming whether Ron is practicing detective work unlawfully, but he secretly is trying to befriend him to get his help on his family's disappearance.

  • Expy: Spitz is quite obviously based on Hayato Gokudera from Akira's previous work. Not only do they look quite similar, but they also play almost the same role in the story: being set-up as a Starter Villain, but end up being a devoted best friend to the protagonist. Even his casual outfits have the same delinquent-like look that Gokudara's had.
  • Inspector Javert: He is introduced in Chapter 3 as a Blue Instructor, sent to go after Ron to verify the rumors that he is really breaking Blue's law by performing investigations despite his ban. Considering that this offense is punishable by death, this is definitely not a good sign for the heroes. However, this is eventually subverted. Spitz is just trying to ask Ron for his help to solve the mysterious disappearance of his family.
  • Meaningful Name: Spitz is a type of dog mostly used for hunting, which is fitting for Blue's tracking specialist.

    John Grizzly

John Grizzly

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rkdd_grizzly.png

Voiced by: Kazuhiro Yamaji

The "closed circle" instructor of Blue Academy. A tough-looking man whom Ron considers to be his superior, but who has a bone to pick with him.

  • Sacrificial Lion: He is killed in the Observatory case after cornering the person whom he believes to be the killer, despite being a detective on par with Ron himself. Said death and the case as a whole is what motivates Ron to seek out the truth behind the "Bloody Field Trip" incident.

The M. Family

    General
The most powerful crime family in the world, whose cases in which they are involved are never solved. The family has taken an interest in fighting Ron Kamonohashi and is related to him in a distant way.
  • Famous Ancestor: They're the descendants of James Moriarty.
  • Resignations Not Accepted: When a serial killer in their employ retires from the business to raise a child, Mylo orders him and his family eliminated.

    Mylo Moriarty

Mylo Moriarty

Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/m_family_leader.png

The leader of the M. Family and the first Moriarty child. A cruel man that is interested in bringing Ron Kamonohashi to his side by inflicting immense despair on him.

  • Faux Affably Evil: He is completely calm and polite whenever he is seen, but he is shown to be truly evil and cruel, even not thinking much about ordering his own brother's assassination when he failed a task.
  • The Perfectionist: A standard of the Moriarty family, which he carries to an outrageous degree, executing people who fail to perfectly complete a task they were given by him. Eliot was killed because of this.
  • My Nayme Is: According to the Chapter 58 cover, his name is actually spelled "Mylo" instead of the more normal "Milo" used in the Manga Plus translation.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Orders an underling to kill the entire family of a target, including his children, to make sure that his children wouldn't come back seeking vengeance.

    Winter Moriarty

Winter Moriarty

Voiced by: Yumiri Hanamori

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rkdd_winter.png

The fourth child of the Moriarty family. She resents her big brother for sparing Ron but disposing of another of their siblings, Alice.

  • Arc Villain: The central antagonist of the Shibuya Revelation Serial Murders, though she was sent to do it by her older brother in order to test Ron's skills.
  • Master of Disguise: She is good at disguising herself using realistic masks that totally hide her appearance. She is introduced by disguising herself as a person responsible for the body retrieval in the Case of the Island Observatory Murders. Shee is also quickly capable of disguising himself as the hacker Ron and Toto were supposed to be protecting.

    Eliot Moriarty

Eliot Moriarty

Ron's deceased father.

  • Distinguishing Mark: He had a crescent moon-shaped birthmark under his left eye.
  • Shared Family Quirks: Like Ron, Eliot also douses his food in a sugary substance, though he uses maple syrup instead.
  • Sweet Tooth: Recounts from people who met him recall him slathering maple syrup all over his food.

Civilians

    Dr. Mofu Usaki

Mofu Usaki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rkdd_mofu.png

Voiced by: Nao Tōyama

A clumsy, but brilliant, neurosurgeon on a crusade against ESP.

  • Cute Clumsy Girl: Exaggerated. She is capable of bringing injuries upon herself for the milder things, like slashing her own face with a knife when trying to cut an apple.
  • Ditzy Genius: She's very clumsy and behaves like an airhead, but is a very skilled neurosurgeon, nevertheless.
  • Freudian Excuse: She once had a patient that had refused medical treatment, believing they could be cured by ESP, and that patient died. This led her into being a loud voice against anti-scientific methods.

    Chicory Monki

Chicory Monki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rkdd_chikori.png

Voiced by: Konomi Kohara

A crime journalist who has developed a deep respect for Isshiki believing he is the detective that solved several bizarre cases.

    Sabotora Nora

Sabotora Nora

A proclaimed local detective of Juichimi District, his detecting capabilities are next to zero but he has a certain trick up his sleeve that can allow him to grasp the truth.

  • Awesome, but Impractical: Having the power to read pretty much any lie is all well and good, but he needs an actual physical crow in order to trigger it as far as it seems and he's only able to make certain actual deductions by mere happenstance when they appear.
  • Character Tics: He has a physical tic of rubbing his nose with his finger when making declarations.
  • Clueless Detective: A big issue with his detections is his tendency to make wild leaps of logic and be unable to piece the info he has right in front of him together.
  • Living Lie Detector: Only around the presence of crows, as they heighten his adrenaline to the point where he can instantaneously do a Sherlock Scan on people's mannerisms, speech, and expressions to figure out if they're lying.
  • Smarter Than You Look: He's one of the few characters who figures out Ron's ploy to use Toto as his proxy for investigating cases, that Toto is not the one making deductions, and Ron is a detective, not his guise of the week, all without knowing Ron's backstory or outside information to help make this analysis. However, since his ability to perceive lies mainly just discerns between lies and truth, he isn't able to deduce the motive. This is also the implication why he has a C-rank detective license despite how bad he is at grasping the truth 80% of the time when not around crows.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: He loathes crows ever since he got attacked by them as a kid and is wary of them attacking him again. This is the main basis behind his heightened powers of insight as merely hearing or seeing crows causes him to rapidly scan and assess everything around him.
