Umfry Spikkle

Corksnout Spikkle

  • Genius Bruiser: About as big as Sollertree, but he's actually fairly smart.
  • Inertial Impalement: Baliss headbutts him with a mouth full of crow, which is why some of his spikes got rammed inwards. Baliss definitely got the worse end of the deal, as the spikes in his own head soon fester, driving him mad with pain.
  • Spanner in the Works: The moment Baliss attacks him, everything goes south for Korvus Skurr.

Abbot Glisam

Brother Torilis

  • Jerkass: Most Infirmary Keepers are merely stern, if intimidating. Torilis, however, is all about rules, dignity, doing what you're told, he honestly comes across as a bit Lawful Stupid at times.
  • The Medic: Infirmary Keeper, it's his job.
  • Perpetual Frowner: He only smiles when he's operating. The problem is that it's likely a Slasher Smile. Bosie later says that Torilis would likely laugh for a season if he got his paws on Baliss, who is currently in the middle of his Corksnout-induced breakdown.

Lord Bosie McScutta

Zaran the Black

Log a Log Tugga Bruster

  • Abusive Parents: It's obvious he doesn't give a damn about his son Dubble.

The Gonfelins

  • Improbable Weapon User: When squabbling amongst themselves, they beat each other over the head with sandbags.

Korvus Skurr

  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He held his brothers, from the same clutch of eggs as him, in higher regard than other birds.

Sicariss

  • Cool Crown: Serves as a living one to Korvus.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Doesn't care much for toads, seeing them as expendable fodder, but when Korvus threatens the other snakes...
  • Head Pet: Circles around Korvus's head as a crown.
  • Hypnotic Eyes: Can hypnotize other creatures by looking them in the eyes.
  • Karmic Death: Korvus feds her to The Welzz, the very creature she had helped feed so many others to and pretended to be the "oracle" of.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Not towards her, but Korvus' offer of all the reptiles in his cave as payment for Baliss is what drives her against him.
  • Phony Psychic: Claims to hear the Welzz's words (as it opens and closes its mouth constantly). Korvus learning the truth is the last straw for him keeping her around.

The Welzz

  • The Catfish: A giant catfish believed to be an oracle by Korvus.
  • Fed to the Beast: Is summoned by being offered live sacrifices. Korvus tries to trick Baliss into being eaten by it by letting him stick his head in the pool to stop his pain. Baliss responds by fighting and dragging it out of the pool to kill it.
  • Oh, Crap!: Its eyes bulge out in apparent fear when Baliss successfully drags it out of the water and sinks his venomous fangs into its body to finish it off.
  • Phony Psychic: Sicariss pretends to interpret its words that no one else can hear. Seeing as it's a fish, she just makes up what she wants as the fish constantly opens and closes its mouth.

Baliss the Slayer

  • Ax-Crazy: Post-Corksnout.
  • Disability Superpower: The narration mentions his being blind only sharpened his other senses, like sensing vibrations and heat.
  • The Dreaded: An entire army of Redwallers, Gonfellins and Guosim don't even try to fight him despite his being blind, injured and unaware of their presence. He's that scary.
  • Famous Ancestor: Descended from Asmodeus. Yes, that Asmodeus.
  • Handicapped Badass: He's blind, yet just as dangerous as his ancestor.
  • Rasputinian Death: He starts the story blind, then gets a head full of spikes that break off and fester (which he can't do anything about). Then he gets scalded by boiling water, gets in a fight with a fish bigger than he is, and it still takes a cavern collapsing in on him to finish him off.
  • Villainous Breakdown: After his ill-fated attack on Corksnout Spikkle. He gets tons of the hedgehog's spikes stuck in his head. As a snake, and a blind one no less, he has no way to get rid of them and they fester. The constant pain drives him absolutely insane.
  • Villainous Valor: Fights a huge catfish, managing to not only resist being pulled into the water but drag it out of the pool to kill it.

Blodd Apis

  • Ax-Crazy: An old hedgehog who sics bees on anyone she deems a trespasser.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: Foremole breaks her tube of ant juice, which causes her bees to see her as an enemy and sting her to death.
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: Every hedgehog in the series has been good (bar one), and now her.
  • Poisoned Chalice Switcheroo: Averted: She drinks first to prove the drink isn't poisoned, but none of the Redwallers are used to drinking anything as strong as mead, knocking them out quickly.
