Return to the Main Page here.

The main protagonists of the series. In other words: Ash, Silver and the various travelling companions they aquire during his journey.

Ash Ketchum

The series' hero. A young boy living alone with his mother, he is the first to meet a wounded Silver upon a stormy night. Over time, he comes to see the man as a surrogate father and when his journey starts, the two travel together as student and teacher. It later appears he is an Aura User and the Chosen with a Golden Heart. Also, his familly isn't exactly what it seems ...

  • 10-Minute Retirement: After Silver tells him about the Dead Star incident and Adrian's death, Ash decides to completely avoid fighting. It takes an old battle-hardened Scyther and Silver talking him down for him to snap. "No More Holding Back" Speech ensues, as well as a can of whoop-ass on a pair of Rocket Rebels.
  • Action Hero: He is just as capable of holding his own in a fight as his Pokémon are.
  • Badass and Child Duo: With Silver. Also counts as a technical Badass Family.
  • Badass Normal: Before his Aura Powers awoke.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Thanks to learning tai chi chuan and capoeira with Silver. Then he receives Aura ...
  • Batman Gambit: How he had Axew defeat Drake's Ditto. Since Ditto turns into the Pokémon it's facing, Ash sent a Pokémon whose weakness was its own type, resulting in Ditto's Transform backfiring to its face. Drake comments on it.
  • Berserk Button: Don't cause unnecessary suffering. Ash is an empath and actually witnessing it causes him pain, to which he tends to react violently ... Threatening his loved ones is also ill-advised.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Usually a nice and cheerful kid who's friendly with everyone. Now re-read the Badass tropes ...
  • Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: Ash's attempt to catch Mewtwo with the Master Ball ended with him and Clefable on their butt.
  • The Chosen One: Ash is revealed to be the Chosen with a Golden Heart, a person whose heart is so pure it is made of pure gold and can bond his heart to any living creature and feel other people's feelings. He has an unknown counterpart in the Chosen with a Silver Soul, a person whose soul is like a silver mirror and has the ability to mentally control any creature and never lose his calm. Said person is unknown at the time of the story, though the author has left some clues ...
  • Determinator
  • Did Not See That Coming: Drake was taken by surprise by Ash's plan to defeat his invincible mega-Dragonite.
  • Disappeared Dad: Ash's father, Bruno, left him and Delia to continue his journey as a Trainer before the boy was born. At least, that's the official reason ...
  • 11th-Hour Superpower: Before they awoke, Ash's Aura Powers had the habit of kicking in in stressful situations, giving him far greater reflexes than a normal person would. It allowed the boy to hold back a bunch of angry Mankey with Aura Vision and martial arts only.
  • Emotion Control: the true nature of his powers as the Chosen with a Golden Heart. By binding himself to others through his empathic abilities or Aura, he can transfer his own feelings into them, thus manipulating their emotions. It's even more potent with the Heart Flute.
  • The Empath: Ash is a Healer and an Aura Guardian. As such, he has the natural ability to reach out for any living's heart and touch it. Silver describes it as a "Healer that heals the hearts", in opposition to a "Healer that heals the wounds".
  • Empowered Badass Normal: After his Aura Powers awoke.
  • Epic Fail: Literally. Ash may have failed to catch Mewtwo with the Master Ball, but it was still pretty gutsy of him to use Clefable as a decoy to launch himself the ball point-blank. Failed? Sure. Kudos for trying? You bet!
  • Mr. Fanservice: Grew into this during the Orange Island saga. In addition to getting a tan and becoming more athletic, Silver sometimes had him go barechested or wearing a net shirt. Ash kept wondering if he was doing it on purpose ...
  • Genius Bruiser: Not as intelligent as Brock but still quite knowledgeable in a certain number of fields thanks to training with Lorelei. By the end of Mysteries of the Sea, he is able to combine Indy Ploy, Kansas City Shuffle and Batman Gambit.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: When he is angry and using Aura. Misty notes that they's rarely a good omen.
  • Heroic Bastard: Ash is revealed to be the result of a one-night stand between Giovanni and Delia.
  • I Know Your True Name: Knows the True Name of every single of his teammates, including those caught in the Orange Islands following The Reveal that he is one of the Chosen Duo.
  • Indy Ploy / Kansas City Shuffle: Pulled it against Drake to defeat his mega-Dragonite, leading to the aforementioned Did Not See That Coming above. Drake was aware that Ash had an idea. He just didn't think Ash would do something so over-the-top as creating his own weather and use Dragonite's horn as a lightning rod.
  • Irony: is nicknamed the Legendary Slayer for having defeated an Olympus Mons. Is actually the Chosen with a Golden Heart
  • Lightning Bruiser: when fighting by himself, Ash is this.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Ash's true father is Giovanni Rocket.
  • Magic Music: Of a sort, thanks to the Heart Flute. He can use it to manipulate emotions on a stronger level than just using his empathic powers.
  • Magical Flutist: Can become this with the Heart Flute.
  • Occult Blue Eyes: Sometimes, when he is using Aura.
  • Parental Abandonment: The real reason Bruno left. He learned Ash wasn't his son but Giovanni's and decided to leave him and Delia. He has no intent of coming back and Delia knew it all along.
  • Papa Wolf: Toward Axew. When a young Trainer beats it and tries to capture it when Ash isn't looking, things almost turn messy.
  • Power Gives You Wings: gains Aura Wings at the end of "Mysteries of the Sea". When "Legends of Johto" begins, his flying skills have reached decent level. Then, during his rampage in "Entei and the Crystal Dream", his rage gives him six wings.
  • Red Baron: Ironically enough, "The Legendary Slayer". Three of his Pokémon beat the crap out of a Zapdos during the Silph Battle.
  • Scars Are Forever: has a long scar on the right side of his chest following Charizard's rampage at Grandpa Canyon.
  • Sic 'Em: when pissed enough, can do this with Olympus Mons.
  • Sword over Head: At the end of "Entei and the Crystal Dream", Ash is at this from killing Molly with an Aura Sphere. Fortunately, Nathea interferes.
  • Took a Level in Badass: The entire point of his training with the Elite Four. It worked.
  • Training from Hell: Ash's four weeks of training with the Elire Four. With Bruno: heavy physical training that ended with him and his team facing a giant Steelix. With Lorelei: hours and hours of reading books with practice the afternoon, something Ash isn't used to. With Agatha: dropped in a haunted and very hostile power plant to climb his way up the food chain and optionally defeat a giant Haunter. With Lance: a little of everything and especially amplifying Ash's empathic skills. Note that Lance also put the kid against his Gyarados, and he had troubles even with the beast holding off ...
  • Unsuspectingly Soused: It wasn't water in that glass. It was a Gargle Blaster. Ash was completely caught by surprise and ended up with a big hangover.
  • Unstoppable Rage: During the 3rd Movie, Simon is lethally wounded while shielding Ash and we see what happens when a Chosen snaps: first, the boy uses the Heart Flute to sing a Hate Plague that drive half of the Legendary Council in a blinding fury. Then he sics them on Molly and her army of Crystal Pokémon. A Curb-Stomp Battle ensues that ends with Ash holding Molly at point blank with an Aura Sphere ...
    • Tranquil Fury: aside from his rage-inducing music, Ash remains eerily quiet during the whole thing, simply playing music while the Council wipes out Molly's mons.
  • Whoopi Epiphany Speech: Ash delivers an absolutely beautiful one during the fight between cloned Pokémon and their originals that doubles with Talking the Monster to Death. And it works!!! The best part? The boy isn't speaking, just playing Lugia's song with a flute. It's his heart that's doing the talking. Chosen One, indeed ...

Silver Nor Shadow

A mysterious man who washed up in Pallet Town by a stormy night, carrying an egg in his arms. He quickly bonded with Ash and became his surrogate father and mentor, the two becoming so close they decided to travel together. Silver taught Ash everything he knew, and the man's knowledge seems endless. His past is more than simply 'shadowy'.

  • Action Dad: As Ash's surrogate father.
  • Action Hero: Can stand to Koga outside a Pokémon battle. And let's not forget the beating he gave to Mewtwo ...
  • An Ice Person: Silver is an Ice Aura Guardian. Elemental Aura is even rarer than Aura itself.
  • Badass and Child Duo: The second part of the duo he forms with Ash.
  • Badass Cape: he has a long black cape that can be pretty intimidating. People are stunned to learn he uses it as a pillow or a blanket.
  • The Berserker: Can turn into this under Rage, in which he becomes blinded by fury and starts killing everything, friend or foe. The only example so far is the incident which cost Kanto's previous Champion his life.
  • Berserk Button: Never hurt his loved ones, especially Ash.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: During Ash's run-in with a water-looking cocktail, Silver notes that he gets tipsy with two glasses of white wine. This is why he avoids alcohol.
  • Covered with Scars: spots some pretty impressive scars on his left arm and stomach.
  • Crusading Widower: After Nathea died sealing the Shamoutian rift. It didn't last.
  • Dented Iron: Silver states to be this during the Indigo Conference. Also, in Blitz's poké-team entry, it is stated the man lost his ability to control light while purifying him.
  • Divine Date: He and Nathea are husband and wife.
  • Don't Ask, Just Run: When the superpowered, millenia-old Ancient starts running for the exit, you follow.
  • Doting Parent: Let's see what Silver gives Ash ... a very nice wood-carved badge case, a magic pendant that heals or protects, a badge only five persons, Ash included, won full on their first try, and let's not forget the ticket for a Training from Hell with the Elites when Ash felt he was at his limits. Yep, Silver loves his surrogate son.
  • Dual Wielding: His main weapons are two silver swords. When listing his arsenal upon arrival, one can see he has a lot of dual weapons.
  • Friend to All Children: The man singlehandedly defeated a criminal organization to save a child and admits to being utterly unable to hurt a child, no matter how. He uses it to prove Delia he isn't a monster.
  • Genius Bruiser: taught Ash most of what he knows and serves as the kid's mentor. Is also very dangerous.
  • Just Friends: Because the two of them are this, Silver being a Crusading Widower and Delia wanting to remain faithful to Bruno even though she knows he left her and Ash for good.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Ash took a lot of things off Silver's book.
  • Meaningful Name: His full name is Silver Nor Shadow. He has silver hairs and wears dark clothes.
  • Mr. Exposition: Takes this role rather than Brock or Tracey, especially when it comes to Legendary knowledge or the Ancients.
  • Mundane Utility: See that big fancy black cape of his? It's also a blanket, a pillow and a bag. He even used it as a net once.
  • Papa Wolf: Hurting Ash around Silver is a really stupid thing to do. Mewtwo did it twice and nearly paid for it and he killed Proton after the later tried to break the boy and kill him.
  • Parental Substitute: What Silver became to Ash after Delia welcomed him in. He is also the only person Ash will ever call "Father", even if Giovanni gets called this way from times to times.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: "Mewtwo, you took my son's life. NOW, GIVE ME YOURS!". Cue Curb-Stomp Battle.
  • Primal Fear: For all his badassery, Silver suffers from a genuinely crippling weakness. He is scared of drowning. This proves to be nearly fatal twice: once during the St Anne shipwreck where Ash had to rescue him (for once) and Lugia helped them, and the second time when they reached New Naibel. The kids woke up rather fact. Silver stayed comatose three hours longer. Blitz explains it's related to a childhood trauma where he nearly drowned during a storm.
  • Really 3000 Years Old: Silver is indeed a 3000-old Ancient but tries to keep it secret.
  • Refusal of the Call: Lance offered Silver to become the Champion several times. Silver always turned the offer down.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: when Ash starts playing a rage-inducing song, Silver quickly gathers everyone and flees the manor as fast as he can.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: but quite cheerful and not evil at all.
  • Walking Armory: just read Oak's list of the weapons he was carrying at the beginning of the story.
"As I have seen, you're carrying a bow and a quiver of arrows, two blades, two daggers and those strange crossbow-looking weapons I haven't figured what to make of. And I don't talk about the two metallic tubes that generate energy blades."
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Gives one to Ash at the end of the sixth chapter of Mysteries of the Sea, finally knocking the boy out of his pacifism
  • Younger Than They Look: despite being over 3000 years old, he still looks in his thirties.

Misty Williams

Ash and Silver's first travelling partner, she is a courageous young girl and Cerulean's Gym Leader. Seeking mastery of the Water Pokémon, she follows the group during the journey across the Orange Islands.

  • Badass Normal: The only one without superpowers in the team. Though ...
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Doesn't like it when other girls swoon over Ash. Especially when one of them is called Melody and has a very obvious crush on him ...
  • Fiery Redhead: Like in the Anime. Kinda ironic for a Water Master, though ...
  • I Know Your True Name: Knows the name of at least two of her teammates.
  • Making a Splash: Thanks to the Tide Pendant, she can do that. It places her on the same level as Silver and Ash power-wise, since the jewel can destroy an entire country.
  • Ship Tease: With Ash. Word of God said it's only a tease and she isn't Ash's final sweetheart.

Brock Harrison

Ash and Silver's first traveling companion, he used to be Pewter City's Gym Leader until his father returned, and watched over his many siblings alone. He wishes to become a Pokémon Breeder and is a very kind and courageous man.

  • Overshadowed by Awesome: In the Anime, he used to provide the team with information. Unfortunately, in the series, Silver knows more than he does and thus takes his role. On the other side, the man doesn't hesitate to provide Brock with help when he needs it.
  • Put on a Bus: At the beginning of Mysteries of the Sea.

Tracey Sketchit

A Pokémon Watcher who joined the crew in hopes of seeing new and interesting Pokémon? He wasn't deceived. Not much of a fighter, he isn't as intelligent as Silver but still possesses knowledge of the region and Pokémon in general.

  • Non-Action Guy: Adverted. He is perfectly capable of holding his own in a fight if the struggle at Sunburst Island is anything to go by. He is also seen fighting several times, though he doesn't have the same level of skills as Ash, Misty and Silver.
  • Ship Tease: Heavily, with Thanata. Given how well-endowed the woman is, Tracey is understandably flustered.
  • Understatement: At the beginning of the story, Tracey decides to travel with the group because he feels this journey will be interesting. He has no idea how right he is.

Gary Oak

Professor Oak's grandson and Ash's childhood friend, he started as the kid's rival and remained so for the entirety of Kanto's journey. Then came the Indigo Conference in which Ash accidentally broke his mind. After being restored at the end of "Mysteries of the Sea", he was offered to join as a new crew member. He agreed.

  • Always Someone Better: Tried to be this for Ash. His friend being tutored by Silver made it nearly impossible, leading to the two becoming rivals more than anything else.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: Except it was his mind Ash broke when he went on a rampage. He ended comatose for a year.
  • Childhood Friends: With Ash, before their relationship was stained. It is to note that Ash was Gary's only true friend.
  • Despair Speech: Gives one to Ash during the Indigo Conference. Unstoppable Rage ensues.
  • Jerkass: definitely. Ash called him out repeatedly on it and it is the reason hey fell apart.
    • Took a Level in Kindness: After being restored, Gary is noticeably nicer toward people. This is the main reason he was allowed in the crew.
  • Psychic Powers: Gains psychic powers after Ash has the Lake Trio restore him.
  • The Rival: To Ash, even though Gary wishes he was Always Someone Better to his friend.
  • Stepford Smiler: Type A. He plays The Ace and is quite charming and boastful of his skills as a Trainer, and acts all jerkassy whenever Ash is involved. Behind the mask, he's incredibly jealous of Ash for his bond with Silver and his friendship with Misty, Brock and his Pokémon. Ash calling him out repeatedly on it makes him snap hard.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Played for tears during the Indigo Conference. Gary and Ash are always at odds, until the kid snaps and his friends looks into his heart to see what's wrong with him. As it turns out, the two were friends at first because of their past and shared loneliness, but said friendship wasn't enough for Gary who became arrogant due to the way the other kids treated him and started seeing Ash as a sidekick. Then Silver came and gave Ash the ability to stand against Gary, sparking a violent rivalry between the two.
