    Doc Will Magnus

Doc Will Magnus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/doc_robot_001.jpg
The scientist who, rather by accident, created the heroic sapient robots the Metal Men.
  • Da Chief: He's not a member of the team who should be in the field, but acts as their commander.
  • Flat-Earth Atheist: He brings up that he is an atheist during the back-up feature that appeared in the first seven issues of Keith Giffen's run on Doom Patrol and even condescendingly remarks that the existence of a higher power is a scientific impossibility, when the universe he inhabits is one that's consistently shown angels and demons to be real.
  • I Would Say If I Could Say: In the backup feature included in the first seven issues of Keith Giffen's Doom Patrol run, he repeatedly brings up that he's an atheist after using exclamations that mention God.
  • Insufferable Genius: He can be irritatingly prideful of his intelligence at times, with the backup feature for Keith Giffen's run on Doom Patrol at one point having him make the boastful claim that his intellect is superior to 99.9% of humanity.
  • Mad Scientist: Doc Magnus is a rare heroic variation. The intention was always that Doc would be less human than his robot creations (for irony). In later years, however, the "mad" part has been explored from other angles. Will has legit mental health issues, and is supposed to take medication to stop things like that happening again... problem is, without them, he lacks some of the scientific brilliance that allows him to create the Metal Men in the first place.
  • The Professor: Right down to wearing plaid and smoking a pipe.

    Platinum

Platinum

The very first Metal Man, and given her makeup the most expensive.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Tina
  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: In both the original and the New 52 incarnations, the Metal Men having anything resembling personalities is something Doc never intended and can't explain. In the New 52 they weren't even supposed to be sapient or have distinct physical appearances.
  • Broken Record: In her introduction in the New 52 version of Justice League, Tina can only introduce herself and explain what she is. By her next appearance, Doc Magnus has managed to shake this problem.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Whenever Magnus shows interest in another woman.
  • The Smurfette Principle: For decades Platinum was the only female member of the team. Tin later created Nameless, who didn't really do much other than act as his girlfriend. Right before the Cerebus Syndrome Retool, Doc Magnus created Distaff Counterparts of the team, but they were one-off characters. In recent years, the team finally gained a bona-fide second female member, Copper, though she didn't survive into the New 52.
  • Yandere: For Magnus.

    Gold

Gold

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gold_prime_earth_002.jpg
The Metal Men's traditional leader.
  • Deader than Dead: During the 2019-2020 maxi-series, the Nth Metal Man destroys Gold's responsometer in the second issue, and everyone treats this as Gold being gone for good. In the third issue, the Nth Metal Man convinces Doc Magnus to release him from captivity so he can provide something better than a responsometer, and at the end of the issue, Gold is Back from the Dead, now with genuine sapience (the personalities given by the Metal Men's responsometers were revealed to just be emulations of aspects of Doc Magnus' personality).
  • Gold-Colored Superiority: Gold is the leader, not counting Doc Magnus (Da Chief).
  • Standardized Leader: Gold was consistently portrayed as the level-headed leader type until 2009 onward, where he's a bit of a narcissist who appointed himself leader because gold is obviously the best metal.

    Iron

Iron

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/iron_001.png
The strongest of the Metal Men.
  • The Big Guy: Iron is the strongest member of the team, and has a temper that makes him dangerous.
  • Pop-Cultured Badass: In the 2009 backup feature, Iron repeatedly compares people or events to whatever he's seen on TV.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Iron is pretty belligerent and his temper can often just make things worse.

    Lead

Lead

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lead_metal_men.jpg
The largest and heaviest of the Metal Men.
  • Dumb Muscle: Lead is as thick as a pyramid and twice as tough. He isn't as strong as Iron, though.

    Mercury

Mercury

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mercury_001.jpg
  • Catchphrase: Mercury's "I'm the only metal that's liquid at room temperature!"
  • Gag Nose: His nose is very long and pointy.
  • Hot-Blooded
  • The Lancer:
  • Jerkass: Mercury has a very inflated ego and is extremely selfish.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Rude, confrontational, sometimes lazy. Mercury will still do the right thing in the end, but it might take him a while to get there.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Mercury is... well, mercurial and often belittles both Tin and Gold.
  • Tsundere: Towards Platinum. He often insults her, but on many occasions it's clear that she's very important to him.

    Tin

Tin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tin_001.jpg
  • Butt-Monkey: Tin is the weakest of the Metal Men and is almost always the first to be destroyed or disabled in a crisis.
  • Gag Nose: Tin has a very long ski-jump nose.
  • The Smart Guy: He's the planner of the Metal Men.
  • The So-Called Coward: Tin is lacking in confidence and weak-willed, but has "the bravest soul" of all the Metal Men and is constantly trying to prove himself useful.
  • Verbal Tic: Tin often stutters a lot, because of his nervousness.

    Copper

Copper

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/copper_3.png
  • Butt-Monkey: Copper is constantly forgotten by her fellow Metal Men. Might even apply to a meta level, given she was consistently ignored or forgotten by other writers while she existed.
  • Deadpan Snarker
  • The Sixth Ranger: Copper joins the team far later than any of the other Metal Men, being created years after the team was formed.
  • Two Girls to a Team: After decades of Platinum being the only female Metal Man on the team (Nameless doesn't count as she was really more Tin's girlfriend than a member of the actual team) Copper became the second female Metal Man.

    Chemo

Chemo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chemo.png

A vat of toxic waste brought to life with a stolen responsometer. He was used to destroy Gotham's neighboring city of Bludhaven.

  • Generic Doomsday Villain: Originally he was just a big mindless monster who rampaged about.
  • Hero Killer: Chemo's most high profile kills include Aquagirl (Tula) and the entire population of Bludhaven, which at the time included Mouse, Dana Winters-Drake and friends and allies of Nightwing.
  • Implacable Man: Chemo is nigh impossible to stop, and he always comes back.
  • Large Ham Title: Not used by him, but to describe him; "The Nuclear Pile That Walks Like A Man!"
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Chemo, in the '07 mini-series at least. He leads a hostile corporate takeover of Magna-Tech, becoming the Head Chairman, and gets an eloquent, sinister memo right before he and his cohorts attack mankind. This is of course a huge retcon, originally he WAS just a walking menace. His dialogue still consists solely of noises such as "Glah!!", however.
  • Walking Wasteland: Chemo is so toxic he can kill anyone who comes too near him.
