Marcus and Family

Marcus Sun - The Monkey Prince

Marcus Sun

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/monkey_prince_vol_1_1_textless_lau_variant.jpg
He's done monkeying around.
The son of Sun Wukong, who was adopted by two loving parents, Laura and Winston Shugel-Shen. After being traumatised when he saw Batman fighting his parents in their home, he has no love for superheroes. Marcus also harbours some trauma from the incident, and anything that reminds him of that night causes him to panic.

After being bullied and running away, Marcus takes the advice of helpful janitor Mr. Zhu and confronts his fear... and awakens the powers of the Monkey Prince.

  • Domino Mask: As Monkey Prince he wears a red mask that he can make appear and disappear at will.
  • Freudian Excuse: He was deeply traumatized from witnessing Batman interrogating his parents, to the point that he has many anxious quirks in the present.
  • Happily Adopted: He has nothing but good things to say about Laura and Winston, and he insists they are his parents and not Sun Wukong.
  • Healing Factor: He can survive being beheaded and his head will reattach.
  • Henshin Hero: Or rather "biàn", as he says to transform into the Monkey Prince.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Sorta. He holds superheroes in contempt for doing whatever they feel is right, and this stems from the incident from his childhood when his parents fought Batman. However... his parents are supervillains. Something he becomes aware of, yet he still keeps his disdain for superheroes.
  • Silly Simian: After he becomes more comfortable with his powers, he becomes much more willing to engage in silly monkey antics.
  • Super-Strength: He's strong enough to go toe-to-toe with Shazam.
  • Super-Toughness: Can take a hit from Shazam.
  • Trauma Button: Has multiple all stemming from that fateful night Batman visited his parents. He hates superheroes, Batman in particular, and does not like being barefoot, especially while standing in water. He's liable to quickly have a hyperventilating panic attack when dealing with either circumstance again.

    Laura Shugel-Shen

Dr. Laura Shugel-Shen

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/8440665_laurashugel_shen.jpg
Marcus' adoptive mother and Winston's wife. Laura is a henchwoman and scientist for supervillains.
  • Good Parents: We're properly introduced to her this way. When she learns he was bullied into having a panic attack, she asks if he wants to take the day off school and then chews out his bullies. Afterwards, when she thinks Marcus is smoking because of some strange mist surrounding him, she knows teenagers experiment and that Marcus' life gets upended by her and Winston's jobs — she just wants him to be safe and offers to get something from a reliable source so the family can smoke together.
  • Mad Scientist's Beautiful Daughter: She's the daughter of Gerard Shugel and she's a beautiful woman, while her father is no looker even before he transfers his consciousness to the Ultra-Humanite gorilla body.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: Literally. She hires out her services to supervillains as a freelance henchwoman and scientist.
  • Token White: Laura is Caucasian — the sole named white character who regularly appears so far.

    Winston Shugel-Shen

Dr. Marcus Shugel-Shen

Marcus' adoptive father and Laura's husband. Winston is a henchman and scientist for supervillains.
  • Asian and Nerdy: A scientist who is hired to create supervillain devices, and he's Asian.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: Alongside his wife, which gets a bit confusing at one point for Penguin since they're both "Doctor Shugel-Shen".

Supporting Characters

    Kaya Mayled

Kaya Mayled

A classmate of Marcus Sun at Gotham and his possible love interest.
  • Nice Girl: She's a pretty nice person, which contrasts her idiot jock brother.

    Riz Mayled

Riz Mayled

The brother of Kaya Mayled and a bully for Marcus Sun.
  • Butt-Monkey: After Marcus discovers his powers, he turns into this, and even Robin takes a potshot at him.
  • Dumb Jock: He's a jock but he's not very bright.
  • Third-Person Person: He always addresses himself as the Riz.

    Shellestriah

Shellestriah

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/8528335_shellestriah.jpg

The half-human daughter of the Trench King who has a rather, unique interest in Marcus Sun.

  • Apparently Human Merfolk: When not turning her mouth into a Trench maw, she looks just like a regular human.
  • Daddy's Little Villain: Shellestriah is introduced as the daughter of the Trench King, wanting to help her father destroy Atlantis.
  • Easily Forgiven: Zigzagged. Despite trying to eat Marcus, Pigsy is surprisingly quick to let her become his new apprentice. Marcus on the other hand is far slower to accept her as a companion.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: She's the daughter of the Trench King and an anonymous human woman.
  • Heel–Face Turn: By the last issue of the series, she has decided she no longer wants to eat Marcus and even becomes Shifu Pigsy's apprentice.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: She's introduced trying to eat Marcus due to his powers. Even after reforming she still jokingly says he smells delicious.
  • Nightmare Face: When using her Trench abilities, her mouth turns into a maw with More Teeth than the Osmond Family. She notably doesn't use it after her Heel–Face Turn.
  • Perky Goth: The style she goes for, with her black clothes, purple hair and nose ring. Although perky in her case is not harmless.
  • Tank-Top Tomboy: She wears a black tank-top that doesn't cover her midriff and she's certainly not conventionally feminine.
  • The Ugly Guy's Hot Daughter: Her father is a monstrous humanoid fish, while she looks normal and quite pretty.

Gods of China

Sun Wukong - The Monkey King

Sun Wukong

The legendary mythological figure, and Marcus' father. He's part of the Gods of China.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Sun Wukong is goofy and energetic, as expected. He can also beat Darkseid and almost single-handedly repel an invasion from Apokolips.
  • Disappeared Dad: He's only referred to in the modern day, and we only see him once in flashback.
  • Self-Duplication: He can make clones of himself from his hair.
  • Super-Strength: He can fight off Parademons and Female Furies, so... yes. He can pack a punch.

    Shifu Pigsy

"Mr. Zhu" | Zhu Bajie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/8204713_pigsy.jpg
Posing as a janitor at Marcus' school, it's his advice that causes Marcus' powers to awaken. He then mentors the boy, and is all too eager to tell Marcus about what he and Sun Wukong got up to in the past.
  • Blow You Away: He has wind powers, with the power even lingering at times and smelling.
  • Dirty Old Man: Before he knows Laura is Marcus' mother, he tells this kid — who is a teenager, remember — about the "wide-hipped beauty" coming their way. Even after he finds out she's his mother, he asks Marcus if she's single!
  • Gasshole: He burps up the clouds that Marcus rides.
  • Pig Man: He's one of the most famous Pig Men in mythology.
  • Trickster Mentor: He gives Marcus advice that is supposedly about helping with his panic attacks. Instead, it awakens his powers.

    King Fire Bull

King Fire Bull | Red Boy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/8782181_batmanvsrobin2022_004_034.jpg
  • Big Bad Ensemble: He and Nezha serve as the main villains of Lazarus Planet.
  • Start of Darkness: King Fire Bull was originally Red Boy, an orphaned god who came to Nezha after Darkseid murdered his parents. He trained under Nezha until he unwittingly discovered a Mother Box, sending him to Apokalips. Red Boy tried to battle Darkseid and was joined by Nezha before Darkseid revealed Nezha's role in his parents' deaths and he tried to kill him, only for Nezha to turn against him and strike him down. As a god, Red Boy can't be killed so easily, so he came back and absorbed his parents' magical powers, becoming King Fire Bull.

    Devil Nezha

Nezha

A resurrected 16th century Chinese Warlord, made immortal via an elixir.
  • Deity of Human Origin: He was once a human who became immortal.
  • Demonic Possession: He can possess the bodies of other beings. He first pretends to be Alfred before possessing and downright fusing with Batman.
  • Horns of Villainy: He's got some impressive horns and is quite evil.
  • Rogues' Gallery Transplant: While introduced as a foe of Batman and Superman, his association with the Gods of China makes him an enemy of Monkey Prince as well.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: He was sealed by Batman and Superman at the end of Nezha's arc. in World's Finest.
