    Widmore

Charles Widmore

Played By: Alan Dale, Tom Connolly (teenaged) & David S. Lee (middle aged)

"There is a war coming, John."

A wealthy industrialist and the father of Penelope Widmore and Daniel Faraday. He had a long-running rivalry with his successor as leader Benjamin Linus over control of the Island, though rules limited their ability to attack one another.

  • Arch-Enemy: Ben and Desmond's. His conflict with Desmond eventually resolved itself, with Widmore acknowledging that Desmond made his daughter happy and was a good man (although neither Desmond nor Penny knew this or forgave him). His rivalry with Ben was much more long-lasting and on equal footing.
  • Arc Villain: Pretty much only the main antagonist of Season 4. Season 5 he’s around much less and by Season 6 he’s actively working with the heroes in an Enemy Mine situation.
  • The Atoner: In Season 6, when he returns to the island under Jacob's behest. It seems that the death of Daniel and his daughter's estrangement has made him realize how much his quest for power has cost him. Widmore is hardly a good guy, but he's at least trying to defeat the Man in Black.
  • Bad Boss: He has little hesitation in sending his underlings off to die. Averted with his attempt at redemption in Season 6, when he's saddened by the deaths of those under his charge.
  • Bald of Evil: In his older age.
  • Being Evil Sucks: As he admits to Desmond in Season 6, Widmore's pursuit of the Island has cost him dearly; he had to knowingly send his own son to his death, his daughter hates him, and he never gets to meet his grandson. By the time he says all this to Desmond, Widmore has clearly reconsidered his priorities.
  • The Chessmaster: He's not as manipulative as Ben, but he does use people like pawns to achieve his goals. Daniel stands out as a pawn in particular; he funds the boy's research, covers up his mistakes and pushes him to go to the island.
  • Character Development: Made especially obvious through flashbacks and time travel, he seems to have changed drastically from a hot-headed young mercenary grunt to a charismatic leader and husband, and then again to a cold and calculating industrial magnet, and then again to a slightly more mellow one.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Until Season 4 when his greater role in events is revealed more fully.
  • Cold Ham: Though he never raises his voice, Widmore has a very eloquent and theatrical manner of speaking.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Ben claims that he wants to exploit the powers of the island for his own gain. This may or may not be true. He also uses his money to fund many illegal operations.
  • Disappeared Dad: To Daniel, although he always remained in the background.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Like his enemy Ben, Widmore was hyped as a potential Big Bad only for Man in Black to be revealed as the actual Big Bad.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Despite the fact that he is a very bad person, Widmore does love his daughter dearly. He also loves Eloise and Daniel, even if he did send Daniel to die. To be fair to him, he was aware of the rules: whatever happened, happened. Daniel was always going to die.
  • Evil Brit: His nationality has little to do with his evil, but he is unquestionably an evil man despite his last-minute attempts at redemption.
  • Evil Old Folks: Subverted at the last minute. Widmore was always evil even as a young man, but makes a last-ditch effort to redeem himself in his old age.
  • Evil Versus Evil: With Ben, and later the Man in Black.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: In his teens. Age, evidently, served to mellow him.
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: When he showed up in Season 6 claiming to have redeemed himself, it was questionable as he still locked up the survivors in cages and his people even shot at them. When we finally realize Widmore meant his redemption, he is shot and killed by Ben, who never forgave him for his part in Alex's death.
  • Hot-Blooded: As a young man; Widmore's first chronological appearance has him angrily demand answers from Sawyer and Juliet at gunpoint, then ordering a crony to hack off one of Juliet's arms just to show that he's serious and to add weight to the threat of hacking off the other arm if he doesn't get answers. When Sawyer and Juliet desperately try to answer his questions, Widmore ignores them and tries to maim Juliet anyway. He's much more even-tempered by the time he's reached middle age, and as an old man, he's downright cold-blooded.
  • The Insomniac: Widmore begins having difficulty sleeping after the Oceanic Six return, claiming to suffer from 'nightmares'.
  • Irony: After years of being at odds with Ben over control of the Island, when Widmore finally makes it back to there, his priorities have totally changed, and resuming leadership over the Others means nothing to him anymore.
  • It's All About Me: He's willing to sacrifice anyone, even his son, to get the island back for himself.
  • Jerkass: Widmore is condescending and rude to just about everyone, but especially to Desmond. He flatly tells Des that he's not worthy of his daughter or even his whiskey.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He can certainly be manipulative, although not in the same way that Ben is. He doesn't match up to Ben, but makes up for it with his resources and ruthlessness.
  • Never My Fault: He was reluctant to admit any wrongdoing prior to the final season. Particularly highlighted in "The Shape of Things to Come" when Ben confronts him about Alex's death and Widmore retorts that it was Ben's fault and not his, which rings hollow given how Widmore unleashed Keamy on the island (who, even if he hadn't been ordered to kill Alex specifically, was clearly a sadistic man with little regard for handling the situation peacefully). It's made even worse in hindsight with the flashback in "Dead is Dead" revealing that Widmore instructed Ben to kill a baby Alex after she got in Ben's way of eliminating Rousseau.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: By necessity; Widmore is far from the Island during season 4, with Martin Keamy carrying out all the violence on Widmore's behalf.
  • Older and Wiser: In his youth, Widmore was arrogant, overly aggressive, and little more than an attack dog for Richard. By the time he's reached his forties, he's matured into a capable and much more even-tempered leader, although, as his present day actions show, the arrogance and aggression never quite left him.
  • Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: During his off-island conversation with Ben, Alan Dale lapses into his New Zealand accent a little.
  • Papa Wolf: For Penelope. Not for Daniel, though knowingly sending his son to his death does visibly weigh on Widmore's conscience (such as it is).
  • Pet the Dog: Played straight and subverted. He's very kind and gentle with Daniel Faraday but, while this seems genuine, it's all part of his manipulations. Played straighter when he's relieved to hear Desmond is going to survive his wound, finally just accepting that Desmond makes his daughter happy. He also helped Daniel's accidental 'victim' Theresa Spencer.
Abigail Spencer: He funded his research, and he took responsibility for the result of it. He's been taking care of Theresa ever since this happened to her. Everything here is due to Mr. Widmore, God bless him.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: His basic attitude, and what enables him to be such an effective chessmaster.
  • Smug Snake: He actually thought he could outgambit Ben and bragged about doing just that, before his plan was even finished.
"As usual, Benjamin, I'm three steps ahead of you."
  • Took a Level in Kindness: In the flash-sideways, he's got a bit of a short temper but he's a lot more pleasant. He's more pleasant in general during Season 6: he shows Jin photographs of his daughter and identifies with the pain he's feeling, is saddened by the accidental death of one of his men, and generally shows a more human side. He seems genuinely regretful of the life he's led, and where it led him to.
Widmore: My son died here for the sake of this island. Your wife - my own daughter - hates me. And I've never even met my grandson.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He makes the same claim as Ben when it comes to justifying his horrific actions: everything he did, he did for the island. Considering how Widmore was largely selfish, frequently made off-island trips and ordered Keamy to 'torch the island', it's unlikely he was sincere. In the final season, however, it seems that he did make a genuine shift to 'well intentions'.
  • Wicked Cultured: Widmore does have a taste for the finer things, like extremely expensive whiskey.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Not by his own hands, but he ordered Ben to kill a baby and chewed out Richard for not letting a 12-year-old Ben die. He takes a Never My Fault stance when it comes to harming children, unwilling to accept responsibility or do the deed with his own hands.

    Zoe

Zoe

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zoe_5685.jpg
"You have until nightfall to return what you took; or next time, we won't miss."
Played By: Sheila Kelley

Widmore: Well, you should have let him leave and taken him in the jungle.
Zoe: Well, maybe you should put a mercenary in charge instead of a geophysicist.

A geophysicist hired by Charles Widmore to lead his team on the Island.

  • Asshole Victim: Zoe was smug and arrogant, so it's hard to care much when the Man in Black slits her throat.
  • Character Death: The Man in Black slashes her throat.
  • Death by Irony: When confronted by Ben and the Man in Black, Widmore tells her not to talk in order to keep her alive. By telling her to stay silent, this makes her useless to the Man, who slits her throat in response.
  • The Dragon: The last of Charles Widmore's dragons, following somewhat successful runs from Keamy and Abaddon. By the time he got around to Zoe, the application process had clearly gotten less picky.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Zoe is always wearing a pair of glasses, and has no qualms about forced imprisonment or outright murder.
  • Jerkass: She's condescending and arrogant.
  • Smug Snake: She's overwhelmingly smug, talking down to Sawyer, the Man in Black and even her boss Widmore. She's not nearly as formidable as she thinks she is.
  • Slashed Throat: Courtesy of the Man in Black.

    Seamus

Seamus

A scientist who worked for Charles Widmore in 2007. He was brought to the Island as part of a support team.

  • Asshole Victim: Borders on Cruel and Unusual Death as well. When the Man in Black attacks Widmore's team at the Hydra in his smoke form, he flings Seamus into the air and smashes him so hard against one of the cages, it kills him instantly and leaves imprints of the bars on his face.
  • Jerkass: From what we see, Seamus is short-tempered and argumentative.
  • Red Shirt: He exists mostly to be killed by the Man in Black and make it seem like Widmore didn't just bring Zoe and a group of nameless peons.

    Abaddon

Matthew Abaddon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/abaddon_matthew_4601.jpg
Played By: Lance Reddick

Abaddon: Let me ask you something. Do you believe in miracles?
Locke: No. I don't believe in miracles.
Abaddon: You should. I had one happen to me.

An agent of Charles Widmore, whose job was to get people to "where they needed to be".

  • Affably Evil: Much more "affable" than "evil", from what we see. He's initially very pleasant to Hurley and he treats Locke with genuine sympathy.
  • Ambiguously Evil: He works for Charles Widmore. That's pretty much the only bad thing about him that we know of: Ben says he's an extremely dangerous man, but Ben is unreliable.
  • Bald of Evil: He's bald, but only Ambiguously Evil.
  • Character Death: Abaddon is shot to death by Ben.
  • The Dragon: For Charles Widmore.
  • The Driver: For Locke, eventually.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Abaddon makes an impression as a very threatening character and seems to have a lot of importance, but due to Lance Reddick's other job, he's rather suddenly killed by Ben.
  • Enigmatic Minion: Abaddon is confident, seemingly knowledgeable of the Island and hints at a Mysterious Past all while being Ambiguously Evil. Fans speculated about his possible identity and connection to the island before his sudden death. The fact his name is literally Abaddon does nothing to help cure the trees of their epilepsy.
  • In the Back: Ben shoots Abaddon in the back, and he turns around to get a few more gunshots.
  • Lean and Mean: Abaddon is very tall and thin-faced, adding to his creepiness.
  • Mysterious Past: We know very little about him. How did he come to work with Widmore? What was the 'miracle' that happened to him?
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Abaddon means "destruction" and "doom", and it's both a bottomless pit of destruction and an angel/demon of the abyss in Abrahamic lore.
  • Scary Black Man: Abaddon is very creepy and threatening during his conversation with Hurley.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: In all of his non-Locke related appearances.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: We find out next to nothing about him before his death.
