    Elmore Evans

Elmore Evans

The great and famed sheriff of Markwest, raised from a young age by his father to become a gunslinger without compare.

He is a devoted lawman, an impeccable gunman, an unflappable countenance, and utterly, completely dateless despite becoming a sheriff solely with the intention of it making him popular with women.

  • Beneath the Mask: Evans projects himself as a composed, ever-vigilant, incorruptible man who is basically the perfect, ideal sheriff. His internal thoughts and the narration make it pretty clear he's definitely not so much those things when you look inside his head, but he manages to get by presenting this image as much.
  • Blessed with Suck: Even if he became a stoic lawman just to be popular with women, Evans is legitimately a good sheriff and a terrific gunslinger. Sadly, his inability to get a date comes from both the way he interprets his old man's teachings about girls and from how highly people think of him. Even if he doesn't notice/doesn't have time to act, Evans is popular with women, but some circumstance always gets in his way (she's too young, too vain, a criminal etc). Being popular in general mean he must always keep up his stoic facade, so he sometimes has problems doing even the most simple of tasks (like buying porn), as he's afraid of being caught.
  • Casual Kink: Chapter 89 ends with Oakley brandishing a gun on a bounty target after bursting open the doors of a dresser while standing on Evans' back while his hands and knees, because there wasn't a lot of space in the dresser. Despite Oakley's apologies about how it made him look ridiculous, he was secretly kind of OK with it. Chapter 99 has him find he enjoys the sight of Oakley in a Meido uniform so much that he buys it for her (the reason neither found propriety failed in the situation was Oakley's excuse that she was trying it on wondering if she could use it to infiltrate a mansion for a bounty target) and was trying to take a picture of her in it.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: Elmore Evans literally became a gunslinging sheriff in the expectation it would make him popular with women. Unfortunately, that has not come to pass as he presents himself off so chivalrously that even if he does have a chance with one, he blows it by acting disinterested in the topic if he's just not terribly unlucky otherwise. He takes his chivalry so seriously that he's quite horrified when a thieving woman tries to throw him off her trail by accusing him of perversely bothering her. He of course has his moments of acting chivalrous toward Oakley, to her delight. He makes due with occasionally desperately trying to steal a glance at a pretty lady whenever he can.
  • Consummate Liar: It's called Lies of the Sheriff Evans for a reason. Evans rarely ever talks in a straightforward manner unless he thinks his reputation calls for it (such as honestly telling caught criminals what's going to happen to them as a sheriff should do) - at best, he's probably ambiguous and vague to best portray his stoic, always-vigilant persona. Even if people start suspecting his lies, circumstance will probably seem to exonerate him (while still never getting him a date). That being said, he doesn't fool Nona, which leaves her mocking him behind his back.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: As much as he tries to project he doesn't (which Ted believes), he is. But of course, he doesn't get to see anywhere near as much sexy as he'd like no matter how he tries, but his attempts at least never break his veneer of imperturbability.
  • Fake Ultimate Hero: Downplayed - while Evans really is quite the amazing gunslinger and a great sheriff, he's knowingly inflated his own mystique through his actions and statements. He's definitely not that observant, unflappable, all-knowing, etc. Fortunately, no one manages to see through it (aside from Nona, who doesn't seem to be interested in revealing this to everyone and just mocks him behind his back) through a combination of a cool head and outrageous luck. He's basically a sexless sheriff version of Ciaphas Cain.
  • Goggles Do Nothing: Subverted Trope - Evans usually doesn't wear his sunglasses that he has atop his hat, which one would imagine would get a lot more use in the sunbeaten west even with his constantly worn hat, but he will wear them at times along with wearing a scarf over his face to help conceal his identity.
  • The Gunslinger: He's trained his gunslinging with his father since he was a boy, and his present life proved it paid off - Blasting It Out of Their Hands isn't even difficult for him, but instead standard. He can blast it out of a lot of hands before their holders even get to shoot at him.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Downplayed - he never does get really terrible over it, but he is consistently internally jealous when ever any other man has the spotlight, especially with women. The exception is with Ted, where Evans becoming certain that Nona is Ted's girlfriend just fills his mind with excited questions about the two.
  • Instrument of Murder: He once took a guitar around town with him to make it look like he could play it (he can't). When people started to logically want to hear him play and prove their expectations, he broke the thing by whacking someone with it in an upcoming fight (despite how his Quick Draw ability would logically be the first thing he should rely on).
  • Invincible Hero: He's half-and-half - he never loses a fight and keeps face for whatever reason, but he'll never get the girl.
  • Married to the Job: Evans does well to give off this impression. However, as he would quite like to actually get married, this reputation is quite self-defeating for him.
  • Never Bareheaded: Virtually always seen wearing his cowboy hat, which is probably the way he thinks his reputation likes. Invoked and Lampshaded when Evans avoids to be seen by Oakley without his hat and when she becomes very excited seeing him at a barber and thus a possibility to see him with his hat off.
  • Not So Stoic: So it'll seem to some others at times - despite his best attempts, he isn't completely unflappable and the odd situations can make him outright display his emotion (like finding out Oakley's prettied up in a dress right when he was going along with her to a secret attack on a gang hideout, which audibly shocks him. The customary communication issues meant she thought he was inviting her to a party, you see)
  • Porn Stash: Evans has one, though he always finds himself having to dispose of it to keep Oakley and others from finding out.
    • He stored some in a combination safe in the office once, and then immediately covered it in chains with a keylock as well when it turned out that Ted knew how to safecrack, as trustworthy as Ted is.
  • Quick Draw: He can shoot the guns out of the hands multiple people already aiming at him, before they ever get the chance to fire.
  • Slave to PR: Evans never fails to uphold his reputation as unflappable, prepared, and observant...even if dropping that demeanor for a second might actually give him a chance to get a date for once. Chapter 124 has him manage to run over water to hide his inability to swim and fear of being submerged in front of Oakley.
  • The Stoic: Evans' demeanor. He actually isn't, but he quite successfully acts like he is. Too well, actually, considering how many women he seemed to have a chance with before his manner stops them from pressing on with him.
  • Unluckily Lucky: Evans might seem to never find himself a lady, but his stoic, skilled and vigilant reputation have been challenged enough by his circumstances that it's still highly surprising that all of those things known about him never turn out to get deflated in the end.
  • Urban Legend Love Life: Evans has never lost his virginity, but he's ambiguous whenever answering about the matter of his love life that some people have managed to think he even sleeps around and Oakley is frequently worried some woman about is an ex of his. He's even willing to subtly encourage it in the hopes that it might get some looser women headed to his direction.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Almost every time Evans has a chance to get with a woman, his legitimate desire to do right gets in the way, be it that the woman turns out to be a criminal, or he is too busy trying to catch a criminal to go on a date.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Despite being a shooter that would make Simo Häyhä look like he had the shakes, Evans is quite scared of spooky situations that makes him think of ghosts. He shares this trait with Oakley. He is also afraid of being underwater, due to being unable to swim despite efforts during his childhood training.

    Phoebe Oakley

Phoebe Oakley

The famed Bounty Hunter, said to be the second-best shot in the west after Evans. Because of this, she never fails to take every opportunity to appear to him to show off or try to show him up.

Or so she says that is her motive.

  • Action Girl: Phoebe Oakley being Always Second Best to Elmore Evans at shooting means she's miles better than the very long list of all the other gunslinging men of the West.
  • Always Second Best: Oakley's always just a bit behind Evans in shooting ability and collars, which is why they're rivals. Well, rivals-ish.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Despite not being Evans' girlfriend, Oakley will pretty much immediately feel threatened and try to do something about any sort of woman associating with Evans that Oakley can't rule out as having a romantic relationship with him.
  • The Gunslinger: Oakley's only second to Evans at this schtick, and she already won various shooting contests when she was only 10.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: Due to the usual communication issues in Chapter 105, Oakley dolls herself up thinking Evans invited her to a party while he actually thought she got word that the mayor ordered an attack on a gang's hideout. The volume's omake shows she just went along with it and still shot up the place in her gloves and dress, passing the events of the assault off as being like a party anyway.
  • Money for Nothing: Due to all of the successful bounty hunting (and occasional bounty rewards given to her by Evans in his place) and her own lack of interest in fashion or hobbies, Chapter 123 shows that Oakley has a completely full chest stuffed with her money that she doesn't have any interest in spending on anything aside from necessities. She ends up deciding to donate to charity by the chapter's end.
  • The Rival: Oakley considers herself to be Evans' rival, ever since he handed her her first defeat in a shooting competition when they were younger. She takes it so seriously that she'll bypass several other closer towns with sheriffs just to drag a bounty to Evans, for the sole purpose of showing off and claiming she's better than him. Until it's clearly just an excuse to see him as much as possible for its own sake.
  • Stalker Shrine: Downplayed, Oakley's never outright seen to have one of these for Evans, but she did weirdly collect as many different wanted posters of him as she could, so she might be close for being capable of making one.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Oakley might be one of the best Bounty Hunters ever, second only (Always) to Evans in collars, and usually puts up a strong front to others but she's got a few especially-feminine characteristics about her, like her mostly-sensible clothing still having her always wearing a red ribbon tied on the top of her head and a skirt, or her quite-girly hopeful romantic notions from examining Evans' actions (granted, Evans goes over her with as much of a fine comb, though it's clearly at the impetus of his father's teachings), and some that she keeps under wraps (like keeping a Meido outfit that she never wears in public, but she likes to look in the mirror with it on in private).
  • True Blue Femininity: The shirtdress that Oakley usually wears makes the dominant color of her outfit blue, along with her blue eyes. This is in contrast to Evans' red shirt.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Oakley is just as scared of the possibility of ghosts as Evans is, unsurprisingly.
