The Land of Stories, Fairy Tale Characters

    Evly

Evly, the Evil Queen

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/6ea72b4e_9be6_4134_bd9d_89e6f69140c5.jpeg

  • Alas, Poor Villain: She Used to Be a Sweet Kid before her True Love was stolen from her and trapped in a mirror. Everything she has done since then has been towards bringing him back and reclaiming the Happily Ever After that was taken from them.
  • …And That Little Girl Was Me: How she delivers her backstory.
  • Big Bad: Of the first book, "The Wishing Spell."
  • Break the Cutie: Part of her backstory.
  • Freudian Excuse: Her first love Mira was trapped in the mirror by the Enchantress, leading to her taking cruel actions to obtain the Wishing Spell and free him.
  • God Save Us from the Queen!: She was so wrapped up in working to bring Mira back and preserving her looks for him, she completely neglected the kingdom her husband had left her with, and hurt those who spoke out against her and thus jeopardized her quest.
  • The Lost Lenore: She never got over her first love, Mira, and spends the rest of her life trying to bring him back.
  • Innocence Lost: Before being taken by the Enchantress and having her first love trapped.
  • Offing the Offspring / Murder the Hypotenuse: She tries to have her stepdaughter killed, as in the initial fairy tale, but her actual motivation is because her previous lover has fallen in love with Snow, thinking that Snow is Evly.
  • Took a Level in Cynic: After her ordeal with the Enchantress.
  • Tragic Villain: She was once a beautiful and beloved young girl engaged to the love of her life, seemingly destined to live Happily Ever After…until Mira was kidnapped and imprisoned in the magic mirror. To avoid heartache, she ripped out her heart and literally had it turned to stone so that she could no longer feel any sort of emotional pain.
  • Vain Sorceress: Justified in that her first love no longer recognized her due to aging. She undergoes extensive beauty regimens with potions from Morina to preserve what little youth she has left.
  • Wicked Stepmother: While she initially doesn't hold much animosity to her stepdaughter, trying to have her killed definitely tips her over this edge.

Red Riding Hood

  • Adaptational Jerkass: Presented to be more shallow and self-centered than in the actual Red Riding Hood story.
  • Affectionate Nickname: "Red."
  • The Ditz: Calls William Shakespeare "Billy Shakeyfruit."
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Tried to ruin Goldilocks’s life all because Jack loved her.
  • Dumb Blonde
  • God Save Us from the Queen!: Not actively malicious, but also clearly has no business being queen of her own kingdom.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Is so upset that Jack loves Goldilocks that she plans to Murder the Hypotenuse to get rid of her competition.
  • Happily Married: to Prince Charlie Charming.
  • Hidden Depths: As shallow as Red is, she still has moments of kindness and can offer great insight.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Underneath all her selfishness and ego, Red truly cares.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Red’s apology letter to Goldilocks before she breaks her out of jail.
  • It's All About Me: Red is so self-absorbed, that when her new kingdom needs a name, the first thing she does after being crowned Queen is name it after herself.
  • The Load: As Conner himself points out, she's generally the least useful member on their quests.
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: She may be a Royal Brat lording over the Center Kingdom, but she has a Hidden Heart of Gold.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: When she finds out that Jack loves Goldilocks, she tries to get Goldilocks killed, or at least arrested.
  • Pet the Dog: It’s shown that she does truly care for her subjects when she refuses to give up her kingdom to the Enchantress. Red also gives away her diamond bracelet without hesitation to pay for the costs of building new roads. While spoiled, she does try to improve the state of her kingdom, even going as far to build a House of Progress in later books.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: Most of her dresses are this as she tries to get Jack’s attention. Later on, her attire becomes less overdone but is still quite fancy. At one point, Conner and Alex even sneak their way into a meeting by hiding under her giant skirt.
  • Proud Beauty: According to her, forget Snow White. As far as Red’s concerned, she’s the fairest of them all.
  • Rich Bitch: Especially to Goldilocks.
  • Royal Brat: She was already a brat before, but got upgraded to Royal Brat when she was voted Queen.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: She’s been head over heels for Jack since they were kids, even going so far as to try to get rid of any competition she has for his heart.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Whenever she has to work together with Goldilocks.
  • Unlimited Wardrobe: Red’s favorite part about being Queen.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Becomes this somewhat with Goldilocks later on.

     The Enchantress

Ezmia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b57a5213_a9fe_4dc2_8059_0ebc7dd7acf9.jpeg

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Was alienated from the other fairies of the council due to jealousy of her talents.
  • The Big Bad: Of the second book.
  • Black Magic: After Evly stabs her with a poisoned dagger, all the good in her dies and she’s severely weakened. She eventually recovers but now her magic is fueled by anger, meaning that true love’s kiss can no longer break her curses.
  • Break the Cutie: Her backstory involves changing from a hopeful girl to the cruel Enchantress.
  • The Chosen One: Was originally going to be the Fairy Godmother’s successor before becoming cruel.
  • Collector of the Strange: Collects her ex-lovers’ souls in jars. Justified in that she needs to do so to open a portal to the Otherworld.
  • The Conqueror: Tried opening a portal to conquer both the fairytale world and the Otherworld.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Has purple hair and eyes.
  • Dangerous Deserter: Left the Fairy Council during her descent into evil.
  • Dark Lord on Life Support: Becomes this after Alex takes away the source of her magic: her anger. She has to rely on the Wand of Wonderment to stay alive and perishes soon after when it’s broken.
  • Despotism Justifies the Means
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Responds to past lovers breaking her heart by capturing their souls in jars. Also suggested to flood their territory to deal with the “troll and goblin problem.”
  • Driven to Villainy: All the other fairies shunned her out of jealousy, and every boy she loved rejected her.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Subverted in the end when her henchman Rumplestiltskin, the closest thing she has to a friend, dies. Ezmia is so far gone at that point that the only thing she cares about is losing or winning. This causes Alex to be repulsed.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Alex. Both were the Fairy Godmother’s heirs and originally came from the Otherworld. Both experienced heartbreak, but Alex was able to overcome it while Ezmia descended into evil. Ezmia serves as a representation of what would happen to Alex if she were to go too far.
  • Evil Former Friend: To the Fairy Council, especially the Fairy Godmother.
  • Evil Plan: To rule both worlds.
  • Evil Sorceress: THE Evil Sorceress who famously cursed Sleeping Beauty.
  • Face–Heel Turn: After multiple heartbreaks and a dismissal from the Happily Ever After Council Ezmia turned her back on the world and became the Enchantress.
  • Fallen Hero: Was once a promising good fairy who was Driven to Villainy by constant rejection from others.
  • Fashionable Evil: She may be evil, but dang, the girl knows how to dress.
  • Foil: To Alex.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Started off as a normal little girl in the Otherworld to nearly succeeding in taking over 2 worlds.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Uses this to her advantage to reenergize her magic.
  • High Collarof Doom: Wears a purple gown with a high collar.
  • Kneel Before Zod: When demanding the rulers to hand over their kingdoms.
  • Last Villain Stand: After Alex takes away the source of her magic, she manages to get the Wand of Wonderment and tries continuing with her plans. It doesn’t last long since the wand is quickly broken after.
  • Narcissist: Is stated to value herself the most.
  • Older Than They Look: Is implied to be this due to her magic keeping her beautiful. She was a young woman during the tale of Beauty and the Beast. Years later after Sleeping Beauty has woken up, it is revealed that Beauty was her ancestor, indicating that Ezmia has been around for quite a long time.
  • Ominous Opera Cape: Has a “ghostly cape flowed around her and through the halls like a thick sheet of smoke.”
  • Pride: Stated to be the trait she values most about herself.
  • Psycho Ex-Girlfriend: Turned the Musician's new lover into an instrument after she found out he was cheating on her.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Or womanchild in this case. In a The Reason You Suck speech, Alex calls her a “brat.”
  • Purple Is Powerful: Purple hair, purple clothes, purple magic…also one of the most formidable foes in the fairytale world.
  • Rapid Aging: Happens when Alex apologizes for her past, thus taking away her anger — the source of her magic.
  • The Soulless: Implied to be this. Justified that being stabbed by Evly with the poison dagger killed all the good left in her.
  • Start of Darkness: This happens over the course of multiple heartbreaks. Doesn’t help that this pain is magnified by a curse placed by other witches.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Is described as tall and beautiful.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Until she was isolated out of jealousy and rejected by the men she loved.
  • Woman Scorned: If you don’t return your love, she’ll curse either you or your lover…or both.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Originally when coming into the fairytale world before heartbreak transformed her.
