Leadership and heroes

Queen Jennah

The monarch of Kryta, the last of the human kingdoms in Tyria. Also a highly skilled mesmer.
  • Ambiguously Brown: One of the few Krytans to still look the part.
  • Ambiguous Situation: She was reported to have been involved in a meeting with a villain, which was investigated by her own Secret Police, and the truth of the situation was never fully revealed. At a different point an artifact that would show the true heir of Kryta was brought up, implying she may not even be the rightful queen, but the plot was ultimately dropped.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Queen of Kryta, and one of the most powerful mesmers in the world. Despite having bodyguards at her command, she is far from a slouch in a fight.
Logan Thackeray: (After Queen Jennah finishes a curb-stomp battle) That... That was an impressive show, Your Majesty.
The Commander: It was. How'd you like smashing things to solve your problems?
Queen Jennah: I never want to take up arms against one of my subjects, but... I think I might be quite suited for your lifestyle!
The Commander: I'll save a spot for you in Dragon's Watch if you ever decide to step down.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: In Living World Season 3, she picks off White Mantle assassins with a single blast of mesmer magic - all while asking them if they were surprised by Minister Estelle's betrayal.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: She's incredibly skilled, and her skillset as a mesmer means that she can bring her own backup to a fight. She also has scores of vastly less capable bodyguards, and in Edge of Destiny swore Logan to her service.
  • Cool Sword: She uses a Whisperblade in battle.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Despite always having been on the side of the heroes, Jennah is a sketchy character under her amicable surface. She employs a Secret Police that answer to no one and regularly keep secrets from both her royal guard and personal companion. She allows said organization to take unconditional control over someone's freedom as a punishment. She formed a bond with Logan that compels him to come to her side against his will (which had some very deadly consequences once). During a coup attempt she unilaterally suspends the rest of the government and temporarily imprisons them all, both innocent and guilty, then proceeds to toy with the traitors like a cat, more in line with how a villain is expected to react when completely outclassing their opponents than a hero.
  • The High Queen: She's a competent and well-liked ruler, despite the opposition she receives from many of the nobles.
  • Impossibly-Low Neckline: It's a wonder her clothes are able to cover her breasts.
  • Prefers Going Barefoot: She is never seen wearing shoes.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She has the best intentions of her people in mind and the player earns her trust very easily, allowing them to do as they please.
  • Royal Blood
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Her political actions are often very sound, the truce between the humans and Charr being among them. Also, in Edge of Destiny she was able to project an illusion of Kralkatorrik, saving everyone in Ebonhawke from an onslaught of branded ogres.

Countess Anise

Master Exemplar and leader of the Shining Blade, Kryta's elite soldier force.
  • Ambiguously Bi: If the human player character is nobility and agrees to investigate Minister Zamon's party, she'll go with them as their date and flirt with them regardless of gender.
  • Blue Blood: One of the most important figures among the Krytan high nobility.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Anise isn't above underhanded tactics to achieve whatever is necessary to protect the Queen.
  • High-Class Gloves: Her fancy outfits include long gloves.
  • Of Corsets Sexy: She wears what appears to be a corset.
  • Older Than They Look: Implied by Canach, due to her mastery of illusions. She gets very defensive when he brings up the possibility.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure
  • The Spymaster: As the leader of the Shining Blade, she's the queen's top informant and organises all manners of information throughout Kryta.

Dougal Keane

A human member of a group that helped retrieve the Claw of Khan-Ur from the ruins of Ascalon (one of the things that made the Human-Charr treaty possible). He is currently a member of the Vigil serving as a tutor for the new members of the order.

Minister/Confessor Caudecus Beetlestone

The cunning Legate Minister of Kryta, who desperately wants the Queen's throne.
  • Bald of Evil: He has a completely bald head, which doesn't make him look any nicer.
  • Beard of Evil: A most suspicious blond goatee.
  • Blue Blood: One of the most important noblemen in Kryta.
  • The Corrupter: Upset that Lady Wi helped his daughter Demmi run away and join the Order of Whispers, Caudecus seduces and corrupts Lady Wi's own daughter, Valette Wi, into joining the White Mantle in revenge.
  • Fantastic Racism: Caudecus has a low opinion of Charr at best. This is best shown through one of his puzzles, revealing that he consider Charr to be dumber than cats.
  • Karma Houdini: He is behind most of the trouble human players encounter in their early personal storyline, and behind the events at his mansion, but always has a perfect scapegoat or a convenient lack of incriminating evidence to get himself out of any suspicion. As of Season 3 of the Living Story, though, all bets are off, as he's finally been revealed to be, by his own admission, no less than the supreme leader of the White Mantle, meaning he's basically under sentence of death. Finally killed off at the end of Head of the Snake.
  • Killed Off for Real: At the end of Head of the Snake, and not before time too.
  • Man Behind the Man: In the personal story for human characters. He has shadowy dealings with the bandits, centaur slavers, and separatists, using all of them to weaken the support for the queen. In addition, Living Story Season 3 reveals that he's the Man Behind The Man Behind The Man. Remember the White Mantle, the Path of Inspiration that used to control Kryta and has been controlling the bandits and other factions working against Queen Jennah? He leads them.
  • Not Me This Time: During the attack on his manor and the attempted kidnapping of the Queen, he protests that he had nothing to do with it and Queen Jennah herself believes him. In hindsight, notes found lying around his manor tying him to the Separatists who were behind the attack suggest he was even lying about this.
  • Offing the Offspring: When he's about to be defeated in his manor and in a fit of Bloodstone induced madness, he shoots Demmi in the stomach and she later dies from this wound.
  • Sword and Gun: Wields both a Royal Rapier and a fancy pistol when you finally confront him in Living Story S3E4.
  • Together in Death: Kills Demmi and rationalizes it by claiming they'll be a family again in the afterlife.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: He is well liked by the common populace, especially because of the carnival he sponsors.

Demmi Beetlestone

Caudecus's daughter, who becomes disgusted with her father's actions and requests the Order of Whispers to help her escape his clutches.
  • Blue Blood
  • BFG: Tybalt gives her one of his rifles for the fight against Langdon, and she handles it surprisingly well despite it being almost as big as she is. When you meet her again in Season 4, she still has it.
  • Damsel in Distress: Your first meeting involves saving her from pirates.
  • Together in Death: Never lost her affection and gratitude towards Tybalt, and sees a vision of him coming to escort her to The Mists when her father kills her. Considering he can be recruited as a champion, it's entirely possible he actually did do so.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Starts off as a Damsel in Distress in need of rescue from her father's men. She quickly comes to the conclusion that she can't run forever and takes up a rifle to defend herself from them, then goes on to joining the Order of Whispers.

Commander Wade Samuelsson

Leader of the Ebon Vanguard and the Duke of Ebonhawke, as well as a descendant of the kings of Ascalon.

Personal-story only

Commander Serentine

Leader of the Ministry Guard, and an early antagonist for human characters with the Commoner background.
  • Arc Villain: In the "Commoner" personal story.
  • Dirty Cop: Has been routinely smuggling crooks out of the (Seraph-run) prison so they can keep committing crimes and make the Seraph look bad.
  • Carry a Big Stick: Favors a mace in combat.
  • Jerkass
  • Jurisdiction Friction: The Ministry Guard is officially in charge of security for nobles and governmental ministers, but she spends the level 10 personal story trying to horn in on Seraph investigations among the commoners.
  • Magic Knight
  • Smug Snake

Quinn

The player's childhood friend, if they chose the "Street Rat" background. A loyal but bumbling young man, he gets in deep trouble with Two-Blade Pete and his pack of criminals. The hero and Logan eventually uncover a plot to poison Divinity's Reach through its water supply. But should they rush to the city's aid, they will be unable to save Quinn from being killed by Pete's thugs.
  • Killed Off for Real: If you don't go to save him, then Pete's thugs brutally murder him. Rumors say that half of him was found in the lake and the other half in the fountain.
  • Loveable Rogue

Two-Blade Pete

Quinn's boss. He leads one of the bandit gangs in Kryta, and may or may not have had a story with the player in the "Street Rat" background.

Petra

The player character's friend from the "Commoner" background.

Lord Faren

The player character's friend and fellow noble from the "Noble" background. He throws you a party to celebrate your recovery. With everything taken from your kitchen.
  • Agent Peacock: He's pretty good with a sword, and not afraid to get dirty despite his flamboyant mannerisms.
  • Blue Blood
  • Breakout Character: Originally a character who only showed up in specific personal story instances, Faren proved popular enough that Arenanet reused his character for multiple Living Story seasons, and appeared in the expansions (albeit with a minor role in Path of Fire)
  • Butt-Monkey: Many of his Living Story appearances have him in the role of the unluckiest Krytan noble ever. In a Southsun Cove Living Story event, he's forced to "take a sabbatical" after Chauncey von Snuffles III didn't win first place in the fanciest cat contest; and during the Clockwork Chaos event he was taken hostage by Scarlet Briar.
  • Casanova Wannabe: Elements of this. Oddly, he never hits on female player characters despite flirting with anything else female. Given he's known the player for a while and is probably well aware of her ability to use many weapons and/or set him on fire with a thought, he probably knows better.
  • The Dandy: Actually averted since he's not concerned about the consequences of getting physical, though he does like to wear sensible shoes and 'fighting' coiffures to said fights.
  • Didn't Think This Through: His appearance in the Heart of Thorns expansion. When the Pact attempts its incursion into Magus Falls, Faren takes his personal airship to journey alongside them with the intention of 'cheering them on'. When the assault goes pear-shaped, he and the other Krytan nobles he invited with him become stranded in the incredibly-hostile jungle world.
  • Disney Death: Fell towards the bottom of Crown Pavilion during the Closing Ceremony while trying to rescue Queen Jennah (which was an illusion), but somehow manages to survive as Scarlet's captive.
  • Distressed Dude: As Scarlet's captive.
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: Name-drops this trope in his letter at the end of "Clockwork Chaos" (the third chapter of the revived Season One).
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Regardless of the situation, even life-threatening ones, Faren has a strong preference to fight in fine attire. However, Palawa Joko slaughtering a crew of fellow Krytans sailing to Amnoon made him downright furious and decided Joko had to pay for his crimes. How angry did he get? Angry enough to wear proper armor.
  • Pretty Boy
  • Took a Level in Badass:
    • Zigzagged in Heart of Thorns. When he's found, he's wearing a loincloth and proclaims that he's a new man and has mastered the jungle... despite having been there for all of three hours. Then you help him complete his swordsman training, and he fights alongside you in the last few chain events as "Swordsmaster Faren". He's still a bit of a dolt, but going from having no fighting skills to having some fighting skills is a level in badass nonetheless.
    • By Living Story Season 3, it seems to have stuck. Faren is present during the ministry meeting that kicks off chapter 4, and he easily holds his own against the White Mantle and traitorous ministry guards when the meeting is attacked.
    • Much to the surprise of everybody, including the Commander, he takes another during Living Story Season 4, nearly getting himself killed by Awakened and the Scarab Plague to help get much-needed ammunition to the front lines at Gandara.
  • Took a Level in Dumbass: Not that Faren was ever a genius or even smart per say, but he wasn't stupid either. By the time of Heart of Thorns however, he seems to have misplaced most of his brain cells. It's the only explanation why he thought it was a good idea to tag along with the Pact fleet on his personal airship into deadly dragon territory, convinced himself that he became the master of the jungle after three hours, being unable to recognize that Bongo the One-Eyed really don't like him, and only realizing during a battle with a deadly wyvern that a loincloth wasn't the best choice of attire.
  • Upperclass Twit: A bit of one, but he's somewhat aware of it and not above poking fun at himself too.
