Orin and His Allies

    In General

    Orin
Voiced by: Mark Oliver (male), Rachel Robinson (female)

The main character. In the past, Orin teamed up with his brother, Macros, to bring about the Upheaval, a war where they united the Valorians to destroy their creators and former masters, the Archons. Afterwards, Orin was Macros' right hand. But when Macros revealed his intentions to ascend to godhood and recreate the world in his image, Orin tried to put a stop to him in another war called the Schism. The end of the Schism resulted in Orin losing. Though his armies have been destroyed, Orin still continues his campaign against Macros in order to protect Aperion from Macros' tyranny.

  • A Father to His Men: Despite their initially more abrasive attitude towards Zenun and the Seventh Sanctum, Orin shows nothing but compassion and concern for those who serve directly under them, as seen in the Exalted Update with new interactions with both Ravenna and Soras, as well as the various soldiers you encounter.
  • Action Girl: Some Valorplates allow Orin to become a woman, invoking this trope. He is still male, according to canon.
  • The Atoner: Orin's journal states that he regrets his part in the Unification, a war that brought about the enslavement and/or banishment of the Tetrarchy. He sought to preserve the truth of what happened within the Seventh Sanctum.
  • Blood Knight: An almost literal example, being a Valorian Knight and all. Even when warned by the Seventh Sanctum and Zenun of hostile hordes in new territories or the advance of Macros' forces towards him, Orin replies that adversity forges strength or how battle proves a warrior's worth.
  • Cain and Abel: Orin and Macros are brothers and were once close allies but Macros' desire to become a god led him to betray Orin and fight him. Now, you play as him in his quest for revenge against Macros.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Though a no-nonsense warrior that dismisses his enemies as nothing but mere obstacles in his path, Orin has a noticeable distaste for the Abyssians, giving their penchant for petrifying their targets and storing them for later uses. He calls them "vile things" and you can hear in his tone of voice his sheer disgust when talking about them.
  • Game-Favored Gender: And Game Favored Valorplate. Despite the Lore Codex refusing to use any pronouns for Orin, the opening cutscene, artwork and one Chronicle of the Wolf entry make it distinctly clear that Orin is canonically a male and a wielder of the Silvermane Valorplate. It doesn't help that the name Orin is typically a boy's name.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Though he can wield a multitude of melee weapons, Orin seems to favor swords. It's his default weapon and how he fought Macros in the opening cutscene. It's also how he finishes him off in their second fight.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Orin is very stern and impatient, but does show concern for those he's allied with. And he stands fiercely against Macros' madness and ambition which threatens the realms. Made even more prominent after the Exalted Update, which gives him more opportunities to interact with his troops and show his softer side.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Inverted with Orin and Macros. Orin, who wears red under his armor in the opening cutscene, is the more reasonable brother while Macros, who has predominately blue armor, has a more Violence is the Only Option mentality. Macros has even called Orin "the voice of [his] better nature".
  • The Stoic: Both as a man or as a woman, Orin's voice doesn't carry much emotion. Even when expressing anger, it's more of a Tranquil Fury than anything.
  • Tranquil Fury: Whenever Orin displays any anger, he does it like this. His final battle with Macros has him speaking with a more aggravated tone of voice than ever before in the game- but never breaking away from his usual stoicism.

    The Seventh Sanctum
Voiced by: Emily O'Brien

The Sanctums were built to be repositories for Valorian history and culture. Of the seven originally created, the Seventh Sanctum is the last of them. She assists Orin in his quest to destroy Macros.

    Zenun Earthminder
Voiced by: Feodor Chin

A talented godsmith and an old friend of Orin's.

  • Distressed Dude: When Orin first finds him, he's been kidnapped by the Vargul.
  • The Faceless: Practically all Valorians are this, but the kicker with Zenun is that he doesn't have anything to cover his face, yet all players see is a glowing head.
  • Nice Guy: He's rather cheerful and friendly.

    Ravenna
Voiced by: Debra Wilson

Orin's guard captain, according to the flavor text for Ravenna's Crescent Glaive. She has the Phoenix Valorplate.

  • Action Girl: Being a Valorian that wears the Phoenix Valorplate makes her this.

    Soras
Voiced by: Andrew Pifko

A Valorian allied with Orin. He has the Greyhawk Valorplate.

  • Eager Rookie: Compared to Orin and Ravenna, he's more inexperienced and tends to rush into fights without thinking. This gets him killed by Gilden Commander.
  • Killed Off for Real: Following the Exalted Update, Soras and Ravenna were given more prominent and active roles... resulting in Soras dying while fighting Gilden Commander, instead of an unnamed Greyhawk.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Dies this way. On his own spear no less.

    Saba
A Trolloc from the Vargul Tribes who left to become a Godsmith under Zenun's tutelage, and replaces him following his death.

Macros and His Forces

    In General

    Macros
Voiced by: Jim Pirri

Orin's brother, who betrayed him in a bid to ascend to godhood.

  • Big Bad: Of the main story.
  • Blood Knight: To be fair, a lot of Valorians have this, but Macros could easily be the poster child of this for his people.
  • Didn't Think This Through: he didn't stop to check if the Rites of Ascension would kill him as a blood sacrifice rather than make him a god.
  • Fantastic Racism: He has no love for the Tetrarchy, even those who have been his greatest allies. In fact, it was him who initiated the Unification of Aperion, which lead to the Tetrarchy either being turned into vassals or exiled.
  • Godhood Seeker: His overall goal is to become a god.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: In Chronicle of the Wolf 3, Macros admits that although Orin was an obstacle in his path, he felt immense guilt in betraying him. He actually mourned for him after the battle that set off the events of the story. However, he didn't feel guilty enough to abandon his quest to become a god.
  • Savage Wolf: His Animal Motif is a wolf and he's reputed to be merciless.
  • The Sociopath: Almost played straight. The way Orin's Journal describes his action can best be described as this trope. He's manipulativenote , has a grandiose sense of self-worthnote  and a need for stimulationnote . What keeps Macros from fully being this trope is that he actually is capable of caring for others and displaying empathy towards them; specifically Orin and his people as a whole.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: He has a number of troops who are genuinely loyal to him and wish to see him become a god. Being one of two heroes of the war against the Archons (the other being Orin) certainly helps.

    Zamora, the Far-Seeing
Voiced by: Keri Tombazian

The Exarch of the Vargul who united the tribes under her rule for Macros.

Lunara, Guardian Avatar of the Silver Moon

    Grieves Sunsteel
Voiced by: Ray Chase

One of the first godsmiths in existence and a controversial figure in Valorian history.

  • Bad Boss: Grieves is notorious for using scores of his apprentices' souls for his creations. When everyone found out what he had done, he was banished.
  • Playing with Fire: In addition to being a godsmith, he's a savant when it comes to fire magic.
  • Ultimate Blacksmith: Godsmiths are this in general, but Grieves gets a special mention for not only being one of the first, but one of the most talented.
  • We Can Rule Together: Right before his boss fight, he tries to convince Orin to join Macros' side. It doesn't work.

    Gilden Commander
Voiced by: Jason Charles Miller

Macros' new second-in-command after he and Orin declared war on each other.

  • Bling of War: In a world where armor is very shiny, the Gilden Commander's is especially shiny by comparison.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": He does have a name, but everyone has been calling him Gilden Commander ever since he took the position.
  • Hero Killer: Kills Soras in his pre-boss cutscene.
  • Large and in Charge: The Gilden Commander is a good two-to-five heads taller than Orin.
  • Mind over Matter: Displays telekinetic abilities when he uses them to block a sword thrown at him by Soras.
  • No-Sell: Receiving a spear to the shoulder does not phase him at all.

The Tetrarchy

    Vargul Tribes
The Vargul are reptilian-like creatures that live in a communal society where they put the tribe over their individual needs. Each tribe is ruled by a matron. By the start of the story, the tribes are united by Zamora, who has allied herself with Macros.

  • Noble Savage: While they are allied with Macros and are formidable foes, their culture paints them more as this. For instance, they see the art of healing as sacred and invading tribes will spare healers.

    Abyssian Host

    Nyak Kindred
A spiritual people whose entire society is comprised of different warrior cults. Their race physically resembles Valorians the most.

  • In Harmony with Nature: Most of the cults revolve around nature, such as the Ley Runner cult which channels geological force through their bodies, and the Huracan, which command the wind.
  • Religious Bruiser: All of them are this.

    Flameblood

Other Bosses

    Solaris

    Moirax (SPOILERS UNMARKED)
The main antagonist of the Fire and Darkness expansion, Moirax(or rather, The Moirax) is actually three separate beings that form a kind of three-piece mind; the Black Flame, Deceiver and Fallen Hero. They launch an invasion on Aperion, invade the hub world, kill Zenun, and steal Sanctum's light, prompting Orin to once again go on a vengeful rampage.
  • Dark Messiah: Possibly, due to them being the leader of the Flameblood. It's unclear whether they're loyal out of respect or fear.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: The Black Flame and Fallen Hero both sound deep, the Black Flame most of all.
  • Fallen Hero: Implied with, well, the Fallen Hero.
  • Hero Killer: The Deceiver and Fallen Hero murdered Zenun Earthminder.
  • Knight of Cerebus: The moment they show up, things get far more serious; even though Macros was a threat, his defeat was relatively clean(aside from Soras' death). The Moirax kills Zenun in their first appearance, and being slain unleashes the Darkness, which Sanctum is barely able to restrain to the Monolith.
  • Orcus on His Throne: Played with. Their first appearance has them invading the hub world to kill Zenun and steal Sanctum's light, but after that they're content to just sit back and let Orin come to them due to sheer confidence in their power.
  • Satanic Archetype: And how. Visually they all fit the bill, and each one has a fitting name. The Fallen Hero represents Lucifer's former status as a high-ranking angel, The Deceiver represents his status as the Prince of Lies, and the Black Flame represents his tendency to pervert Christian imagery to his own end(fire being heavily associated with God's wrath). It doesn't end there however; Moirax is themselves likely a twisted parody of God's own three-pronged nature, with the Fallen Hero, Deceiver and Black Flame each being a dark mockery of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit respectively.
  • Was Once a Man: According to each of their Codex entries the Moirax used to be a single Valorian named Alaz, who attempted the Rights of Ascension but due to what he did along the way to accomplish this goal, instead of ascending to godhood he was cursed and split into the three who come to be known as the Moirax.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Defied, hard. While they claim they're holding back the Darkness and protecting the Monolith and Aperion from the Archons, every time they appear it's clear they're just abusing their power in the hopes that their existential purpose will allow them to go uncontested.

Other Enemies

    Crimson Wind

Codex Characters

    The Archons
The twelve gods of the setting. They were born from ruins of Kosmera's body. Shortly after their birth, they started warring amongst themselves, which resulted in the creation of the Valorians. They were eventually overthrown and their physical bodies were destroyed by Macros and Orin's army.

  • Abusive Precursors: Even the most benevolent among them saw the Valorians only as instruments of war and used them as such.
  • Physical God: Interestingly enough, they only took physical forms after creating the Valorians. It's believed that the Valorians were not made in their image, but rather the Archons decided to base their physical bodies on Valorians.

    Kosmera, the Creator Dragon
Before there was life on Aperion, there was Kosmera. Legend says that she unintentionally brought the Archons into existence by devouring herself in a desperate attempt to satisfy her hunger.

  • The Old Gods: Predating the Archons puts her in this category.

    Zwei
A Valorian scholar who sought to understand the Tetrarchy's ways. He and Sati's knowledge and principles would go on to influence Valorian society.
