A narcoleptic 14-year-old boy is the main protagonist.
- All Love Is Unrequited: Tarō seems to have romantic feelings for Miyako.
- Crossdresser: Tarou at one point dresses up as a Miko in an attempt to rescue Miyako.
- Dark and Troubled Past: See Organ Theft and Sole Survivor.
- Easy Amnesia: Tarou has this due to head trauma.
- Organ Theft: Taro and Mizuka were kidnapped by a member of a child organ trafficking ring, though circumstances made the kidnapper demand a ransom instead.
- Past Experience Nightmare: A major plot point for Tarou, who records them on a tape recorder.
- Sole Survivor: Tarō and his older sister, Mizuka, were kidnapped 11 years ago, on September 22, 1996. Only Tarō survived the incident.

- Famous Ancestor: Makoto's family founded a religion of which his elderly grandmother, Himeko, currently serves as the central point.
- Hates Their Parent: He hates his mom for having left him.
- Hair-Trigger Temper: He's brooding and hot-tempered.
- Jerkass: May or not have a Hidden Heart of Gold, and is certainly a Jerkass Woobie.
- Meaningful Name: Makoto's name is spelled with the kanji 信, which means something like "faith", "honesty", and "trust".
- Parental Abandonment: His mother abandoned him. He later meets up with her again finding out she has remarried.
- Parental Issues: His father committed suicide and his mother suffers from deep depression and attempted to commit suicide by overdosing on pills and maybe even burning her house.

Recently transferred to Tarō and Makoto's school from Tokyo.- Face Your Fears: He has tried standing on the edge of the school roof, to cure his fear of heights.
- Generation Xerox: Masayuki and his dad both fall for Outori. The boys vow, however, not to drift apart and stay friends, unlike their parents.
- Meaningful Name: Masayuki's name is spelled with the kanji 匡幸, the first kanji meaning something like "to save", "to correct", or "assist" and the second one meaning "happiness".
- New Transfer Student
- No Sense of Personal Space: Masayuki does not seem to understand that flinging an arm around someone you just met and hanging off them while speaking directly into their face might come off as a bit weird.
- No Social Skills: Masayuki simply does not know the meaning of the word 'tact.'
- Primal Fear: He's afraid of heights. This comes from a time when he bullied someone to suicide by jumping off the school roof.
- The Atoner: Since he bullied someone to suicide by jumping off the school roof, and the victim left a message on the blackboard cursing Masayuki. He later decides to intervene in the bullying of one of his classmates.

A mysterious young girl with the ability to see ghosts.- All of the Other Reindeer: After it's shown that she's possessed by spirits, everyone in her class starts to avoid her.
- I See Dead People: She has the ability to see ghosts.

- Miko: She lives at a shrine.
- Oracular Urchin
- Silent Treatment: When Taro told her that she might be the reincarnation of his sister, she gets very upset and starts ignoring Taro as if she'd never known him.
- Split Personality: Sort of.
- Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Miyako looks eerily similar to Mizuka, which eventually leads Taro to believe that she's her reincarnation.
- Wise Beyond Their Years: She acts rather mature for her age, often chiding the older boys for acting childish, and even scolding her father when he attempts to drink too much.
