A narcoleptic 14-year-old boy is the main protagonist.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Tarō seems to have romantic feelings for Miyako.
  • Crossdresser: Tarou at one point dresses up as a Miko in an attempt to rescue Miyako.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: See Organ Theft and Sole Survivor.
  • Easy Amnesia: Tarou has this due to head trauma.
  • Organ Theft: Taro and Mizuka were kidnapped by a member of a child organ trafficking ring, though circumstances made the kidnapper demand a ransom instead.

  • Face Your Fears: He has tried standing on the edge of the school roof, to cure his fear of heights.
  • Generation Xerox: Masayuki and his dad both fall for Outori. The boys vow, however, not to drift apart and stay friends, unlike their parents.
  • Meaningful Name: Masayuki's name is spelled with the kanji 匡幸, the first kanji meaning something like "to save", "to correct", or "assist" and the second one meaning "happiness".
  • New Transfer Student
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Masayuki does not seem to understand that flinging an arm around someone you just met and hanging off them while speaking directly into their face might come off as a bit weird.
  • No Social Skills: Masayuki simply does not know the meaning of the word 'tact.'
  • Primal Fear: He's afraid of heights. This comes from a time when he bullied someone to suicide by jumping off the school roof.
  • The Atoner: Since he bullied someone to suicide by jumping off the school roof, and the victim left a message on the blackboard cursing Masayuki. He later decides to intervene in the bullying of one of his classmates.
  • The Bully: Formerly.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Starts out as this until they eventually warm up to him.
  • True Companions: By the end with Makoto and Tarou.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: He eventually develops the ability to evoke the same weaponry from his virtual reality video game in his spirit form.
