Main Characters
Bai Ping Ting
- Played by: Angelababy
A military strategist. At the start of the series she works for He Xia. She eventually falls in love with Chu Bei Jie.
- Awesome Moment of Crowning: She and Chu Bei Jie get one in the final episode.
- Battle Couple: With Chu Bei Jie. They plan together, fight together, and eventually rule together.
- Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Even when seriously injured she rarely looks worse than slightly dishevelled.
- The Big Damn Kiss: Between her and Chu Bei Jie in episode thirteen.
- Childhood Friend Romance: She met Chu Bei Jie when they were both children. Years later they fall in love.
- Dating Catwoman: With Chu Bei Jie. The two of them are on opposite sides of a war and frequently fight against each other. This doesn't stop them falling in love and getting married.
- Death Faked for You: Sima Hong fakes her death so he can hand her over to the King of Yan.
- Lady of War: She's rarely seen in anything but long, flowing dresses. Doesn't stop her fighting when she needs to.
- Missed Him by That Much: She and Chu Bei Jie would have been reunited much sooner if they'd looked in the right direction at the right moment.
- My Secret Pregnancy: She has to hide her pregnancy while a prisoner in Bai Lan because it would put her and her child's life in danger if it was found out.
- Reports of My Death Were Greatly Exaggerated: Yang Feng and Ze Yin think she's dead and have a funeral and a memorial made for her. Unknown to them or Chu Bei Jie, she's still alive.
- Sweet Polly Oliver: She disguises herself as a man to sneak into Jiao Yan Casino.
- We Used to Be Friends: She and He Xia are good friends at the start of the series. Within a few episodes they become enemies.
- Xanatos Speed Chess: She excels at it. For added points she's usually playing it against Chu Bei Jie, who's just as good at it as she is.
Chu Bei Jie
- Played by: Wallace Chung
Jin Kingdom's best general. Fell in love with Bai Ping Ting when they were both children and marries her when he meets her twenty years later.
- Awesome Moment of Crowning: He and Bai Ping Ting get one in the final episode.
- Battle Couple: With Bai Ping Ting. They plan together, fight together, and eventually rule together.
- Better Manhandle the Murder Weapon: He finds several corpses and a bloody sword. Instead of doing the sensible thing and staying as far away as possible, he picks up the sword and promptly gets mistaken for the murderer.
- The Big Damn Kiss: Between him and Bai Ping Ting in episode thirteen.
- Childhood Friend Romance: He met Bai Ping Ting as a child.
- Combat Hand Fan: Uses a fan as a weapon in one of his fights with He Xia.
- Dating Catwoman: Bai Ping Ting is on the other side of the war. Chu Bei Jie falls in love with her anyway.
- Heroic Bastard: He's Sima Hong's illegitimate half-brother.

He Xia
- Played by: Sun Yi Zhou
A prince of Yan. Wants revenge because his family were betrayed. Marries Yao Tian to gain power and influence in Bai Lan.
- All Love Is Unrequited: He loves Bai Ping Ting, who doesn't love him. Then he marries Yao Tian, who does love him, but he doesn't return her love until it's too late.
- Cassandra Truth: Insists the King of Yan is conspiring against him with Chu Bei Jie. It's true, but everyone thinks he's imagining it.
- Disney Villain Death / Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: He gets pushed off a tower... and lands on a spear.
- Marriage Before Romance: He marries Yao Tian for her position and to get a foothold in Bai Lan. Much later he realises he's in love with her. Unfortunately by that time he's ruined her life and kingdom, driven her to suicide, and he's about to die too.
- Romantic False Lead: He asks Bai Ping Ting to marry him early in the series. Obviously the marriage never happens.
- We Used to Be Friends: He was Bai Ping Ting's friend at first. Before long they grow further and further apart until they become enemies.
Yao Tian
- Played by: Gan Ting Ting
Princess of Bai Lan and He Xia's wife.
- Driven to Suicide: She poisons herself after He Xia seizes her throne.
- Imperiled in Pregnancy: Taken to tragic extremes when she commits suicide while pregnant.
- Love Martyr: She knows He Xia is just using her. Yet she puts up with everything he does, including his kidnapping Bai Ping Ting, because she loves him. It ends with her committing suicide for his sake.
- Love Ruins the Realm: Her love for He Xia leads to her own death and the downfall of her kingdom.
Jin Kingdom
Sima Hong
- Played by: Yu Bo
Emperor of Jin and Chu Bei Jie's half-brother.
- Arranged Marriage: His marriage to Consort Zhang was arranged by her father.
- Because You Were Nice to Me: He makes Shuang Er his new empress because she was the only person who remained loyal to him.
- Cain and Abel: Chu Bei Jie is his half-brother. That doesn't stop Sima Hong torturing him.
- Death Faked for You: He fakes Bai Ping Ting's death so he can hand her over to the King of Yan.
- Historical Domain Character: He's very loosely based on Emperor Xiao Wu
. - Outliving One's Offspring: He and his empress outlive their two sons, who were murdered by He Xia.
- Viking Funeral: Chu Bei Jie puts his body on a raft and sets it on fire with a burning arrow.
Consort Zhang
- Played by: Deng Sha
Sima Hong's concubine. She hates her husband and is in love with Chu Bei Jie. When he rejects her she sets out to ruin his life as well as Sima Hong's.
- Anguished Declaration of Love: Gives one to Chu Bei Jie. It doesn't work.
- Arranged Marriage: Her father arranged her marriage to Sima Hong.
- Driven to Suicide: She hangs herself after her plans are exposed.
- Fake Pregnancy: She pretends to be pregnant in the hope Sima Hong will make her his new empress.
- Historical Domain Character: She's a fictionalised version of Honoured Lady Zhang.
- Laughing Mad: She bursts out laughing as she describes how she killed the empress.
- Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Cuts her own arms then pretends Chu Bei Jie attacked her.
Chancellor Zhang
- Played by: Cheng Hao Feng
Consort Zhang's father. He arranged his daughter's marriage in an attempt to seize the throne.
- Driven to Suicide: Kills himself after his plans fail.
- Evil Chancellor: He's only interested in gaining power for himself.
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Played with. He's a treacherous plotter who forced his daughter to marry Sima Hong, but at the same time he does care for her. He's clearly devastated when she refuses to escape the palace after his plans go wrong.
Shuang Er
- Played by: Lu Qing
A palace maid who stayed loyal to Sima Hong when he was a prisoner. She becomes his second empress after he regains the throne.
- Because You Were Nice to Me: She was kind to Sima Hong during his imprisonment. He repays her by marrying her later.
- Historical Domain Character: She's loosely based on Consort Chen Guinü.
- Rags to Royalty: She goes from being a maid to being Empress of Jin.
Chu Mo Ran
- Played by: Wei Bing Hua
Chu Bei Jie's trusted lieutenant. In love with Zui Ju.
- All Love Is Unrequited: He loves Zui Ju. At first she loves Chu Bei Jie, then falls in love with Fan Lu.
Zui Ju
- Played by: Zou Yang
A healer who saves Bai Ping Ting.
- Accidental Kidnapping: Played with. Fan Lu meant to kidnap Bai Ping Ting, but kidnapped Zui Ju by mistake.
- A Match Made in Stockholm: She first meets Fan Lu when he kidnaps her. After much grumbling and bickering, the two of them eventually fall in love.
Liang Kingdom
Yang Feng
- Played by: Madina Memet
Bai Ping Ting's childhood friend.
- Interrupted Suicide: She tries to hang herself. Bai Ping Ting arrives just in time to stop her.
Ze Yin
- Played by: Qi Hang
Yang Feng's husband and one of Liang's generals.
Thirteenth Lady Yan
- Played by: Liu Meng Meng
Owner of Jiao Yan Casino.
- All Love Is Unrequited: She's in love with Chu Bei Jie, who's in love with Bai Ping Ting.
- Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: Fights a group of soldiers while wearing a long dress.
- You Are Number 6: She's always called "Lady Thirteen". Her real name isn't revealed.
Yan Kingdom
Dong Zhuo
- Played by: Hu Wen Zuo
Bai Ping Ting and He Xia's childhood friend.
- Undying Loyalty: For He Xia. Even after an argument with him, Dong Zhou gets ready to go with him on a dangerous mission without even being asked.
