Main Party

    Slade
The hero of the game. He was an ordinary swordsman until he encountered Shadar in his village and learned of his plans.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: He and Rhea fight a lot in the beginning, but they grow close enough to each other that they get married off-screen between the first and second games.
  • The Chosen One: As the reincarnartion of Khan, he is chosen to save the world from the various forces threatening it.
  • Death Seeker: In Phantom Legacy, he decides not to tell the truth about the Frame-Up of the Ragan Castle massacre so the new heroes can kill him.
  • Frame-Up: In Phantom Legacy, he is framed for the massacre at Ragan Castle by Malakai, keeping quiet because he wants the heroes to kill him.

    Rhea
A girl who fights with Slade a lot.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: She and Slade fight a lot in the beginning, but they grow close enough to each other that they get married off-screen between the first and second games.
  • Fiery Redhead: Is a redhead and quite the Tsundere to Slade, as well as rude and snippy in general. She mellows out as the story goes on.
  • The Quiet One: For some reason, she never speaks in her appearances in Phantom Legacy, despite talking in the original.
  • Tsundere: To Slade. She gets into squabbles with him, especially at the beginning, but she grows to love him and marries him eventually.

    Sharn
A mercenary hired by Shadar to kill Slade and Rhea. After an incident in which he and Slade are forced to stick together, he becomes an uneasy ally.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Initially, he is a mercenary sent to hunt Slade and Rhea, and is the second boss of the game. He then goes on to become a close ally and The Lancer to Slade.

    Iris
A golem created by Deimos who is sent by him to help the party defeat Shadar.
  • Literal-Minded: When Sharn says that Abel had his head up his ass, Iris asks if such a thing is even possible.

    Orion
A creation of Deimos built to resemble Shadar.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: Both fights against Orion cannot be won, as he is powerful enough to slaughter your party in a manner of minutes.
  • Taking You with Me: He does a heroic version of this when he unleashes his full power, knowing it will kill him, to bring Deimos down for good.
  • You Kill It, You Bought It: After Orion makes a Heroic Sacrifice to kill Deimos, the Wheel of Reincarnation, he himself becomes the new wheel.

Shadar's Forces

    Shadar the Malevolent Shadow (spoilers)
A mysterious being that is killing people around the world and desires to restore "balance" by solving the overpopulation crisis and overthrowing the cruel gods.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: In a sense. His ultimate goals were to destroy the tyrannical gods- which Slade accomplished for him at the end of Demon Legacy- and to defeat Malakai, achieve godhood, destroy the Ether Vein, and bring balance to the world- all of which he accomplishes thanks to Nero in Phantom Legacy. He also gives up on his culling of the population because it is no longer necessary, since the world has achieved balance.
  • Big Bad: Of the duology as a whole, as he seeks to kill hundreds and become the god of the world so he may balance it. He has competition in both games, but always comes out on top.
  • Big Bad Ensemble:
    • In Demon Legacy, he is responsible for killing hundreds of people and seeks to become the god of the world in order to bring balance to the world and stop the tyranny of the gods, mainly Deimos, Apollo, and the evil Proteus.
    • In Phantom Legacy, he competes with Malakai to become the god of the world.
  • The Chessmaster: He sets up the events of the entire series, steering his enemies where they need to go, to achieve his goals of godhood and world balance.
  • The Determinator: He will stop at nothing to become a god and ensure world balance is achieved, and braves through two whole games and many opponents to reach his goal. Even when balance is achieved in a different way, he still plans to continue causing trouble somewhere down the line.
  • The Dreaded: He is so heavily feared worldwide in both stories for having killed many hundreds of people in his quest to return balance, and the mere mention of his name is enough to chill the very soul of most people.
  • Enemy Mine: He allies with Slade halfway through the game to defeat Deimos, Apollo, and Proteus, their mutual enemies, though he also cuts the alliance off once Deimos and Apollo are dead.
  • Fallen Hero: He was once the heroic Prince Galahanzer who sought to protect humanity from the gods. Then he learned the truth- that humanity abused and abandoned their gods- he was driven to despair. Though he still ultimately wants to protect humanity by overthrowing the gods, he is much more ruthless as Shadar and wants to kill millions because he feels overpopulation is contributing to the world's unbalance.
  • Godhood Seeker: In both games, he desires to become the only god of the world, believing he can bring back balance and peace.
  • Grim Reaper: Has this appearance minus the skeleton, and fancies himself one, going around killing people to solve overpopulation.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: The first battle against Shadar cannot be won- at that level, Slade's attacks can only do 1 or 2 damage. Shadar initially refrains from attacking before using a spell to end it.
  • Last Plan Standing: In Phantom Legacy, after already having defeated Deimos and Apollo and let the heroes take down Proteus, he outwits Malakai thanks to Nero and becomes the Final Boss.
  • Karma Houdini: By the end of the sequel, while he has given up on his plans to cull the human population, he cannot be beaten because he and Nero are at equal power, so he gets away with all his mass-murder and manipulation.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: In the final battle of Phantom Legacy, once Nero becomes a being as powerful as he is and their battle reaches a stalemate, he concedes because balance has been achieved. Though he notes in The Stinger that he is waiting to eventually return and enact his plans once again.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He manipulates Slade and his party into allying with him to fight the gods, acting as a Big Good of sorts, even though he is planning to betray them and has already killed hundreds. He also uses Nero in the sequel to accomplish his goals.
  • Out-Gambitted: Proteus manages to get the drop on him, having waited until Shadar and all his other enemies obliterated each other to attack Shadar and put his own plan to destroy the world in motion. Being Shadar, though, he recovers from this setback after Proteus is defeated and goes on to have the Last Plan Standing in Phantom Legacy.
  • Sole Survivor: Prince Galahanzer is revealed to have been the only survivor of the Firebrand-possessed Khan's mass-murder.
  • Twinkle in the Eye: As Prince Galahanzer, in a flashback, he gets one when he is about to unleash the full power of the Firebrand and become Shadar.
  • The Worf Effect: He is The Chessmaster and a Manipulative Bastard who plays almost everyone around him like a fiddle, which makes it all the more impressive for Proteus when Shadar is briefly Out-Gambitted by him.

Deimos' Forces

    Arch Duke Deimos (spoilers)

The Wheel Of Reincarnation

The ruler of the human world and one of the four primary antagonists of the game. He is the being who oversees and controls the re-incarnation cycle. He manipulated humanity into rebelling against the Demi-Gods and Proteus so he could become their new ruler. He also took on a human form.

  • Abusive Parents: He is shown to be an absolutely awful parent to his golem creations. Because he sees them as nothing more than tools, he never gives them genuine love or affection, or even teaches them how to take care of themselves- Iris, his daughter, is completely ignorant of the human world and does not even know how to eat or socialize. He is also willing to harm his golems for failing him, disagreeing with him, or just because he is in a bad mood. Even their deaths are but an inconvenience to him.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: Arch Duke Deimos is one of the major villains of the game and a despicable tyrant and Mad Scientist.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: With Shadar, the evil Proteus, and Apollo. He is the Mad Scientist current ruler of the human world who wants to eliminate all threats to his rule, and is the Wheel of Reincarnation who created humanity and turned them against the other gods in the first place.
  • Climax Boss: Deimos is a major antagonist who is built up for much of the game, and he is fought at the end of the third quarter, after a long trek through his castle, with difficult enemies and bosses in between. After being defeated the first time, he even reveals his powerful true form, and he turns out to be a god himself. Yet, despite seeming everything like a Final Boss, the player knows that they will have to fight the Demi-Gods afterwards.
  • Devour the Dragon: In the battle against him, he kills his two Druid helpers to absorb their power.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Deimos eventually kills a golem just for questioning him.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Deimos implanted a device in Orion that would force him to go out of control at his command. Orion uses that same device to unleash his full power and bring Deimos down with him.
  • Lack of Empathy: When Alanna dies in battle, Deimos responds by saying that, because she is a golem and not human, she was merely destroyed. He then kills her sister Fianna and punishes Sarius for being angry about it and betraying him by shattering his mind and soul.
  • Load-Bearing Boss: When he is finally killed, his castle begins sinking, requiring the heroes to flee the castle in 8 minutes.
  • Mad Scientist: He creates his golems out of corpses, implants a device in Orion to force him to kill people, and tries to stuff his daughter Iris with power to defeat the Demi-Gods.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: After being killed, his spirit decides he would rather destroy the world than allow anyone else to rule it, so he has Abel Driven to Madness and sends him to do the job.
  • Plague Doctor: His outfit resembles a purple one with a bird mask, covering his whole body. The outfit seems to indicate him being a Mad Scientist, and it is possible he wears the outfit to disguise his divinity.
  • Villainous Rescue: After the Hopeless Boss Fight against Shadar, and just before he is about to kill Slade, he arrives and drives him off.
  • Walking Spoiler: Due to his true nature as the Wheel of Reincarnation and role in turning humanity against the Demi-Gods.
  • Taking You with Me: Tries to do this to the entire world- after he is killed, he drives Abel to insanity and sends him to destroy the world as revenge for Slade beating him- if he cannot rule the world, he wants to make sure no one else can.
  • This Cannot Be!: When Shadar informs Deimos that he killed Durandal:
Deimos: NO! It can't be! He was one of my most powerful creations...

    Sarius
A wolf-man and the most trusted servant of Deimos.
  • Disguised in Drag: When he first encounters Slade, Sarius disguises himself as Marietta, the famous singer.

Proteus and the Demi-Gods

    General
The gods who once ruled over the world. Proteus created the Demi-Gods to serve as protectors of his utopia. But Apollo rebelled, starting a civil war among the gods that led to Deimos overthrowing them all. But they have returned and seek revenge.
  • Jerkass Gods: The Demi-Gods are mass-murderers seeking to take revenge on the world for mistreating them.
  • Made of Evil: Proteus' evil half is made of the vengeful side of Proteus who wants to get back on his children for betraying him, while the Demi-Gods are made of the latent negative traits of mankind. Despite this, however, they were created as protectors of humanity, and Khan chooses to keep his role even after the others have abandoned it, while Loki only follows Apollo because he thinks opposing Apollo is futile.
  • Then Let Me Be Evil: They were originally benevolent protectors of humanity, but when humans turned on them and treated them as evil, casting them away, they turned on their children.

    Proteus
The god of the world.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: With Shadar, Deimos, and Apollo. He is the original god who, after being driven mad by the betrayal of Apollo and Deimos, seeks to devour the entire world.
  • Fallen Hero: He was once an example of God Is Good, but when his creations betrayed and forgot him, and split him in half, the evil half decided to wipe them out.
  • God Is Evil: Though an unusual Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds variant. He created the Demi-Gods and loved them as well as humanity, but was betrayed by them and split into a good and evil half by Apollo, who sealed the evil half in the Firebrand sword. Because of this, he sought vengeance on those who cast him away, and wants to devour the world.
  • Made of Evil: His evil half is made of the rage and hatred towards humanity and the Demi-Gods for betraying him.
  • Mad God: As a result of Apollo splitting him in half, his evil side became so consumed with his hatred for his children that he decided to destroy everything.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He preys on Rhea's insecurities to mold her into a warrior worthy of joining Slade and taking out his rivals for him.
  • Wins by Doing Absolutely Nothing: He manages to out-gambit even Shadar simply by sitting back and letting his enemies take care of each other for him.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Once Rhea has helped Slade defeat his rivals, he tries to destroy her along with the rest of her party, since they stand in the way of his goal to destroy everything.

    Apollo of the Absolute Will
The leader of the Demi-Gods, created from the utopia's latent malice. Though intended to serve as a protector, he believed he was superior to humans and wanted to kill them all, rousing his siblings to his cause and rebelling against Proteus. He is one of the four primary antagonists of the game.
  • Antagonistic Offspring: He rebelled against Proteus and split him in half because he disapproved of his hatred toward humanity.
  • Bad Boss: He abuses his siblings whenever they disobey his orders or disappoint him in some way- for example, he sends Arianna to massacre a town full of innocents, then tortures her for taking too long.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: With Shadar, the evil Proteus, and Deimos. He is the leader of the Demi-Gods who aims to Kill All Humans and establish a 'utopia' with him as the ruler of a new, perfect race.
  • Kill All Humans: His ultimate goal is to destroy humanity and power his "utopia" with their souls because he considers them imperfect beings.
  • Made of Evil: He was created from the latent malice of Proteus' utopia. Note that his siblings were also made from humanity's evil, yet none of them are as evil as he is, and Orion notes even he is not beyond redemption, meaning his evil was fully his own choice.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He preys on the abuse his siblings and Abel were put through to convince them to help him Kill All Humans. It doesn't work on Kahn or Loki, but works wonders on the others.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: He claims that his plan to Kill All Humans will create a world where he and his siblings can live in peace and be free from the humans' persecution. Not only is he unnecessarily cruel in pursuit of his goal, but he regularly abuses his siblings and tries to kill one, Kahn, for opposing him. His real motive is that he is The Perfectionist and considers himself superior to humanity.
  • Out-Gambitted: Ultimately, Deimos gets the drop on him by sending Abel to kill him.
  • The Perfectionist: He believes himself to be perfect and wants to Kill All Humans because he sees them as imperfect failures.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Among the Demi-Gods, he is the only one portrayed fully unsympathetically, as his bloodthirstiness goes beyond retribution and into spiteful cruelty- and for how much he supposedly cares about his also-abused siblings, he treats them like pawns and abuses them when they disappoint him.
  • Satanic Archetype: Apollo is a son of Proteus, the local God equivalent, who is beautiful and has a name associated with light (in this case, the Greek sun god), but rebelled against his father because he thought himself superior to humanity. He plays the role of tempter to his siblings, convincing them to join his rebellion, and desires to Kill All Humans both to spite his creator and because he despises humans for being "beneath" him.
  • Slavery Is a Special Kind of Evil: It turns out that Apollo keeps the souls of humans that he and the other Demi-Gods have killed and enslaves them, keeping them in a state where they cannot even speak.
  • The Unfought: He only fights you in a Hopeless Boss Fight just before the final dungeon- when you actually reach him in said dungeon, Abel has killed him for you.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: He has white hair and even looks like Sephiroth, and is the local Satanic Archetype and leader of the Demi-Gods who wants to Kill All Humans, making him one of the two evilest characters in the game (the other being Deimos).

    Loki of the Dark Hand
A Demi-God created from the world's missing violence. Despite being the incarnation of war and fighting, he is a peaceful man who does not desire bloodshed, only following Apollo because he believes he cannot stand up to such a powerful man.
  • The Fatalist: He joins Apollo's anti-humanity crusade reluctantly, mainly because he believes that opposing Apollo is futile and no one is strong enough to defeat him. Subverted when the heroes prove him wrong by defeating him, after which he lends them his full support.
  • Heel–Face Turn: For a given value of heel, he goes from begrudgingly helping Apollo to supporting the heroes' efforts to defeat him when they best Loki in combat.
  • Hero Antagonist: His worst crime is helping Apollo and fighting the heroes, and only because he doesn't think anyone can stand up to Apollo.
  • Made of Evil: He was created from the world's missing violence, though is ironically the least violent of Apollo's followers.
  • Take Up My Sword: After the party defeats him, he can no longer find the strength to stand as he lays dying after the fight, and instead he entrusts his large sword to Slade, being the most powerful weapon Slade can wield, albeit with quite a negative cost on other stats.
  • Token Good Teammate: He is the least violent of Apollo's followers and the only one who doesn't do anything other than fight the heroes. While he sympathizes with his siblings, he disagrees with Apollo's plan to Kill All Humans, serving him only because Loki believes no one can stop Apollo.

    Arianna of the Burning Eyes
A Demi-Goddess created from mankind's repressed lust. Although once a friendly being and benevolent protector, she turned against humanity when they abused and antagonized her.
  • Ax-Crazy: She is shown to enjoy bloodshed and happily massacres a bunch of humans at a castle.
  • Dark Action Girl: The one Demi-Goddess and an Ax-Crazy killer.
  • Made of Evil: She was created from mankind's repressed lust.
  • The Smurfette Principle: The only Demi-Goddess in the pantheon.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: She used to be a kind woman, as flashbacks show, but the humans' abuse of her turned her against them, and it is indicated that her brother Apollo's abuse played a role in breaking her mind and turning her Ax-Crazy.

    Odin of the Searing Light
A Demi-God created from mankind's stray avarice. He was once a protector of humans like the rest of them, but turned against humans for their abuse and evil, though he still retains his honorable self.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: The first fight against Odin. Apollo interrupts him before he gets a chance to attack.
  • Made of Evil: He was created from mankind's stray avarice.

Kahn of the Thunderous Fist (spoilers)
A Demi-God created from mankind's bewilderment. Unlike the others, he openly opposed Apollo's rebellion, believing that humans were still innately good. He was reincarnated as Slade.
  • Made of Evil: He was created from mankind's bewilderment. Despite this, he is a protector of humanity and vows to keep being so long after the others abandoned that job.
