    Ryo

Ryo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/scarecrow_ryo_sprite.png

The game's protagonist and player character, a scarecrow boy who helps his father prepare for the harvest festival. He wants a mom and so takes a liking to Venna when meeting her after wandering into the forest to find mushrooms for his dad.

  • Animate Inanimate Object: He's a living scarecrow brought to life by his father's magic.
  • Ascended Extra: Originally one of Necrotary's friends in Tricks N Treats, here he is the protagonist.
  • Blue Is Heroic: He sports blueish overalls in his human form and is the main hero.
  • Cheerful Child: He's a rather cheerful kid.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: In his scarecrow form, he has black skin and clothing and glowing yellow eyes, but he's every bit the Nice Guy he always is.
  • Fatal Flaw: His naïveté. He really wants to believe that Venna is a good witch and mother who loves him, disregarding all evidence to the contrary. In the first bad ending, this leads to him unknowingly helping Venna massacre everyone in Blackwood, and in the second bad end and good end, it almost gets him killed. He only develops as a character when he lets go of his delusion and realizes Venna really is as evil as everyone says.
  • Momma's Boy: He takes quite a liking to Venna, his secret adoptive mom, due to not having a mom (his dad is a Truly Single Parent). This leaves him vulnerable to her manipulation.
  • Nice Guy: He's affable and kind-hearted.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: In the first bad end, all he wanted was to help his dad and make the harvest festival better than ever, which leads to him pouring a strange potion Venna made into the chalice in the town square that ends up killing everyone.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: He inverts this. He sports a red scarf in both his forms and, as a human, he has black hair and a red hat decoration. In his scarecrow form, he also has black clothing and has darker skin. However, he's consistently a sweetheart.
  • Red Is Heroic: He's the game's main hero who sports a red scarf and, in his human form, a red hat decoration.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Looks like a younger version of Rune. Justified, since Rune modeled him after himself.
  • Unwitting Pawn: In one bad ending, Venna tricks him into pouring a potion in the town statue that kills everyone in town, allowing for her "friends" to feed.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: He believes that Venna is a Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold and all she needs is a little love to come out of her shell. Sadly for him, he's being used by her to massacre everyone in the town.

    Dad/Rune
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dad_sprite_crowscare.png

Ryo's father. He is a mage of some sort who created his son out of straw, magic, and a lock of his hair. He reappears in Blackout Hospital as the director of Altobuck Hospital.

  • Big Good: In both Crowscare and Blackout Hospital, he is the benevolent mage/hospital director trying to protect Ryo and Mary from Venna and Reginald.
  • Chick Magnet / Dude Magnet: In Blackout Hospital, Vasilis notes he's attractive and rather popular with the hospital staff. Though he's not interested.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He is a pale white, powerful mage who can sprout disturbing Combat Tentacles from the hole where his right eye used to be, but he's the Big Good of two separate games who wants to protect the people under his care, whether they be his son or the patients in his hospital.
  • Eyes Always Shut: In Crowscare, with the exception of an early point where he's offended at Ryo jokingly calling him an evil witch, and in the second ending where he sees Ryo being attacked by Venna, he always has his eyes shut. Averted in Blackout Hospital where his left eye is always open and his (nonexistent) right eye obscured by his hair.
  • Good Parents: He loves his son Ryo and does his best to take care of him.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: He becomes the fourth party member in Blackout Hospital, but only joins you for a few rooms before leaving.
  • Handicapped Badass: Has no legs, but can still use his powers to float around and is a very competent magician.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: His right eye is always covered by his hair. It turns out in Blackout Hospital that this is to hide the fact that his right eye has been replaced with a big hole from which he can spout Combat Tentacles.
  • Papa Wolf: In the second ending, he fights off Venna when she tries to kill Ryo and promises to use his magic to make The Night That Never Ends so that Ryo will not turn human and die of his wounds.
  • Truly Single Parent: He made Ryo from a normal scarecrow. Ryo's lack of a mother leaves him feeling a void of sorts in his life.
  • Unnamed Parent: He is only called Dad in Crowscare and he's Ryo's father. Blackout Hospital establishes his name is Rune.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: In Blackout Hospital, he learned that one of his doctors, Dr. Tetra, was trying to kill his own patient Mary, so he cast a time freezing spell to get enough time to do some investigation. Unfortunately, he botched the spell and turned the hospital and the outside world into one where spirits run loose, trapping him and the others inside.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: In the second bad end, he decides to use his powers to create The Night That Never Ends so that his injured scarecrow son Ryo will not turn back into a human and die of his wounds.

    The Crow (Unmarked Spoilers)

Ingram

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ingram_sprite.png

Look kid. I'm trying to help you. ...Something bad is coming.

A talking crow who repeatedly appears to speak to Ryo and warn him against going into the forest. He is actually the son of Venna, Ingram, turned into a crow for disobeying her.

  • Big Damn Heroes: In the true ending, when Venna is about to kill Ryo, Ingram shows up and holds her off so he can escape.
  • Brutal Honesty: He has no issue with speaking his mind around Ryo.
  • The Cameo: Appears in a picture at Rune's room in Blackout Hospital. He still has his Glasgow Grin, implying that the events of Crowscare happened in that timeline as well.
  • Cassandra Truth: Keeps trying to warn Ryo about how dangerous Venna is, but it always goes on deaf ears.
  • Forced Transformation: He was originally of the same species as Venna, but was turned into a crow as punishment for disobedience.
  • Glasgow Grin: A non-villainous example. In the true ending, Venna carves a bloody smile into him while trying to kill him in the finale. He does get it stitched up later, though.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He is very blunt and often harsh to Ryo when telling him to stay away from the woods and Venna, but only because he genuinely wants to protect Ryo from an evil, manipulative witch.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Like his mother (Venna), he is a humanoid crow. Though he spends most of the game in bird form thanks to being cursed by his mother for disobedience.
  • Matricide: In the true end, he kills his abusive mother Venna in defense of Ryo.
  • Talking Animal: A talking crow. According to Ryo, he's far from the first he's met.
    Ryo: BOO!
Crow: You don't scare me, kid.
    Ryo: Whoaaaa—you can talk!
    Crow: Yeah... what about it?
Ryo: Oh, no, nothing! I've met plenty of talking birds before! I just...
  • Two Aliases, One Character: The taking crow, Venna's son, and Ingram are all the same individual.
  • Walking Spoiler: Saying too much about him will give away his true identity.
  • Would Hit a Girl: "Hit" is an understatement; he kills Venna (his Abusive Mom) off-screen in the true ending. While done in defense of Ryo, it is depicted as creepy.

    Venna

Venna

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/venna_sprite.png

I'm Venna, but... ...you can call me "Mom."

The witch who lives in the woods. Though considered malevolent by the townspeople, she becomes a mother figure to Ryo, helping him prepare for the festival as long as he keeps his visits a secret from the fearful villagers.

  • Abusive Mom: She mistreated Ingram, her son, in the past and outright turned him into a crow when he refused to help her kill innocent people.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: In the Bad Ending 1, Blood Moon Festival, she succeeds in killing all the village's residents.
  • Bait the Dog: She's set up to be a Good Parent and a Nice Girl, but the endings show she's anything but.
  • Big Bad: She turns out to be plotting to kill the villagers and is manipulating the protagonist Ryo into sabotaging the Harvest Festival so she and her "friends" can eat them.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She is extremely good at appearing as a loving mother instead of the Wicked Witch she truly is- Ryo is taken in by the act for nearly the whole game.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality:
  • Clever Crows: She's a cunning crow-witch and a villainous example.
  • Creepy Crows: She is a crow-witch, the Big Bad, and she devours humans.
  • Dark Is Evil: A double subverted example. She has black hair and dresses like a witch...but is a Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold. However, she's eventually revealed to live up to the "Evil" part.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: A subverted example. She has black hair, wears black, and looks like a witch. However, she seems like a Nice Girl... for it later to be revealed she's actually pure evil.
  • Evil All Along: Throughout most of her appearances, she's presented as a Nice Girl. However, all the endings reveal she's actually anything but.
  • Evil Has a Bad Sense of Humor: Type II. In the true ending, she gave Ingrid a Glasgow Grin, which seemed to be done as a gag.
  • Evil Matriarch: She is the Parental Substitute mother of Ryo and biological mother of Ingram, and is only nice to both of them as long as they are useful for her plans. The second they go against her, she tries to kill the former and turned the latter into a crow.
  • Evil Plan: She seeks to kill everyone in the village. It's also implied in the first bad ending she wants to Take Over the World.
  • Evil Wears Black: Double subverted. She wears black and seems like a Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold, but it's later revealed she's pure evil.
  • Fangs Are Evil: A downplayed case. She's evil and vicious alright, and a shot of her during the first bad ending shows she has fangs. However, they're not very noticeable.
  • Good Parents: A subversion. While she seems like a caring mother, it's all an act.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: In the true ending path, manipulating Ryo into believing she's his mother ends up unwittingly fulfilling the Curse Escape Clause she put on Ingram that required him to consume a part of a family member, which breaks Ingram's curse and finally gives him the chance to kill her.
  • Killed Offscreen: In the true end, the last we see of her is her struggling with Ingram before he returns (with a Glasgow Grin) and informs Ryo that he killed her.
  • Lack of Empathy: Seems to be incapable of comprehend why cannibalizing people would bother other people. She's also baffled when Ingram didn't want to be part of it and only cares that he "betrayed" her.
  • Little Bit Beastly: She is a humanoid crow-witch.
  • Malevolent Masked Woman: She wears a domino mask with a crow beak as part of her witch attire and, despite seeming nice on the surface, is every bit the child-eating Wicked Witch that others say she is.
  • Manipulative Bitch: She puts on the act of a loving mother to manipulate her children into helping her secure victims.
  • Master Actress: She tricks Ryo (and, according to Ingram, many other kids) into believing she's a sweetheart.
  • Messy Hair: Her hair is fairly messy, as befitting a reclusive witch.
  • Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold: Invoked and Subverted. She initially seems to be this- a lonely but kind and motherly witch who lives alone in the woods, with all sorts of nasty rumors made about her being a scary man-eating witch by the paranoid townspeople of Blackwood. In truth, she makes herself look like this to manipulate Ryo into becoming her Unwitting Pawn in her plot to kill the Blackwood citizens.
  • Offing the Offspring: She attempts to kill both her adoptive child Ryo and biological child Ingram for getting in the way of her murderous plans.
  • One Bad Mother: Sorta. "Mother" isn't in her title, but Ryo calls her "Mom". She's also the game's villainess.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: The first time she meets Ryo, she spares him and helps him go back home. But the crow explains that this is because he is made of hay, and she only eats beings of flesh and blood. And when she starts being nice to him and acting as his mother, it's only to manipulate him into carrying out her plans that she cannot do herself.
  • Red Is Violent: Sorta. She concocts a red potion and she's a Child Eater who, in most endings, tries to kill her own children.
  • Serial Killer: Of anyone who wanders into her woods. According to the notes by Ingram, she has a lot of victims.
  • Take Over the World: Implied in Blood Moon Festival (the Bad Ending 1). After she succeeds with her Evil Plan of killing off the village, she tells Ryo that she'll "be the queen of this world!" and it'll make him her "little prince".
  • To Serve Man: She eats people who wander into her forest and plans on turning all of Blackwood into a feast for her and her friends.
  • Viler New Villain: Of the previous villains, the Monster only has a few victims and is hinted to be an Enemy Within for Embry, the Blackwood Butcher/Reginald Tetra is Affably Evil despite being a Serial Killer, and Twila Sophio has a sense of family honor. Venna, by contrast, is a monstrous, child-eating witch who attempts to turn all of Blackwood into a bloodbath to satisfy her craving for flesh and is a Manipulative Bitch too.
  • Walking Spoiler: Good luck discussing her without spoiling she subverts being a Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: If she's around too many scarecrows, she becomes sick.
  • Wicked Witch: Double Subverted. The town legends portray her as an evil, child-eating witch who attacks anyone wandering into her woods. Ryo then meets her and she turns out to be a perfectly friendly and motherly individual... but the legends were right all along and she was just using him to help her find victims.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Even ignoring that she's a Child Eater, she also has zero qualms with killing her own children and it's heavily implied she killed a Red Riding Hood-like girl.
