Covendom of Walpurga

    open/close all folders

    General
  • Benevolent Mage Ruler: The four 'Cardinal Witches' of the ruling Coven and the few rare witch-queens are generally this, with those who are actually evil balanced by their good counterparts. Even Hocus-Pocus, the greatest witch-queen in their history and the only one mentioned so far who is actually and actively villainous, only does her 'Evil Overlady' shtick as a hobby to allieviate her boredom.
  • Flying Broomstick: Flying broomsticks are a common form of travel in Walpurga. The Walpurgan witches and warlocks tried modernizing them in collaboration with Machina... with less-than-satisfactory results.
  • Good Witch Versus Bad Witch: Distinction exists, with many being the former, some being the latter and the rest being in between. Those in the latter are generally balanced out or kept in line by those of the former, even when allowed to exercise their evil as they had under Witch Queen Hocus-Pocus, who despite being a contractual supervillain does not tolerate inexcusable levels of wickedness and unleashes her unbridled wrath upon those who step too far out of line.
  • The Magocracy: The Covendom of Walpurga is a realm ruled by coven of witches, the highest office of which are a quartet symbolizing the cardinal directions, consist of two 'Light Witches' of the North and South and two 'Dark Witches' of the East and West.
  • Oh, Crap!: One unfortunate Walpurgan witch who volunteered to test a prototype Vortex Engine-equipped flying broomstick learned the hard way why outfitting brooms with modern aerial technology was a terrible idea.
Walpurgan Witch: (screaming while going at high speed) OH WINTER OPERA THIS WAS A HORRIBLE IDEA - !!!
  • Our Witches Are Different: In contrast to the more wicked witches, wizards and warlocks found among the likes of Hydianites and others, the ones of the Covendom are generally benevolent or at least non-malicious. Those who are are balanced out by the good ones, made to follow rules or have their flanks kicked by the benevolent ruling and common witches and warlocks.
  • Wicked Witch: Generally subverted. Despite its name and main ruling body and culture, the Covendom is relatively benevolent or at least non-malicious. There are evil witches and warlocks, but they are usually either balanced out by the benevolent ones and, if the witch or warlock in question is too wicked, they would face the wrath of the ruling coven or witch-queen and other good witches and warlocks who oppose them. Even those who worked under Hocus-Pocus had to toe their line to her rules or face her unbridled wrath.

Hocus-Pocus, the Witch Queen of Walpurga

Character: Villainous

Alignment: Lawful Evil

Type: Mage Ruler, Evil Overlady (her own terminology), Witch Queen, Evil Hobbyist, Archmage, Dark Witch, Good Parent

Faction: The Covendom of Walpurga

"Hocus-Pocus! I will turn your town into a circus!"

Queen Hocus-Pocus (her entry here) is a Pony witch-queen of Walpurga during the Third Age, and is both the most powerful and among the most unusual spellcasters in its history.

Born to one of Walpurga's four ruling witches and trained to harness her incredible magical power and potential, Hocus-Pocus would became one of the greatest witch of the Covendom. As a reward for her achievements, she was made the Covendom's supreme witch-queen, and was by all metrics a beloved and capable ruler. However, her overwhelming success and strength meant virtually nothing poses a challenge to her, leaving her listless and miserable with crippling boredom.

This changed one day when Princess 'Cold Heart' of Ponyland, on a diplomatic visit, pointed out that she and the Covendom had all the right stuff, from the aesthetics to her might, to be a Super Villain. Realizing she is right and that facing the heroic forces of the Third Age would give her the challenge and fun she craved, Hocus-Pocus would decide to become a 'contractual' Affably Evil Noble Demon 'Evil Overlady' as a hobby, and go on to become one of the greatest villainous threats faced by the forces of righteousness in the Third Age during her lifetime.
  • The Ace: Was one of the most powerful mortal magic users of the Third Age and the mightiest Witch Queen in Walpurga's storied history. To note, she was compared to the legendary Karaldina De Hex of Griffonnianote  - if the Griffon witch had access to Third Age magics. Deconstructed in that she was so powerful and good as a witch and ruler respectively it left her with crippling boredom and leaving her wishing she was normal or less powerful just so she could have a challenge, and was directly responsible for driving her into becoming a Super Villain.
  • Affably Evil: Emphasis on 'Affably', as she's mostly playing Super Villain as a hobby to allieviate her boredom.
  • Antagonistic Offspring: Has two in the form of her daughters Abra-Ca-Dabra and Pumpkin Tart, who became heroic witches and moved to Third Age Ponyland to face her. She's very proud of them for doing so, especially whenever they manage to defeat her.
  • Back from the Dead: With many of her villainous rivals returning to life and activity in the Fourth Age, many speculate it is only a matter of time before she herself do the same. She would proceed to do so just in time for a Nightmare Night festival some time after the 'New Crypta Conquests' and the 'Shadowpact Reformation'.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: She became an Evil Overlord (Or rather 'Evil Overlady') for fun, but make no mistake, she is an incredibly powerful and dangerous witch queen whom you do not to get on her bad side. She kept all of her villainous witches in her kingdom in line out of fear of her unbridled wrath, and when she got serious she can inflict a Curbstomp Battle on most of her opponents due to her sheer skills, knowledge and power as a witch. She can even take on the likes of rivals like Sekra and Vondur and hold her own.
    • To note, she conquered the entirety of Ponyland with her villainous witches as quite literally the first thing she did as a Super Villain and Evil Overlady.
  • Broken Ace: Her sheer power as a witch and talent as a leader left her with absolutely no challenge, and thus miserable. It isn't until she becomes a supervillain she is happy with her life.
  • Came Back Strong: Having ascended to an Alicorn godling of witchcraft and returned to life in the Fourth Age, she is now capable of posing a threat to even Princess Twilight/Amicitia, the Alicorn princess of Magic and Friendship herself, and held her own against not only Amicitia but an entire army consisting of both Amicitia and the heroes/demigod inhabitants of Ponyville during the Nightmare Night she returned to have fun (in her typical 'contractual supervillainess' ways).
  • Challenge Seeker: Hocus-Pocus's entire reason for becoming a supervillain in the first place: Walpurga held absolutely nothing that could meaningfully challenge her, as all its villains were too weak to stand a chance against her and she was a competent, good ruler able to manage it fairly easily. So she became a supervillain order to find something capable of actually challenging her.
  • Contractual Genre Blindness: Abides to this like many Third Age villains. She justifies this by saying if she was to become a Super Villain, she should go all the way in it, up to and including the plot-mandated genre-blindness. This gives heroes a chance to defeat her as she is FAR more dangerous when she gets serious, and the fact that it still takes monumental effort and skill to succeed shows just how mighty and dangerous she is as a witch queen.
  • Curbstomp Battle:
    • Her sheer power, knowledge and skills as a prodigy witch queen meant many if not most fights against threats and opponents becomes this. This led to her becoming so bored with her life and reign that she becomes a Super Villain just to have fun challenging and have a real challenge against her in turn, whereupon she proves herself one of the most dangerous villainous threats to the world (for a value of 'villainy') precisely for the same reason, requiring monumental effort by heroic forces to challenge and defeat her.
    • Implied with her and Walpurga's first conflict with Ponyland, as it's mentioned that despite all the heroes and magic there she managed to conquer the whole place in relatively short order.
    • Upon her resurrection, she apparently retook Walpurga from the Hydianite covens that had taken it over mostly by herself. She only handed the task over toe Shell Binder because she got bored.
  • Eaten Alive: While not the defining part of her forte, owing to some villainous Witches being known to eat people, and Giants, Dragons and other giant creatures and monsters whom she likes to transform into being known to devour those smaller than they are, she felt obliged to do the same as a 'Contractual Supervillain' whenever the opportunity presents themselves, sparing not even her children from being swallowed by her. Of course, like Eclaira, she keeps those she devoured alive and safe in her innards and does not make it impossible for them to break out. She also do this to punish genuinely evil witches who does that to innocents in genuinely vile ways, so to 'give them a taste of their own medicine' for their crimes. Given her incredible power and skill, she had done this to whole lands like Eclaira did, eating Ponyland and Unicornia the first time she does so as a Giant before they broke out and restored everything, and getting into an eating competition with Eclaira one time which saw them both consuming several kingdoms.
  • Evil Overlord: Classified as an 'Evil Overlady' and classifies herself as much.
  • Forced Transformation: A specialty of hers even in her vast talent for all kinds of witchcraft, capable of transforming others harmlessly into other creatures or transform herself into more powerful beings and monsters.
  • Good Parents: She dotes on her daughters Abra-Ca-Dabra and Pumpkin Tart, and when they decide to move to Ponyland and oppose her as heroic witches she gave them her full blessings, even rewarding them for defeating her and visiting them at Halloween to have fun together.
  • Graceful Loser: She never took her defeats personally, as being a supervillain was something she did to find things actually capable of challenging her, so the chance of losing is exactly what she wants.
    Queen Hocus-Pocus: AHAHAHA! Thank you!
Sunny Daze: Uh... we just kicked your flank, dudette.
Queen Hocus-Pocus: Yes! And it was the most fun I've had in years! Let's do this again some time!
  • Hot Witch: Is noted to be 'quite a looker' in her prime and looked well even in her twilight years. With her ascension to godhood and return in the Fourth Age, she is back in her prime and hotter than ever as an Alicorn.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: The main reason for her status as a Broken Ace: she was so powerful and so talented as a witch and ruler most threats and things don't pose a challenge to her, leaving her utterly bored with her life and reign. This eventually led to her embracing supervillainy and becoming an Evil Overlady at 'Princess' Cold Heart's suggestion in order to have some real fun challenging and being challenged.
  • It Amused Me: As the most powerful witch queen in Walpurga's history, she was so skilled and mighty as a witch that hardly anything ever poses a challenge to her. Her boredom led to her becoming a Super Villain at Cold Heart's suggestion and finding fun being a supervillain and 'Evil Overlady' threatening Ponyland and the rest of the world.
  • I Regret Nothing: How Hocus-Pocus views her defeats, as win or lose she is having the time of her life.
  • The Kindnapper: This one time during her Fourth Age return when she kidnapped the children of Ponyville and challenged the town's heroes and denizens to get them back from her. Of course, owing to her Affably Evil Noble Demon disposition as a Third Age 'Hobby Villain' she did not intend to nor actually do them any harm, allowing the children to enjoy the spectacle and even playing fun games with them and her subordinates to pass the time while the heroes struggles to reach and rescue them.
  • No Challenge Equals No Satisfaction: Her villainy is entirely motivated by this problem, since she is so talented, powerful and skilled as a witch queen she faces virtually no challenges, and thus is bored out of her skull.
  • Noble Demon: Officially she's a 'Lawful Evil' witch queen seeking to Take Over the World alongside other villainous factions, but is like many Third Age villains doing it less for malice and more for fun, challenge or honourable goals, and keeps her more villainous witches in line from going too far even as they work their villainous plans.
  • One-Man Army: One MARE/WITCH army, on account of being an ungodly powerful and skilled witch queen who could literally one-shot whole armies of witches by herself, leaving her so bored with her life that she eventually turned to (Affably Evil Noble Demon) supervillainy just to find a worthwhile challenge in the heroes of the Third Age. It's noted that she mainly retook Walpurga from the Hydianite covens that now ruled it in the Third Age by herself. She only handed the task over to Shell Binder once she grew bored.
  • Our Founder: While she wasn't the one to found the Third Age Covendom of Walpurga, she and her daughters would either rebuild it from scratch or restore its present day remnants to their former glory upon their ascensions and return from the afterlife in the Fourth Age.
  • Physical God: Hocus-Pocus' power and skill as a witch queen is so great, she could match with heroic deities with her magic and could legit be considered one were it not for her mortality. She would go on to become one for real when she makes her return in the Fourth Age, having trained under the scions and servants of Nekelmu, the Evil Primeval and Tazu, the Magic Primeval themselves and ascending straight to a godling instead of demigoddess due to her prodigious potential.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: While being a Super Villain outside of Walpurga, she's legitimately a good ruler beloved by her subjects in Walpurga and is widely considered one of the best witch queens to come to power there.
  • Silly Reason for War: She and Walpurga went to war and conquered Ponyland over something involving a duck.
  • Sizeshifter: As part of her shapeshifting abilities, she could turn herself into a Giant.
  • Sorcerous Overlord: She was the greatest witch-queen of Walpurga whose menace stemmed from her prodigous talent, knowledge and strength in the command of witchcraft. That being said, in contrast to most examples of this trope she isn't that particularly evil, viewing her Super Villain shindigs as a hobby.
  • So Proud of You: Far from outraged by her daughters becoming heroic witches to oppose her, even moving to Ponyland to do so, Hocus-Pocus couldn't be happier, especially if and whenever they defeat her.
Queen Hocus-Pocus: I am increasing your allowance, my little witchlings!
    Her daughters: ...You're not mad?
Queen Hocus-Pocus: Of course not! I'm so proud of you!
  • Super Villain: Became this to escape her boredom at the suggestion of 'Princess' Cold Heart, who did the same for similar reasons.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Has transformed herself with magic into other creatures like Dragons in battle.
  • Wicked Witch: Emphasis more on 'Witch' then 'Wicked'.
  • World's Strongest Man: The single most powerful witch in the history of Walpurga, and likely one of the most powerful mortal spellcasters to have ever lived in terms of natural power. Deconstructed, as her sheer power meant she was bored to death and she became a supervillain entirely to find something that could truly challenge her.
  • Worthy Opponent:
    • The Seasonal Princesses of Ponyland and Princess Rarity of Unicornia were the first people to ever hand her a defeat since she became Witch Queen, and she is overjoyed by it.
    • She became one to Sekra and Vondur and their respective empires, on account of herself and Walpurgia being one of the few factions capable of challenging them on a magical level.
    • Her own daughters Abra-Ca-Dabra and Pumpkin Tart became this to her. She's extremely proud of them for this.
    • Following her return in the Fourth Age, she managed to earn the respect of Vicearch Iniquitous Herself as a fellow witch of prodigous skills and strength (on top of other witches, warlocks and wizards like Karaldina De Hex and Starswirl the Bearded), and while disagreeing with each others' dispositions still shared notes and taught each others' subordinates and children whenever they are not sparring or struggling as a Friendly Enemy to one another. Indeed, the strength and skill of Hocus-Pocus in magic was such that she managed to fight an avatar of Iniquitous to a standstill, which both enjoyed as the best fight they had in years.

    Abra-Ca-Dabra
  • Antagonistic Offspring: While not particularly hostile to her mother per-say, she still moved in with her sister to Ponyland to help defend it and the world against her mother's Super Villain antics. Her mother couldn't be more proud.
  • Back from the Dead: Like her sister, she had returned from the afterlife in the Fourth Age as an ascendant Alicorn demigoddess to continue opposing their witch queen mother, upon her respective return to life and supervillainy as an ascendant Alicorn godling.

    Pumpkin Tart
  • Antagonistic Offspring: While not particularly hostile to her mother per-say, she still moved in with her sister to Ponyland to help defend it and the world against her mother's Super Villain antics. Her mother couldn't be more proud.
  • Back from the Dead: Like her sister, she had returned from the afterlife in the Fourth Age as an ascendant Alicorn demigoddess to continue opposing their witch queen mother, upon her respective return to life and supervillainy as an ascendant Alicorn godling

    Shell Binder

Character: Heroic/Anti-Villainous

Alignment: Lawful Good/Lawful Evil

Type: Archmage, Ancient Witch, Magical Nanny, Noble Demon, Great Tortoise, King Maker, Divine Champion

Faction: Covendom of Walpurga

Shell Binder (profile can be found here), Shell Binder is Hocus-Pocus' right-hoof tortoise.

  • The Archmage: While old and unassuming-looking, Shell Binder is in fact a magician whose skill allows her to be one of the few who could stalemate Tomb King Necraaiqed, the Grand Sorcerer of Crypta himself during the Third Age, and pose a gigantic threat to heroes as the right-hoof of Hocus-Pocus.
  • The Champion: It's implied following Hocus-Pocus' return in the Fourth Age that Shell Binder became her divine champion of sorts (or at least received similar empowerments) upon her own return, as it's stated Hocus-Pocus' divine boons had reinvigorated the already ancient turtle.
  • The Dragon: She's the right-hoof Tortoise of Queen Hocus-Pocus as well as her strongest subordinate, but when not aiding her mistress in her hobbyist supervillainy, she helped raise Hocus-Pocus' children as their nanny.
  • Expy: Based on Kammy Koopa, albeit with a nobler and more Anti-Villain disposition.
  • Friendly Enemy: Being their nannies who help raised them, both Abra-Ca-Dabra and Pumpkin Tart are on friendly terms with Shell Binder even as they battled against her and their mother as heroic witches trying to stop their Witch-Queen mother's supervillainy.
  • Large and in Charge: She's Hocus-Pocus' right-hoof and most powerful follower. Due to being an ancient Great Tortoise, she's also the size of a small island.
  • Nothing Personal: Despite her Queen being an affable supervillain as a hobby, she's still loyal to her and even helped Hocus-Pocus' daughters, Pumpkin Tart and Abra-Ca-Dabra, as their fillyhood nanny. She genuinely doesn't resent Pumpkin Tart and Abra-Ca-Dabra deciding to become heroic witches to oppose their mother, even if their chosen paths inevitably lead to them clashing with her.
  • Old Master: She is old even by Great Tortoise standards, but lost none of her edge as an incredibly powerful magic-user, posing a major threat to any group of heroes or champions she faces.
  • The Slow Path: Having outlived her mistress and her children, she spent much of the Third and Fourth Age in magically-assisted slumbers which enabled her to live well into the present day, just in time for Hocus-Pocus and her charges to return to the living world following their ascensions.
  • Time Abyss: Exactly how old Shell Binder is is unknown, but she's been around since the early Third Age...when they may have accidentally woke the already ancient tortiose up digging the foundations of the palace.
  • Turtle Island: Well, Tortiose Island, but due to how old she is, she's the size of a small island and allowed her Queen to build a small castle on her back as a mobile base.
  • Undying Loyalty: She is Witch Queen Hocus-Pocus' right-hoof and remained loyal to her well into the Fourth Age when Hocus-Pocus ascended and returned from the afterlife.
