Iscalio

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/iscalio.png

Located in Forsena's southeastern area. It is a rich country but the current king never thinks about prospering his people. The land here is very fertile; it is filled with grasslands and forests. The area is also very mountainous. Their flag is colored yellow.

Tropes associated with Iscalio in general

  • Boisterous Bruiser: The nation as a whole. If you're not interested in ruling people, but wanna have fun steamrolling other enemies with your strength, come on in. Dryst may be interested.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Almost everyone in the country are nutjobs, but they're nutjobs that are also competent knights, so they can get away with it.

    Dryst

Dryst (Voiced by Kouji Ishii)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dryst_character.jpg

Class: Tyrant/Mad Monarch -> Super Tyrant/Mad Monarch Z

Ruler of Iscalio, known as the 'Mad Monarch'. An extremely chaotic, selfish person who does things as he pleases and ridicules things like virtue and goodness, causing suffering to his people, but his generals respects him enough. Against his enemies, if he's not streamrolling them with brute, boisterous force, his very off personality can rile up even the most serious and dreaded enemies.

  • At Least I Admit It: Dryst never hides the fact that he's a lunatic asshole that makes his people suffer, he's at least very honest about it. In fact, he considers any other goody-goody rulers (like Lance, Cai and Lyonesse) to be Hypocrites because they hide the fact that they're also conquering Forsena like him behind sweet words like virtue and honor and peace, and the 'bad', aggressive rulers like Vaynard and Zemeckis to be honest and likable.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Unifying Forsena with Iscalio means that Dryst's sense of hedonism cannot be stopped and after he divides the remains of Forsena to his men, he announces that they should fight in a war all over again. For shits and giggles. While this is seen as a normal everyday course for the people of Iscalio (except Ulster), Forsena is facing yet another dark age ahead unless Ulster (who was given Padstow) somehow manages to score a total victory in the new war... The Book of Brigandine states that Iscalio brought peace, but it was only temporary and no one knows if Dryst will suddenly have a change of mind later.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Encountering Dryst with a more serious character will usually end with them being pissed and having to break their stoic personality because Dryst will rile them up by going very off topic instead of focusing on the heart of the battle (He is more concerned with how cool Cador's helmet is rather than how he's the frickin' Death Knight, for example). And that's before he starts kicking their asses...
  • Boisterous Bruiser: A crazy variant.
  • The Caligula: To the point that many characters are aware of how crazy and evil he is during their conversations with him.
  • Critical Hit: Grand Edition gives him a 10% boost to his critical hit rate.
  • Dark Is Evil: The only ruler with an affinity for the dark-element and can cast dark elemental spells.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Dryst is a hedonistic tyrant, but used to have a dog he loved so much as a kid. When the dog died, he made a special grave for him. He later names Iria after his dog.
  • The Hedonist: There's only one thing Dryst cares about: him having fun, and if anyone wanna join in, sure thing. The rest, like country and people's welfare, can just go to hell.
  • It's All About Me: Hell yes. Though somehow less unsympathetic than most of them.
  • Jerkass: Dryst is usually fond of mocking his enemies and allies without a care.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Once he reaches level 30, he promotes to SUPER TYRANT(Mad Tyrant in Grand Edition.).
  • Pet the Dog: Despite being a tyrant with little care towards morality and decency, he surprisingly has a lot of these:
    • Basically adopted Hula from an orphanage and despite assigning her as a rune knight, he never orders her in combat and just uses her as a maid.
    • He basically raised Iria as a rune knight, after being left for dead by Bulnoil in the wilderness for being a failed experiment.
    • Despite treating Ulster as a Butt-Monkey, he is one of the Iscalio Rune Knights to be given a country of his own, giving a chance for Forsena to enter an age of peace in case Ulster wins the next war.
    • He's fine with Miguel being in his ranks and acting like The Dutiful Son to his family obligations and doesn't stop him from trying to go home temporarily to check on his family. And Dryst doesn't stop any of the Rand siblings wanting to join Iscalio solely to reunite with Miguel.
  • The Social Darwinist: He believes that the strong shall rule while the weak will stay as losers, which is how he runs Iscalio and gives out certain Pet the Dog to his army because he somehow sees them as 'strong'. And also why in the ending he challenges Ulster to try and beat him with his newly given Padstow: All he needs to do is to prove that his so-called 'virtue' is stronger than Dryst's hedonism and craziness, and thus more deserving to rule.
  • Sinister Scythe
  • Troll: Word of advice, don't try to bring logic to Dryst, he'll just mess it up to the point you're not even sure what you were talking about before he started kicking your ass. Best exemplified with his encounter with New Almekia's Adilicia:
Adilicia: Mad Monarch Dryst, you're so different from Prince Lance. He's naive and innocent. You're evil and cruel.
Dryst: Hmmmm? How true! I am naive and innocent!
Adilicia: Hey! That part was about Lance!
Dryst: Oh, so I'm the one who's...
    Adilicia: Evil and cruel!
Dryst: Hmmm, well, I can't disappoint a lady. Evil and cruel, it is then!
  • Villainous Harlequin: Is dressed like one.
  • Villain Protagonist: A playable character and only in to capitalize on the chaos to have more fun on his own without a care for the welfare of others.
  • War Is Glorious: To the point that once he unites the continent, he divides it between himself and makes his subordinates kings (Ulster gets New Almekia, Camden gets Caerleon, Bagdemagus gets Norgard, Victoria gets Leonia, Gallo gets Iscalio while Dryst keeps Esgares.) in order to restart the war again and fight amongst each other for fun.

    Iria

Iria (Voiced by Sachiko Kojima)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4715265505_9fcba483d8.jpg

Class: Valkyrie (LoF) / Killer Doll (Grand Edition)

A female knight found by Dryst and taken under his wing in the past. Cold and emotionless, she follows Dryst's orders without question and less words, earning her the nickname 'Killer Doll'. She turned out to be one of Bulnoil's puppets, who eventually got her own consciousness thanks to being with Dryst.

  • Ax-Crazy: A subdued one when compared to her master Dryst. Best seen when she expresses her desire to make Lyonesse's beautiful face express despair and pain for her master in their battle conversation.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: The reason behind her Undying Loyalty to Dryst. She was a barmaid who was abused and even sold by her own father as an Unwitting Test Subject. Then after being discarded as a failure, she was found and recruited by Dryst. As evil as Dryst is, he shows a lot of Pet the Dog moments towards her, and the rest of Iscalio treats her well.
  • Emotionless Girl: Due to Bulnoil's experiments. She admits to Victoria that she's envious at other people being able to express their emotions freely. She sheds a tear after seeing Victoria express her sorrow towards her and eventually lets out a laugh in Iscalio's ending.
  • Evil Red Head
  • Light Is Not Good: Due to Gameplay and Story Segregation, in Legend of Forsena, Iria is classed as a Valkyrie, a class that can heal and cast Holy Word, two Light Magics and had White/Blue affinity... but she's an Ax-Crazy Emotionless Girl that kills without mercy. This is fixed in Grand Edition with her unique class Killer Doll, it makes her a Black/Blue unit and trades her white magic into Curse.
  • Recruited from the Gutter: Victoria described Iria as a stray dog roaming the wilderness before Dryst recruited her. Bulnoil discarded Iria because she was a failed experiment.
  • Red Baron: "The Killer Doll" for her absolute obedience to King Dryst.
  • Undying Loyalty: To King Dryst due to saving her in the wilderness after being discarded by Bulnoil as a failed experiment.
  • Unwitting Test Subject:She was originally a barmaid named Celena, who was sold to Bulnoil by her own father for only a silver coin in order to find a test subject for his experiments in immortality. The experiment was a failure and she was thrown out into the wilderness by Bulnoil before being eventually found by Dryst.

    Camden

Camden (Voiced by Shigeru Ushiyama)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4715909656_a8895e7a5b.jpg

Class: Druid

A professional brown-noser to Dryst. However, unlike most Smug Snake, Camden is competent when situations demands him to. Aside of brown-nosing Dryst, he spends his time not getting along with Ulster (and usually prevailing on Dryst's attention)

    Ulster

Ulster (Voiced by Yuji Kishi)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4715266869_13591ff919.jpg

Class: Bishop

Iscalio's Only Sane Man, the one guy who is genuinely caring about the welfare of the people. This being Iscalio, however, made him into the Butt-Monkey of pretty much everyone in the nation. His love and determination to care for well-being if the kingdom is the only reason he didn't just leave.

  • No-Respect Guy: Ulster is heavily implied to be the one actually managing the kingdom, while Dryst and his rune knights enjoy having lavish parties (by using half of Iscalio's treasury) at his expense.
  • Only Sane Man: He tries to rein in the chaos in the kingdom and run it properly to no avail. Hilariously, despite being this in Iscalio, Merriot does not think he is normal anyway.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: With Camden.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After spending the rest of Iscalio's story being treated as a Butt-Monkey, King Dryst gives the territories of New Almekia for him rule for...
    • Yank the Dog's Chain: ...only to hear that Dryst intends to restart the war by having everyone fight each other and his two neighbors besides Dryst(Esgares) are Camden(Caerleon) and Bagdemagus (Norgard).

    Bagdemagus

Bagdemagus (Voiced by Kiyoyuki Yanada)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4715909848_709f08d813.jpg

Class: Berserker

A boisterous barbarian who is kind of like Dryst, only cares about having fun in battle. He's somewhat dumb, but he makes it up with his sheer strength, and usually he belittles those who use agility or intelligence in battle, not strength.

  • Blood Knight: Usually enjoys a good battle and isn't disappointed at losing at all. He even joins another kingdom if Iscalio is defeated, just to have fun fighting battles.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Aside of Dryst, Bagdemagus is a standout example in a country built on this philosophy, he's a musclebound, laugh-happy guy that likes smashing things up without care about speed or wit.
  • Dumb Muscle: He's all about power, not very well-versed in intelligence or speed and he ridiculed those who favored either.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He has a chance to encounter Daffy in battle as enemies in case of Iscalio being defeated, but both just expressed how they personally progressed as a Knight. As of Bagdemagus? He's still having fun fighting, he never changed.

    Victoria

Victoria (Voiced by Youko Sasaki)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4715267477_8f8aca1b67.jpg

Class: Sorceress

A beautiful witch infamous for her wicked character and strong perfume, self conscious to a point that she could stare in the mirror all day.

  • I Fight for the Strongest Side!: Her reason for siding with King Dryst, this also why she joins the nation who conquered Iscalio.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While she is an arrogant and vain sorceress, she is shown to love her parents and while she is initially suspicious of Iria, she later invites her to her tea party as an apology and is genuinely sorrowful (to the point of Inelegant Blubbering) at her Dark and Troubled Past and her current condition and is overjoyed at seeing Iria cry, proving she hasn't permanently lost her emotions at all.

    Gallo

Gallo (Voiced by Mitsuaki Madono)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4715910330_5fd9007ae2.jpg

Class: Ranger

A Knight with a painted face. He was a traveling clown before Dryst recruited him to Iscalio.

  • The Charmer: He is described to be a smooth talker who gets along well with everyone, even Bagdemagus. When Dryst challenges him, he manages to talk his way out of it.
  • Recruited from the Gutter: When he questions Dryst about recruiting Iria to Iscalio, Dryst points out that he is no different because he too was just a traveling clown before Dryst recruited him.

    Daffy

Daffy (Voiced by Naoki Bandou)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4715266921_0c9a08471b.jpg

Class: Samurai

Nicknamed the "Wallet with a hole", Daffy is always complaining about how his reward is not enough. This makes him look more like a mercenary.

  • Only in It for the Money: All he cares about is how much he is getting paid, he even wonders how much he'll be rewarded for defeating Lance in battle and mocks him when he proclaims he won't be defeated by someone of who only cares about money. This makes him one of the two rune knights willing joins the nation who conquered Iscalio due to not wanting to be out of a job.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Daffy can encounter Bagdemagus in battle as enemies after Iscalio is defeated. They act more like a reunion of friends with Daffy stating that he's making progress in earning money.

    Miguel

Miguel (Voiced by Hiroshi Yanaka)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4715266829_cc763a8054_o.jpg

Class: Cavalier

The eldest of the Rand siblings, sharing none of the craziness of the nut jobs in Iscalio, but only fighting to uphold the honor of the Rand family. Miguel is aloof, but nevertheless cares for his younger siblings.

  • Aloof Big Brother: He's emotionally a bit too distant in trying to honor his family. This is also why unlike Castor, when he encounters Liguel, he'll make her pull a Face–Heel Turn, because he's unfazed with her pleas and it makes her decide to join him instead. Likewise, him encountering Castor alone will result nothing because both of them being too stubborn and aloof for their own good.
  • The Dutiful Son: Generally concerned to be the model child of the Rand family that keeps up its honor.
  • Family Honor: The one who takes this trope very seriously between the siblings. Miguel puts this over family reunion (Liguel) or self-advancement in career (Castor).
  • Heel–Face Turn: But if he's encountered with BOTH Liguel and Castor in the same banner, Miguel finally cows in and will rejoin his siblings.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: He's only in for the Rand Family Honor instead of Iscalio's various hedonism and debauchery antics. Surprisingly, Dryst lets him do whatever he pleases instead of dragging him along.

    Lucia

Lucia (Voiced by Keiko Nomura)

Class: Scout

    Teath

Teath (Voiced by Soichiro Hoshi)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4715910978_eac6dcccf6.jpg

Class: Fighter

An ordinary Knight with a warped background. However, everything changed when he met Hula.

  • Avenging the Villain: If you defeat Iscalio, he will join another faction. On the other hand, if another faction defeats Iscalio, he may join you. Despite acknowledging that Iscalio is full of weirdos, he considers Iscalio as his homeland and wants to avenge it.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: He has feelings for Hula and it is what drives him to be a better Knight, but he is struggling to tell her that. When he is about to admit it, Hula suddenly remembers that she has a business with Dryst and leaves.

    Hula

Hula (Voiced by Kanako Mitsuhashi)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4715910372_88790af903.jpg

Class: Cleric

A Knight in Iscalio who serves as a maid to Dryst.

  • Magikarp Power: She starts out as a Level 1 Cleric, but her rune power will skyrocket if you are patient enough to train her. Her rune area is on the lower side though.
  • Purity Personified: She is naive and completely trusts Dryst, and even calls him kind.
