Characters / Berwick Saga Berwick League

Go To

Founded by the enslaved farmers and exiles of the Verian Clergy who migrated west due to the threat of the rising Raze Empire, The Berwick League is an alliance of Kingdoms with the intent of combatting the expansionism of the Raze Empire. While originally meant to be an equal alliance, the Kingdom of Veria is the de-facto leader due to it being the center of the Verian Faith.

The Kingdom of Veria

    King Volcens

King Volcens of Veria

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/volcens_1_9.png
The current King of Veria after the death of his father, King Mordias.
  • Armchair Military: Does not take part in front line combat, and ran away to Navaron as soon as the capital Valemtine was threatened.
  • Drunk with Power: He gets better in his last moments.
  • Expy: Inverted Trope. Post Time Skip Dimitri is his expy. Unlike Volcens, he can survive, become a reconstruction of the Knight in Shining Armor and turn into The Good King. Also, a silver haired tyrant who openly hates the protagonist and sends him in dangerous missions expecting him to die? He's basically King Garon and even looks like a younger version of him.
  • General Failure: His "accomplishments" upon his ascension as King is retreating all the way to Navarron while the Raze Empire conquers his kingdom and abandoning his allies in the process.
    • Later, he has Prince Bernard recalled from the front lines and imprisoned out of paranoia. This leads to the front lines collapsing without his leadership and the death of Reese's father Margrave Bernstol.
  • Hate Sink: In spades. He's not content in utterly disrespecting Reese to his face despite the latter's loyalty and efforts, as he constantly sends him into suicide missions without help. He basically makes life miserable for everyone in his kingdom due to his selfish and even childish decisions... until his Heel Realization.
  • Heel Realization: After Jacharam overthrows him, orders him to kill his sister and reveals that he isn't Herman, he explains to Volcens that he manipulated him the whole time in order to defeat the Berwick League from the inside. Volcens realizes his mistakes and decides to face him. Alas, it costs him his life.
  • The Neidermeyer: Demands his troops to fight and not retreat at all cost or else he'll brand them as traitors, all while he's content with sitting in Navarron and not leading his troops to battle.
  • The Paranoiac: Best seen with his Establishing Character Moment with Reese in which he accuses both him and his father Bernstol (who is currently fighting in the front lines) as traitors just because he is unimpressed by the number of troops he brought to Navarron.
  • Pet the Dog: Early in the game, he puts a stop to Herman slandering Duke Roswick, appreciating his loyalty and efforts. Unfortunately, this doesn't last as his paranoia grows.
  • Redemption Equals Death: He faces Jacharam to protect his sister and to atone for his mistakes. He dies in the process, but he manages to buy enough time for Reese to make it to the throne room, which allows him to save his sister as well as Duke Roswick and Reed.
  • Sketchy Successor: His father Mordias the IV was a brave and powerful warrior, a Frontline General and The Chessmaster. Volcens on the other hand... see the rest of his tropes.
  • 0% Approval Rating: Almost nobody has a kind word for him due to his rule causing much hardships and his less than ideal personality. His own sister openly criticizes him during his first meeting with Reese.

    King Mordias IV (Unmarked Spoilers)

King Mordias IV of Veria

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mordias_4_1.png
The late king of Veria, killed in action while attempting to reinforce the League's ailing frontlines. Though he is dead prior to the game's events, his acts have cast a long shadow over Lazberia and prove to be instrumental to the outcome of the Berwick-Raze conflict.
  • Ambition Is Evil: He is ruthless in securing his position as king and will stop at nothing to gain fame and power at all costs.
  • Authority Equals Ass Kicking: He is renowned as a brave and powerful warrior.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: His highly sought out plan to wage war on the Raze Empire backfires badly as he and his invasion force is repelled and put on the defensive and he himself is killed in an ambush. This results in the Berwick League losing most of their territory through conquest by the Raze Empire or defection by the some of it's kingdoms.
  • The Chessmaster: After the Apostle Silpha accepted his apology when she threatened him with excommunication due to his refusal to end the war with the Raze Empire despite being confirmed as King of Veria, he diverted her bodyguards and had her assassinated, then framed the Raze Empire for her death in order to cement his popularity and power as the King of Veria and the leader of the Berwick League.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Whether it's imprisoning Prince Bernard with a false ceasefire or requesting the help of the Berwick League's longtime enemy to win the Succession Crisis Civil War, he will do whatever it takes to secure his power.
  • Expy: Of Lekain. Both ordered the assassination of their religious apostle in order to secure their position and power, and manipulated the Fantastic Racism of their people to their own ends. They have also enacted a The Purge of their own.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: He may already be dead by the start of the game, but his actions played a critical role in setting off the war between the Berwick League and the Raze Empire.
  • Heel Realization: By his middle-aged years, he became remorseful of the bloodshed and conflicts he had created, even turning a blind eye to his wife and daughter's release of Prince Bernard.
  • Irony: His actions to secure power and unite the Berwick League leads to his death and his league's near collapse.
  • Karmic Death: He is killed in an ambush by General Zephyrus aka Prince Friedrich, who's life, family and kingdom he directly ruined for his own ambition.
  • The Purge: He has the Shining Knights killed to the last man in a seven-year conflict known as the "Shining Rebellion" when they rebelled after finding out that he was responsible for the Apostle's death.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Pardoned Margrave Bernstol of assaulting a fellow noble who sexually harassed a maid, feeling that his martial skills and leadership are important for his military.
  • Walking Spoiler: This character essentially reveals that the latest war between the Berwick League and the Raze Empire isn't as simple as it looks.

    Princess Sienna

Princess Sienna of Veria

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sienna_1.png
Volcens' sister and the Crown Princess of Veria.
  • Big Good: The Crown Princess of the Kingdom Reese is fighting for and unlike her brother she's competent and helpful. There is also the fact that she becomes The High Queen after her brother's death.
  • Composite Character: She has the class of Celica, a villainous brother like Guinivere, and the personality of Nyna.
  • Expy: Of Elincia, especially her role in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, since both are princesses of the Kingdom The Hero is working for, green-haired Big Good(s) and become queens of their homeland at the end of the game.
  • The High Queen: Of Veria, upon her brother's death.
  • Rebellious Princess: She is not afraid of confronting Volcens and Herman when they're going too far out of paranoia or cruelty.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Unlike Volcens she supports Reese and gives him a promotion upon saving her from Jacharam and avenging her brother's death.
  • White Sheep: When it comes to the Verian royal family, she is unquestionably this compared to both her brother and father.

Duchy of Navarron

    Duke Roswick

Duke Roswick of Navaron

The Duke of Narvia, where the Berwick League is currently regrouping. Prudent and understanding, he is sympathetic to Reese.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: Tries to advise and direct King Volcens regarding the war effort with little to no success due to the influence of Herman and Padolf.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: To Reese as he is one of the few high ranking people in Volcen's court who highly supports him. Although he is shown to be very pragmatic at times, particularly in the Chapter 6 introduction.

    Tianna

Tianna

A subordinate of Lord Vanmillion who acts as both housekeeper and secretary to Lord Reese.

Duchy of Bornia

Berwick League Minor Bosses

    Benner

Benner

Class: Axe Soldier
A deserter who follows Ritchens. He guards the bridge that leads to the eastern village.
  • Starter Villain: One of the bosses in the first chapter.
  • Mighty Glacier: Your first preview to how strong the knights of Berwick Saga are defensively as his shield adds to already high defense that even a powerful Crutch Character like Ward can't kill off that easily.

    Ritchens

Ritchens

Class: Verian Knight
A leader of a group of deserters from the Berwick League who have resorted to banditry after being ejected from Navarron.

    Lyarc

Lyarc

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lyarc_1.png
Class: General
Leader of the Bornian invasion force intent on attacking Navarron. He is fought in Chapter 5: Hold the Fort.
  • Anti-Villain He is not thrilled to be serving under the orders of Cardinal Almachus and wonders why Duke Reed gave him control of the entire Duchy of Bornia.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: He is utterly surprised that the Sinon Knights are driving back his much larger force, forcing him to retreat if he is left with too few Bornian units.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: The first General to be fought and he is quite tough despite the lack of skills, as his General shield plus his already high defense makes him utterly invincible to physical attacks, requiring the use of magic or a high-strength character equipped with an anti-shield weapon. He is also well protected, being backed by a powerful armor knight who constantly uses Battle Cry to buff his attacks.

    Nielsen

Nielsen

Class: General
A Bornian Knight in charge of the prison keeping Vester and his resistance. Is fought in Chapter 7: Rescue Mission.
  • Les Collaborateurs: Unlike the other Bornian soldiers who are reluctant to serve the Raze Empire, he has fully thrown his lot with them, even changing his religion to serve the Raze Church.
