Voiced by: Yuriko Fuchizaki
Machines uses: Super Astute Jr., Sonic Saber, Vanguard Sonic, Hurricane Sonic, Buster-Sonic (WGP), Blitzer-Sonic (MAX, manga only), RodeoSonic (My First Big), Great BlastSonic (Return Racers), CosmoSonic (Return Racers)
- Absurd Phobia: Ghosts. In the episode in which this phobia turns up, however, his fear turns out to be justified.
- Batman Gambit: One could argue Retsu pulled one of these on Professor Oogami in order have his help to build Hurricane Sonic. Retsu never told Oogami he intended on building a battle machine, yet he was aware that Oogami wouldn't lose a chance to prove that his battle machines are better than Tsuchiya's conventional ones.
- Curtains Match the Window: Red hair and eyes.
- Fake Defector: When he asked Oogami to help him build a new machine to surpass Cyclone Magnum. It only lasts one episode though, and truth be told, Retsu never told Oogami he wanted to build a battle machine, he just wanted to learn the secrets behind Professor Oogami's machines.
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The responsible sibling to Gou.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: Despite Retsu's red motif, he's the Blue Oni to Gou's Red Oni.

Voiced by: Urara Takano

Jiromaru Takaba
Jiromaru Takaba
Voiced by: Ikue Otani
Machines uses: Jiromaru Special
- Cheaters Never Prosper: When he first tries to beat Sonic Saber and Magnum Saber in a race, on a track built by him, he purposefully makes his lane much easier to run by than the lanes destined to Retsu and Go. The Seiba brothers manage to beat him anyway.
- Free-Range Children: He and his brother appear to be fending for themselves when they were first introduced, and they're often seen camping in the wilderness.
- Out of Focus: At first it seems like he will be a prominent character in the anime, but shortly after he's introduced, the story starts focusing much more on his older brother Ryo than on him.
- Sleeves Are for Wimps
Tokichi Mikuni
Tokichi Mikuni
Voiced by: Chie Kojiro
Machines uses: Spin-Axe, Spin Cobra, Spin-Viper (WGP), Spin-Axe Zero (Return Racers)
- Butt-Monkey: The catch is, he actually looks and sounds like a monkey; he even wears a monkey suit sometimes.
- Defeat Means Friendship: Being defeated by Retsu marks the start of his friendship with the Seiba brothers.
- Fiction 500: The Mikuni family is insanely rich, and he often uses his vast funds to finance their (mis)adventures.
- Sharp-Dressed Man: When he isn't wearing his monkey suit, of course.
- Spoiled Brat: At first, though he gets better after a lesson in humility from losing to Retsu and being disciplined by his father.
Futoshi Kurosawa
Futoshi Kurosawa
Voiced by: Akio Suyama
Machine used: Black Saber
- The Big Guy: He's much taller than the Seiba brothers, even though he's not much older than them.
- Cheaters Never Prosper: Kurosawa always ends up badly when he's cheating.
- Last-Name Basis: No one calls him by his first name, Futoshi.
- Weaponized Car: Black Saber was one of these when races still weren't supposed to be battle races, which is eventually dropped after Kurosawa's Heel–Face Turn when he starts using a conventional machine without battle parts. Instead, his Black Saber Power Guard (PG) machine variants focus on durability and stability to counter battle racers.
J

- Blow You Away: Proto Saber JB's air cannons (dropped after J's Heel–Face Turn).
- Defeat Means Friendship: After being defeated by Retsu and Gou.
- Emotionless Boy: Before his Heel–Face Turn. After that, he becomes more talkative and expressive.
- The Smart Guy: Having been raised as Dr. Oogami's battle racer and becoming Dr. Tsuchiya's lab assistant, J is often the technical expert for the group.
Makoto Kohiro
Makoto Kohiro
Voiced by: Motoko Kumai
Machines used: Avante 2001 Jr., Saber 600 Special, Saber 600 DX
- Out of Focus: He wins the Winter Race, but then the story starts focusing on other characters.
Jun Sagami
Jun Sagami
Voiced by: Chinami Nishimura
Machines used: Home Run Manta Ray
- Curtains Match the Window: Brown hair and eyes.
- Demonic Possession: In the filler episode where a race is organized at Gou, Retsu and Jun's school, Jun is possessed by the spirit of a student that died five years before the events of the series.
- Selective Obliviousness: When the ghost of a student that died in the school five years before disappears in front of everyone, Jun dismisses it as being just an optical illusion.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Tomboy to Chiiko's Girly Girl.
- Tomboyish Baseball Cap: A pink one with her name written on it. Justified, since Jun actually plays baseball.
Chiiko Mikuni
Chiiko Mikuni
Voiced by: Akiko Yajima
Machines used: Flower Axe
- Annoying Younger Sibling: To Tokichi.
- Fiction 500: Is part of the insanely rich Mikuni family.
- Gag Lips: Seems to have inherited those from her father. She lost it when she grows up in Return Racers.
- Spanner in the Works: She messes up her brother's plans twice, with the second time being a serious matter as Kai's trying to take over Mikuni game center.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Girly Girl to Jun's Tomboy.
Oogami Racers
Kai Okita
Kai Okita
Voiced by: Yuka Imai
Machine used: Beak Spider
- Absurdly Sharp Blade: His car, Beak Spider, has these as it's main weapon. Its Razor Wind blade cleanly cuts through soda cans and trees.
- Armored Villains, Unarmored Heroes: Downplayed example, and a justified one. Kai uses a metallic glove in one of his hands, presumabily to protect his hand from Beak Spider's Absurdly Sharp Blade when he's holding the machine.
Gen Kondou
Gen Kondou
Voiced by: Ayumi Kida
Machine used: Brocken Gigant, Brocken Gigant Black Special (WGP, anime only), Brocken Gigant Black Metallic (Return Racers)
- Aesop Amnesia: Gen realizes he can win without using battle parts, but he's back to his Ax-Crazy personality in the very next episode.
- Ax-Crazy: Gen is always eager to destroy his opponents' cars, and many times goes out of his way to do so.
- Stupid Evil: Many times Gen goes out of his way to destroy his opponents' cars, even when just keep racing normally and going forward would be a better strategy.
- Sweet Tooth: Often seeing holding a lollipop.
Rei Hijikata
Rei Hijikata
Voiced by: Satoko Kito
Machine used: Ray Stinger
- Kick the Dog: One of the first things he does after getting Ray Stinger from Professor Oogami is destroying Gou's Victory Magnum to a point where it's not possible to repair it.
- Redemption Equals Affliction: Redeeming himself makes Rei lose the Japan Cup in the last episode, as forcibly removing Ray Stinger's spear makes it lose balance and fly out of the course in the end.
- Ring of Power: He uses one to control Ray Stinger
R
R
Voiced by: Arisa Ando
Machine used: Dragon Delta (anime)
- The Ace: She's America's Mini 4WD champion.
- Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Has no trouble telling Gen that he's a weak racer, and mocking both Gen and the Proto Saber Squad for having to rely on each other in order to win. But for all of her arrogance, the truth is that she can actually back it up: in the first time we see her race, in the Big Challenge, she gets second place without any help.
- Bifauxnen: In the first episode she appears in, many characters mistake her for a boy.
- Compressed Hair: Her long blonde hair remains hidden under her cap until she reveals her identity to J.
- Long-Lost Relative: She is J's older sister and for years everyone believed she was dead after a plane crash.
- Smurfette Principle: The only female racer to qualify to the Super Great Japan Cup.

Professor Tsuchiya
Voiced by: Masashi Ebara
- Combat Commentator: Frequently takes this role during official races.

Mini 4 Fighter/Takeshi Sugiyama
Voiced by: Showtaro Morikubo

Professor Oogami
Professor Oogami
Voiced by: Ryūzaburō Ōtomo
- Elaborate Underground Base: His laboratory is one, located around a volcano.
- Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: He can't understand the concept of sportsmanship. Particularly evident when, at the Tokichi Cup, he's dumbfounded when the racers that got their machines destroyed by J start cheering him up when he's finishing the race after his Heel–Face Turn.
- Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: He makes the Mini 4WD Association create the Big Challenge right before the Japan Cup so he can have more of his battle machines competing. His plan is successful in part, as Gen's Brocken G gets third place in this race and R's Dragon Delta gets second.
- Weaponized Car: Most (if not all) Mini 4WD machines created by Oogami are this.
