Brainwashed And Crazy / Fan Works

Go To

Batman

  • In Dance with the Demons, Kobra brainwashes King Faraday - via a dip in a Lazarus Pit - into leading Batman and the Outsiders into a trap.

Crossovers

  • Murakumo Units in BlazBlue Alternative: Remnant are programmed from their earliest stages of development to kill any "rogue units" they encounter. In Chapter 39, this results in Noel and Penny trying to kill each other. Though Penny is able to fight against her programming, Noel succumbs and turns into an emotionless killing machine that would have killed Penny and Ruby had the latter not gotten through to her.
  • Child of the Storm has a lot of telepaths and villains who dabble in other forms of mind control, so this happens semi-frequently.
    • The Winter Soldier a.k.a. Bucky Barnes, though he steadily breaks through the control and conditioning... before being brainwashed again. It's indicated that this was a semi-regular occurrence throughout his time as the Winter Soldier, though his partnership (and relationship) with Natasha accelerated it. Eventually, with the help of Doctor Strange, he breaks free completely at the end of the first book.
    • The sequel has the Red Son, the Winter Soldier's Superior Successor, appear to be this - specifically, Harry. As it turns out, he's actually an Empty Shell, with Harry's mind having been removed and hidden by Maddie.
    • Peter Parker, also in the sequel, spends the first half of the Bloody Hell arc as this, as a Dhampyr of the Grey Court, one of Dracula's minions. Harry breaks his sire's telepathic control, though it is reasserted by Dracula, and its further restoration is a constant risk, triggering the Crazy Enough to Work plan to cure him and break the link with a goblet of Harry's blood.
  • The Darth Vader Saga has Jason, Kimberly, Katherine, Karone and Ryan get turned into The Psycho Rangers along with Tommy, Hunter and Blake turning into evil Rangers for the villains. This is due to all of them having been evil at some point of time, as the villains wanted to rewake that evil.
  • Digimon Adventure: Side Order: Marina is possessed by Order, with Wormmon (evolved into Stingmon) fighting alongside Marina Agitando. Sarah and Hawkmon also end up being antagonists in chapter 2 as part of the Parallel Canon fight, with Eight making an even more explicit effort to try and free them from mind control rather than splat them. The end of chapter 3 reveals that Patamon/Angemon has also suffered this fate, becoming effectively Order's bodyguard.
  • Equestria Girls: A Fairly Odd Friendship: The Dazzlings, as per canon, are capable of doing this once they've tricked Timmy into wishing their magic back. They proceed to use it on him and the fairies.
  • Infinity Crisis:
    • Happens in Gamma Relations when Captain Marvel briefly falls under the Leader's control and attacks Iron Man and War Machine.
    • A downplayed example in Powers and Marvels: the Mandarin uses his mento ring to take control of Kimberly's mind, but he 'just' threatens to make her kill herself unless the other Rangers hand over their power coins.
  • Inky Future:
    • Callie, like in canon, and she still is a sleeper agent for Octavio even after regaining her senses, Ethan and Ayane/Agents 3 & 4 when the Telephone partially sanitizes them, and Zero twice over from both partial sanitization and the "Robot Destruction Program" that would've become the Maverick Virus.
    • At the end of the "Hostile Takeover" arc, Callie successfully tricks Marie into letting her put a pair of hypnoshades on her, enabling her to use it and a hypnotic tape to begin brainwashing Marie into another of Octavio's sleeper agents as preparation for a long-term plot.
  • Victor in Kaleidoscope gets a dose of this courtesy of Eros, a Monster from Beyond the Veil equipped with Yuuri's skillset/physical attributes and none of the humanity. He gets better via a Tap on the Head.
  • Last Child of Krypton: It turns out that Kaworu is this when he transforms into Black Adam, courtesy of a Mister Mind Expy. Shinji manages to resolve the situation with some well placed heat-vision.
  • The Night Unfurls:
  • In Origin Story, Hydra dosed Carol Danvers and other characters with the Puppet Master's mind-control compound.
  • In the climax of Paper Mario X 2, shortly after taking over Peach's body, the Shadow Queen brainwashes Zelda and Amy to be on her side and fight their friends. The others (especially Link) were not happy by this.
Link: It's one thing to possess one girl, but three is definitely crossing the line!
  • In the Magical Girl Crisis Crossover Shattered Skies: The Morning Lights, at least one person from each of the five Magical Girl universes has been brainwashed into serving Dead End, including Sailor Uranus, twenty of the Clow/Sakura Cards, Cure Moonlight, and the Wolkenritter. The Madokaverse is the one exception: Mami and Kyoko are turned into near-mindless Hybrid-Witches and thus can't be said to be truly brainwashed, and Sayaka joins Dead End willingly to get revenge on Homura. Her revenge plot is later revealed to be an act, as she was actually The Mole the entire time.
  • All of the ghosts in Sweetie's Mansion are under the control of Specter Yield including the ghosts of the Mane cast. All of them, save for Ghost!Fluttershy, are happy to carry out the order to capture or kill Sweetie Belle to become a ghost, until they are brought back to normal.
  • Time Fixers: Nicktoons of the Future:
    • Happens to SpongeTron twice throughout the series. Once by Plankton in "Virus Breakdown" by implanting a virus in his systems. Then by Professor Calamitous in "Clash of the Bots", using a sort of mind-control crown.
    • Happens to Maxwell in "Future Tensed" by Future Eustace Strych via implanting fake memories in his mind that make him believe his friends and family never cared about him.

Danganronpa

  • Graduate Meeting of Mutual Killing implies that Nebulous Evil Organization Diavolos Avante uses an early version of the Junko Enoshima AI to brainwash the Main Board members. The exact purpose is unclear for now, but it's hinted that it may be to break down any moral inconveniences the Board Members may have.

DC Universe

  • In An Interdimensional Meet, Jeremiah Danvers is brainwashed to regard all Kryptonians as enemies and mutated into the Arrowverse equivalent of Doomsday, forcing Supergirl, the Flash and the Martian Manhunter to join forces to stop him.

Disgaea

  • The Curse of Blood has the mother of Laharl controlled by original character, Milady. Later on a previously killed Laharl becomes mind-controlled as well.

Disney Animated Canon

  • In Crowns of the Kingdom this happens to King Louie and his servants, who are brainwashed by the Dispirations.

Girls und Panzer

  • Erika the Radical: Season 2 - Episode 11, we have Fraulein Black - a dark, Yandere, sadistic, twisted parody of what was once the sweet, mild-mannered, soft-spoken girl called Orange Pekoe after Elena was done with her "re-conditioning". Despite the horrifying implications of the previous sentence, this event is still played for laughs.

Godzilla

  • Abraxas (Hrodvitnon): It's explicitly stated that when non-Alpha Titans hear an Alpha's call, they're compelled by instinct with little willpower of their own to obey the caller, as an explanation of why many of the Titans who despise Ghidorah in this fic followed its commands to destroy the planet in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). The Titans on Godzilla and Mothra's side nearly fall under Ghidorah's sway again when it lets out an Alpha Call, but thanks to Monster X, Ghidorah is cut off mid-call and the affected Titans shake the effect off before it can take hold.

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi / The Untamed

  • In The Beast Of Gusu, the Wen Sect develop a drug that can make shifters lose their humanity (losing control of their shifts and having no recollection of it), thus making them easy to control and to use in their army. Wei Wuxian is affected by it twice: the first time he’s lucky enough to have been with Lan Wangji, the second time he received a stronger dose and ran away.

Harry Potter

  • Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality:
    • In Chapter 51 and Chapter 52, Quirrell tells Harry that Bellatrix Black only served Voldemort because she ended up this way after being Mind Raped (and also raped in the literal sense, as Voldemort let the Lestrange brothers have their way with her). In chapter 108, a character claims that she was already crazy before Voldemort got to her, though.
    • In Chapter 77, Hat-and-Cloak puts Hermione through extended interrogation and manipulation (and possibly false-memory charms followed by obliviation) to convince her that someone she had been becoming friends with betrayed her. ** In Chapter 78, she attacks him, and off camera before Chapter 79 the trope is subverted when she must be memory charmed again to falsely believe she tried to kill Draco Malfoy.
    • Chapter 104 reveals that Professor Sprout had been serving as Voldemort's (presumably brainwashed) patsy.

Invader Zim

Jackie Chan Adventures

  • Jackie Chan Adventures: Olympian Journey: Aphrodite's essence gives its bearer the ability to make others into lovesick slaves, by means of making them ingest magical chocolates.
  • Queen of All Oni: During the second half of the story, Jade abducts Viper and force feeds her Ikazuki's chi, transforming her into the Shadowkhan General Hebi, who's conditioned to be utterly loyal to Jade.

Jak and Daxter

  • In Torque (Jak and Daxter), after the experiments and torture Jak has become the loyal Dark Warrior for Praxis and will attack anyone the Baron wants him to.

Kill la Kill

  • From Maim de Maim: Ryuuko and Senketsu. Through some help, they get better.
    • Izanami Nishimura, the fiance of Satsuki's late ex-boyfriend Masanori Kakinomoto, is also this in the second half of the fic and is convinced by Dr. Richard Batty that Satsuki killed her lover out of jealousy.

The Legend of Spyro

  • Pure Light: It's strongly implied, though not yet proven, that the purple dragons turn evil not of their own volition (in Spyro's case, his fall happened literally overnight), but because something is influencing them.

The Lion King (1994)

Marvel Universe

  • In A Prize for Three Empires, an alien spirit known as Zennan mind-controls Wolverine into attacking Carol Danvers.
Wolverine had lashed out with his six claws of bone and torn three gashes in Carol Danvers's stomach.
For a nanosecond, she wondered why he had done it. He must, some rational, stand-apart portion of her mind said, be under outside control. Logan was a bosom friend of hers from before she had even gone to work at NASA.

Mega Man

Merlin (2008)

  • "Dragonfasting" reveals that Morgana’s turn to evil was caused by a complex spell cast by Morgause while she was away. Such spells would normally have been broken with the death of the caster, but Morgause bound the spell to Morgana's life-force so that it remained even after her demise, which led to the spell now having an increasingly negative effect on Morgana’s sanity. When Aithusa helps break the spell, Morgana takes a few hours to remember everything that she’s done since she was originally abducted by Morgause, and experiences various nightmares of her activities during that time.

Miraculous Ladybug

  • Break it down, Butterfly: Paon Bleu's first power "Golden Eye", allowing her to control civilians (the number of civilians at a time making it harder to maintain).
  • There's More Magic Out There: Mireille, out of fear that Aurore would expose her as an Incubus, brainwashed the other staff at KidsTV and sent them to attack the Mystery Gang. She later used her powers on Alix, making her think that Mireille is her only friend and that the others are their enemies, which she goes out to destroy.
  • Downplayed in Unmasker Unleashed. While she has been akumatized, Cat Noir notes that Unmasker’s behavior was how Marinette used to act until recently and that she is maintaining a great amount of herself, compared to other akumatized victims.

My-HiME

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

  • In Breathers For Applejack, an old nag puts a curse on Applejack which turns the entire town of Ponyville into an oppressive den of crazy ponies looking for Applejack.
  • Played with in Frigid Winds and Burning Hearts: Luna acknowledges that her long imprisonment drove her mad, but Celestia messing with her mind to make her assume the role of Nightmare Moon didn't help, either.
  • The Immortal Game: Rainbow Dash spends the first portion of the story controlled by a Mind Rape spell called the Insanity, which forces her to obey Nihilus. She's eventually able to break free thanks to help from Fluttershy's Stare.
  • Mirror's Image: Princess Celestia, of all ponies, thanks to the previous Changeling Queen being a Knight Templar Parent. Usually whenever something triggers it, she suddenly enters an Unstoppable Rage and tries to petrify whoever's standing in front of her. Like say, Twilight Sparkle. Even worse, any attempt to remove the brainwashing also triggers it, which is bad news for one unfortunate doctor (though he manages to avoid being turned to stone).
    • Later on, Prince Blueblood thinks this is what's happened to everypony else, and refuses to believe otherwise. It doesn't end well.
  • In Past Sins, Twilight Sparkle has raised Nyx like a daughter, but eventually Spell Nexus blesses her in order to get her to attack her...
  • In the MLP AU story Rainbooms and Royalty, Shining Armor, two of his pegasus guards, and Ditzy Doo/Derpy Hooves are all corrupted into Nightmare Moon's servants — the former as her Dragon, the latter three as the first Shadowbolts.

Naruto

  • Thanks to Danzo, this happens to Hinata in Naruto: Asunder. In her case however she channels the crazy (along with lust) to one person and only one person: Naruto.

NieR

  • In Tower of Babel Weiss is brainwashed, and Nier and his team are forced to fight him.

One Piece

  • A Gamer In South Blue: 'Red Witch' Mira-jane has powers that allow her to brainwash sea kings to do her bidding. Though thought to be a Devil Fruit power, it's actually tied to a magic sword she carries...which is knocked into the ocean in the final battle.

Pokémon

  • Pokéumans: Minions of Pokextinction are fanatically loyal to Mr. X and his ideals, thanks to a little mind control.
  • In We Are All Pokémon Trainers:
    • Missingno and 'M end up possessing numerous beings and having them attack the proto-J-Team during the J-Team Assemble Saga.
    • What happens what Pokémon are Mind Raped into becoming Shadow Pokémon.

Power Rangers

  • In the Power Rangers: Dino Thunder fic "Thunder Struck Revised", Elsa is revealed to be a brainwashed Kimberly Hart, the original Pink Ranger. According to Kimberly, she initially the secretary to Anton Mercer's lawyer, and he kept her and Tommy out of contact after he learned about their history to avoid any awkwardness. After Mercer became Mesogog, he sought out Kimberly and brainwashed her to turn her into Elsa, enjoying the irony of Tommy Oliver forced to fight the woman he loved.

Real-Person Fic

  • Averted in With Strings Attached; Bayanis orders the ensorcelled Paul to go kill the others, but whoops, it turns out he's been faking it all along and ties her up instead.
    • Unfortunately played straight in The Keys Stand Alone: The Soft World, when a brainwashed Ringo throws John off the mesa.

Street Sharks

  • Street Sharks Redux has this happen to Slammu. The exact mechanics of the mechanism used for the job are never explained, but given the mention of its prototype rendering a test subject braindead, it seems to be a more... direct form of mind control.

Super Mario Bros.

Touhou Project

Tiger & Bunny

Yu-Gi-Oh!

  • Fallen King has Yami Bakura brainwash Tea to attack Joey and Tristan, thanks to the Change of Heart card.
