    Main Story
  • The reveal at the beginning that there are more surviving Victors than just the seven from the books.
  • Orchus winning the Games with a simple shove that sends the Ax-Crazy District 4 girl tumbling into a pit full of stakes.
  • Orchus escaping District 11 without anyone noticing, and getting out from under the Capitol's thumb.
  • Wheaton volunteering for the Games to try and win a pardon for his rebel father.
  • Wheaton winning a 3-1 fight with the use of his sickle.
  • Most of Platinum's duels in his games.
  • During Platinum's games, the boy form District 3 killing an early Career by lighting a bridge he was on on fire.
  • Tiberius killing Gaius as he tries to rape Minnie, with an observing Ahenonbarbus simply noting in approval that Tiberius well do as the tribute.
  • Jules killing one of Ahenobarbus' tributes with a thrown ax in a Hall of Mirrors with his eyes closed.
  • Jules killing a peacekeeper with a swung chair at the age of 84 during the Mockingjay Rebellion.
  • The bombing of the original arena in an attempt to end the Games.
  • Seaward and Waverly's early dominance of the water arena and fighting off five other tributes.
  • The description of how Gleam won using his knife-throwing and climbing skills taught by his circus performer parents.
  • Orchus snatching a knife being thrown at an avox out of mid-air.
  • Platinum slamming Seaward against the wall for giving Gleam morphling.
  • Mags luring the alliance pursuing her into a trap and then ranting at the sky about the Always Male assumptions of the Victors that was referenced in the last episode.
  • Woof throwing a drink in Brutus' face after catching the Career Victor joking about the death of his tribute.
  • Martinus' efforts to raise sponsor money for Vera are pretty impressive, and just for a while appearing as though he may be able to make a Capitol kid really re-evaluate the Games, despite his Ignored Epiphany.
  • Vera killing a promising Career tribute in an ambush while clad in camouflage.
  • Gates making a weather drone out of scratch to cause a storm that wipes out the other tributes.
  • Boudicca destroying the slave market and liberating the prisoners in her first act as de facto ruler of District 2.
  • Granyte becoming the Ur-Example of volunteering for the Hunger Games and winning, thus making District 2 the first district with back to back Victors
  • Manannan winning his games in arguably the worst place for a District 4 tribute, a Lethal Lava Land of a burning caldera, with specific note being given to him throwing District 2 into a pit of fire.
  • In the present, Johanna foiling the attempt on Katniss's life.
  • Wren, for taking on the Careers with just one ally and then, refusing to end a Mexican Standoff which is likely to result in a Mutual Kill, due to feeling that "Anyone but a career" should win.
  • Evelyn winning the 23rd Hunger Games with a snake placed in a strategic area and a bear trap that takes out a fairly sadistic Career.
  • Virtus single-handedly killing six tributes who attack him in a matter of seconds during the opening bloodbath.
  • Virtus spending days clinging to a rock to avoid being washed out to sea, then managing to swim back to shore and still win the games.
  • While their positive Character Development is a long way off, it's easy to root for the District 10 barflies when, as one, they turn and spit on the ground when District 2's 1st Quarter Quell volunteers take the stage.
  • Cora's fight with the "Criminal" alliance during the First Quarter Quell.
  • Emrys burning down half of his arena with fire bombs, then, with a slashed leg and broken fingers, still defeating the last Career standing with some thrown embers and the stab of a knife.
  • Justus defying Boudicca asking how the Games can be considered justice and honorable. Unfortunately, it doesn't last.
  • Chevy jumping onboard the train and then taking control of it to run down the Careers. Yes, the Gamemakers did deliberately give him an advantage, but it was an advantage not just anyone could have put to good use. invoked
  • Ben drugging his Career allies and then cutting them down. Combat Pragmatist indeed.
  • Ben killing a pack of wolves.
  • The last two tributes Ben faced deserve a little credit for almost killing him with a dropped rock and thrown axe respectively.
  • Seeder's Victory by Endurance. To elaborate, she held the record for the longest Hunger Games in history, all without making any kills and surviving for weeks without any food after her meager supply of crackers ran out.
  • Seeder deciding to Face Death with Dignity even when given a chance to run by Enobaria (who gets some credit for giving Seeder that chance in spite of the expectations the Capitol has of her), and Cecelia for attacking Enobaria and Brutus as they close in on Seeder.
  • Elena and Danny's Big Damn Kiss before she's reaped, no longer hiding their Star-Crossed Lovers secret.
  • Elena gets two moments in the arena: defeating her racist District partner but then sparing him, and her final fight with the better armed District 12 boy.
    • Elena and Danny's relationship helps set up the gradual repairing of relationships between the two rival races of Anasazi and Settlers in District 10 to the point by Roan's games any people still regarded as racists are seen as racist and oudated grandparents.
  • An old, drug-addicted Elena finding the passion to try and help Katniss and Peeta, and providing the distraction which lets Beetee grab the wire needed for his plan.
  • An elderly Bovina taking up sky-diving in the present day.
  • Cerulea trusting her gut and avoiding the Alliance that would have killed her.
    • And on a related note, the District 2 tributes and the girl from 1 managing to murder not one but two other Career tributes who'd both scored 11s and do so before the two even have a chance to fight back.
    • Those two tributes scoring Double Elevens, apparently for the first time in Games history was also quite impressive, even if it didn't amount to much in the end.
  • Cerulea taking on the Careers with a snare, a net and a bow and arrow and killing one and wounding another before retreating, right as Boudicca is taunting Mags about the supposed inferiority of the District 4 tributes.
  • Snow gets a chapters-wide villainous one with his entire long game to become president. It is insanely well-thought out and ten times more impressive than anything he actually manages while he's the president.
    • Through gaslighting, he makes it seem like a victor is insane in order to set her up as a scapegoat while he poisons hundreds of Capitolians and plays the hero by killing her, getting him promoted through scores of emptied positions.
    • He implicitly spends the better part of a decade slowly poisoning the (immensely hateable) President Lucius right under the nose of the entire nation, filling up the president's wine glass on live television as the president breaks into coughing fits without anyone being the wiser.
    • Once Lucius finally dies, Snow makes no overtures for the presidency, letting all of the stronger candidates wipe out or weaken each other as they fight for the presidency, and even then he only ends up on a council of seven people sharing the power for a few years.
    • Rather than push out the rest of the Council himself, he just waits until an inevitable assassination and then tricks Mags into doing the leg work of investigating and exposing it, kicking off a brief civil war in the Capitol which actually gets the rest of the surviving councilors to give Snow sole leadership, with there being nothing that will make the populace in general assume that he's spent years manipulating and killing people for that job.
  • Barty managing to make his knife curve in mid-air during a fight.
  • An eight-year-old Barty taking on an alley dog that was about to attack a little kid, while armed just with a butter knife.
  • Boudicca's "The Reason You Suck" Speech to Barty's abusive stepfather.
  • Dido's games aren't given too much focus, but its mentioned she was abandoned by her Alliance, suffered multiple mutt attacks, dehydration and starvation and was still unafraid to shout out if that was all they had.
  • Nolan forming a Badass Crew/Five-Man Band (including a Career defector) which has one of the most memorable final showdowns in the story.
  • Eamon posing as an avox to sneak up behind the game makers for his training session.
  • Jade's Sherlock Scan about why Esther's death wasn't suicide.
  • Ermine's revenge against the Girl Posse that killed Esther.
  • Maeve using her Stealth Expert skills first to hide from carnivores mutts in a very crazed arena, and then to follow her last surviving opponent to ambush him from behind.
  • The simple fact that the District 10 tributes in Maeve's games try to help each other reach the antidote to the poison they ingested, even though it kills them.
  • Every kill Chaff makes against the Careers, as well as cauterizing his own severed hand without a scream after one such kill.
  • Beetee's girl during Chaff's Games being Crazy-Prepared, and doing all the right things (avoiding the center of the Cornucopia, being willing to abandon he supplies when she gets singled out anyway) even though it doesn't save her.
  • Bovina, Nolan and Vera's blow-ups when they lose their tributes, and the simple hate for the Games they're expressing.
  • The last stand of the District 7 tributes in Chaff's games. They going against five Careers and still manage to last for several minutes.
  • Chaff's District partner choosing to just give up and die, partially because of the isolation but partially to keep from having to kill anyone and betraying her principals, or diverting resources away from her District partner and his chances of winning.
  • Ermine communicating with her tribute in Chaff's Games by sending her running shoes as a message to get out of there and run. Unfortunately, she and her ally wind up in an enclosed area with Chaff.
  • Matthias being the only tribute to realize what Snow really wants the Quell tributes to do is impressive. That it leads him to try and kill Katniss is less impressive, but the implication that he hoped doing so would end the Quell and save everyone else win him some credit.
  • Brilliance somehow won his Games despite having been blinded earlier in them.
  • Mags bringing Nolan and the District 1 rebels together, beginning to organize the Rebellion, with Luxe's Tranquil Fury speech to Nolan about how District 1 has it just as bad as anywhere else (and how Nolan had better not call Luxe or Plat Career ever again) as a highlight.
  • Brutus tearing off a crocodile mutts jaws with his bare hands, and later killing three giant spider mutts (also bare handed) despite having a fear of spiders and having a lot of venom running through him at the time.
  • Brutus tying the nearly half-century long Kill Tally record set by Ahenobarbus, including taking out all five of his former allies in a single fight.
  • Brutus volunteering to save Lupus (whom he'd mentored), but pretending it's out of a simple desire to kill again for the camera's sake.
  • Jade standing up to Coin during her Kangaroo Court trial, despite knowing the consequences.
  • Jade shooting one of the tributes in her arena through the blinding fog. It's ranked a "top ten" moment in terms of arena kills and is probably difficult to replicate in real life.
  • Bovina's Big Damn Heroes moment to be a Character Witness for Jade. It's also implied to be an Offscreen Momentof Awesome for Plutarch as well, who was able to arrange her appearance under Coin's thumb.
  • Watts Jawofsky, a District 5 boy who volunteered for his thirteen-year-old brother, the last tribute to do so before Katniss. As Katniss mentions during the trilogy, volunteering in a not-so-wealthy district is seen as "sheer suicide".
  • Birch McCallan, one of the 2nd Quarter Quell Tributes. In a similar note to the 1st Quarter Quell tributes from his district with amusing stunts and wanting meaningful deaths, he moons the entire nation on live television.
  • Boudicca was once approached by a girl who wanted to take the Tribute Trials without any prior training in order to get away from her abusive father. The girl made it to the final trial, the Trial of Blood, (something less than half of the kids who spend a full eight years of Training from Hell accomplish) before being unable to kill her assigned victim. An impressed Boudicca gives her a job working at the Institute. Doubles as a heartwarming moment.
  • Lyme managing to fool Boudicca into thinking she isn't a rebel despite how she grew up in a rebel village, and then winning the Games just to become The Mole and reach out to the other Districts to finally link the District 2 rebels up to them.
  • Wiress running the gauntlet to the Cornucopia and escaping with her supplies, considering that District Three tributes typically don't survive the bloodbath.
  • Wiress making first a dam, and then a trebuchet out of just woodwork in order to win her games.
  • It's a small moment, but the outlier in Halibut's games (described as "runty" by some of the other Careers) trying to go after two Careers with a knife in each hand before Halibut saw the sun glint off his knives.
  • Halibut poisoning one of his allies, then getting another to attack the silhouette of a paper sack full of apples while he attacks her from behind.
  • While she does fall in another of his traps a second later the District 1 girl cuts her way out of the net Halibut dropped on her.
  • Halibut fighting Priam and Liane at the same time, and the Pre-Mortem One-Liner at the end after he's about to finish off a speared Priam.
Priam: Halibut. Stupid name... for a... Victor.
Halibut: Better than yours. (brings down his harpoon)
  • Mitt's Victory by Endurance manages to to be on par with Seeder's due to the sheer coldness of the antarctic tundra arena.
  • Connor avenging his District partner during the bloodbath with a thrown rock.
  • The District 6 girl in Connor's games stabbing an Eagle Mutt through the eye.
  • Connor winning a fight against the District 2 boy with his brand new double-bladed axe, while he has a broken leg.
  • Roan's knife fight against the last two Careers standing.
  • Plutarch's Executive Meddling to ensure that Roan can't kill Katniss in the arena, as well as Bovina washing her hands of her loyalist, bigoted tribute.
  • Just about everything with Circe. Poisoning fruit, strangling the much bigger District 1 boy then when she cannot kill him face to face finish him off with a fire that she makes turn into oddly colored smoke with some thrown chemicals.
  • Circe's Escort, Carpathia, doing such a good job rallying funds and support for her.
  • The Reveal when Johanna shows just what she can really do.
  • Jade telling off the Capitol investigator investigating Crystal's suicide.
  • Enobaria being broken out of prison just when she was Driven to Suicide.
  • It's mentioned that there was a Distinct 9 conspiracy to skim grain off the top of sacks and distribute it among the starving District.
  • Gloss and Cashmere somehow arranging for the dam explosion which let Annie win.
  • Cashmere's Battle of Wits with Beetee and offering to die for the Rebellion, as well as her Motive Rant against Luster and Does This Remind You of Anything? discussion about why "Rome" fell apart when she's clearly also referring to The Capitol.
    • Also, Beetee has apparently been able to smuggle fugitives from other Districts into 3 undetected.
  • The Revenge of Finnick Odair, where he airs every dirty Capitol secret and utterly breaks their illusions of moral superiority, while causing quite a bit of rioting and infrastructure damage.
    • Roused to action by Finnick's revelation, a mob of Capitol citizens actually charge at Snow's mansion, demanding justice, before being gunned down or sent running by the president's heavily armed bodyguards.
  • Song's victory. She not only trains for the games without the aid of the DAEYD, but she also beats Luster's cadets and wins without the aid of any Victor mentoring nor sponsorship packages.
  • Song and her ally spending three days pursuing Titus the cannibal despite the number of cuts they have. Most tributes would be running away from Titus as seen in many other fics involving him, but pursuing him isn't that common.
    • For that matter, Titus avoiding Song and her ally.
  • Ben coming out of retirement to mentor Abram.
  • Abram's battle with the boy from District 4. Abram scored a 3 in training, only got one (accidental) kill before then and has been surviving off of cactus juice. The Career is a trained killer armed with a harpoon. But Abram wins armed with just improvised bolas (stones wrapped up in his shirt).
  • Abram's transition from Formerly Fat to Frontline General in the Mockingjay Rebellion.
  • Cotton's traps winning her the games without her having to set eyes on another opponent.
  • The Heel–Face Turn of Dido, Silk, Honorius and Virtus by staying back to hold off Capitolian forces from capturing the rebel Victors.
  • Cotton, Abram and Haymtich trying to fight through the capitol and save the other Victors.
  • Lupus furiously smashing the contents of the Victor's Village mansion forced on him.
  • The rescue mission for Katniss but specifically:
  • Katniss and Boudicca talking things through and finally getting Boudicca to have a Heel Realization.

    The Lumberjack and the Tree-Elf
  • In the backstory, Mayor Lourdes organizing the hunting expedition in defiance of the Capitol to keep the District fed over the winter and then managing to convince the majority of the Capitol that it was an act of loyalty in order to ensure that they'd be strong enough to continue doing the Capitol's work.
  • When Blight's father volunteers him against his will, Mayor Lourdes senses something is wrong and tries to stop it before Eamon quickly confirms Blight as the tribute.
  • The reveal of Blight and Charlie's Tribute Parade costumes.
  • Blight coming out during the Interviews.
  • Blight using the "gifts" that Eamon sends him (a razor and a bottle of white liquor) to save himself twice. First by using the white liquor to make a firebomb that incinerates the tracker jackers chasing him, then by using the razor to cut himself free after the career pack ties him up.
  • Charlie fighting off some rat mutations that attack her Alliance.
  • Just about any time Plautia stands up to the other Careers.
  • Mack shaming most of District 7 by revealing the truth of Blight's mother's departure - she hadn't run off with a Peacekeeper, she'd been forced into it, capping it off with a simple "The Reason You Suck" Speech. The truth shames almost everyone present, especially Burgen, Abel, and Jonel. Shortly after that, Jason rallies the District to help Blight out.
  • Vera's speech to Blight about how he can win.
  • Blight deflecting some thrown knives with just his quarterstaff.
  • Blight summoning mutts to attack the Careers (who'd just sadistically tortured Devon to death while forcing Blight to watch, and killed one of their number just for standing up to them) by screaming. The mutts promptly rip apart three of them, and send the last two running.
  • Shortly after that, Blight taming the worst of the mutts, and naming it after one of his abusive brothers.
  • Charlie dragging Romani from District 4 off the Ferris Wheel with her.
  • Blight finishing off a Not Quite Dead Link.
  • Blight tricking Snow into sending Mayor Lourde's avoxed wife back to the District (he'd intended to bring his mother but she declined) through Exact Words by making Snow think he wanted to bring Eamon back to take revenge on him.
  • Blight's simple "The Reason You Suck" Speech to his abusive father, revealing that his mother could have come back but didn't want to see him.
  • Blight's The Dead Have Names monologue while watching his Games recap.
  • District 7 Escort, Tutti Marble, resigning in protest rather than reap Blight or any of the other Victors she's known for so long.

    Fall Into the River
  • Spindella's Motivational Lie to make Cecelia determined to win.
  • Cecelia's Sherlock Scan of the other tributes.
  • Cecelia blowing up two other tributes (including a Smug Snake rapist) by throwing her boots to set off the mines next to their pedestals.
  • Blight claiming to have suggested Cecelia blow up the mines to save her and Cora from official punishment.
  • Abundance from 11 wounding a Career with a thrown spear in the bloodbath.
  • Cecelia causing an avalanche that kills one Career and almost another.
  • Cecelia's partner, Loomer, rescuing her from a cave in by lifting the boulder that buried her.
  • The chase where the District 9 girl almost escapes before Ferrus from 2 catches up, leaping from rock to rock.
  • Abundance refusing sponsor gifts to avoid being beholden to the Capitol.
  • Cecelia first sparing the life of Rowenna when she has every reason not to (something she makes very clear to Rowena) and then finish her off when Rowena tries to stab her in the back.
  • The arguments on behalf of both Cecelia and Andromache as the rebels weigh who to support.
  • Jason's confrontation with Abel "The Skinner".
  • Paylor using her newfound knowledge on the atomic bombing of Hiroshima to deduce District 13 shouldn't still be a nuclear wasteland after the Capitol bombed in the First Rebellion and might be habitable.
  • The whole breakup of the Career Alliance scene. Gillard staying to fight while getting his District partner to run, and then surviving being thrown off a cliff, and then the duel between Ferrus and Pomponia.
  • Cecelia and Andromache teaming up against Ferrus.
  • Cora yelling the names of her tributes at Snow while being tortured.
  • Cora's last words to Snow, which gets a visible reaction out of him. Bonus points in that they're a Call-Back to Victoria (Cecelia's Split Personality, a Victor that Cora mentored) calling Rowenna a "silly little bird" during her Games.
"That's where you're wrong, silly little bird. That's why you will not win."

    The Bonds of Blood
  • Enobaria's Roaring Rampage of Revenge against the Reavers, which causes her to be selected for the Hunger Games without taking a single one of the Trials.
  • Kerry going out on her own terms with a dropped ball.
  • Enobaria forcing the others to give Hera a fair fight, and then personally giving her that fight and winning, albeit just barely.
  • Genner almost escaping from the Careers by coming himself in oil so they can't get a good grip on him.
  • Genner and Naomi being Defiant Captives.
  • Codey taking out Tiller with a fire trap.
  • Enobaria breaking free from being tortured by Codey and ripping his throat out.
  • Enobaria tricking Citrine and Orion into bisecting each other with a dodge at just the right time.
  • The appearance of an apparent seer with genuine powers among the people of District 11 who has foretold the battle with the Reavers.
  • Enobaria's final battle with The Speaker.

    Quell
  • Cora, knowing she'll be voted into the Quell, goading people into hitting her for "practice".
  • The District 11 kids volunteering just as a "screw you" to the Capitol in defiance of the Games. The boy even goes through with it despite having a personal beef with the kid. As the narration notes, when their District realizes what they're doing, "for the first time in a quarter-of-a-century, the cheers are real".
  • While many of the reapings come across as unfair and sad, there are others (the girl from 9, the boys from 6 and 8) that make it easy to cheer on the district for getting rid of those people.

    Secrets
  • The simple reveal that Thisbe died trying to kill Snow.
  • Wonder's attempts to poison Luster.
  • Virtus and Justus rebelling in subtle, personal ways by respectively hawking their district tokens and breaking up Capitol marriages.
  • Circe organizing a Great Escape for her people that kicks off the Rebellion.
  • Maeve using her drug dealers as an intelligence network.

    Arrow
  • District 1:
  • District 2: Lyme and Abram tearing into the peacekeepers and trainees who slaughtered most of Lyme's village, with Abram impaling one on a staircase and Lyme ripping another throat out with her teeth.
  • District 3's Flawless Victory against their peacekeepers by retreating to bunkers and releasing decades of weapons and traps.
  • District 4:
    • The parents of the District 4 girl who Katniss killed kicking off the District Rebellion by launching a suicide attack, stabbing multiple Capitol representatives on live television before being shot.
    • The head of District 4's community home protecting her charges with a shotgun and a homemade slingshot.
    • The Deputy Head Peacekeeper giving Mags' sister a list of potential defectors in response to the Quell reaping, allowing them to seize the armory.
    • Halibut killing half a dozen Peacekeepers, despite being stabbed thirty times.
    • District 4 rebels liberating Mags' body from the Capitol as the war wages on and bringing it home to give her a Viking Funeral as according to local funerary customs.
  • District 5:
    • When the Campers of District 5 flee the District, quite a few Peacekeepers pursue after them and are never heard from again.
    • The children of District 5 fighting back, first with just ambushes in the night (drownings, garroting, dropped rocks, etc.) then onto full-blown cyber attacks and poisonings of key officials.
    • The Heel–Face Turn of the District 5 Peacekeepers when they're ordered to execute every tenth child in the District by Romulus Thread, who is literally torn apart by their gunfire.
    • The District children preparing to Face Death with Dignity, holding hands when they think their going to die.
  • The uprising against the warlord gangs of District 6.
  • District 7:
    • Capitol Escort Tutti Marble fighting alongside the District 7 rebels with a slingshot.
    • Connor rescuing five people form a burning building before severing his own arm to escape himself when he's trapped under flaming rubble, and then returning to the front lines, learning how to shoot a rifle with one arm.
    • The conclusion of the Battle of District 7, when the surrounded Rebel leaders holed up in Good-Guy Bar the Tav get reinforcements when what appears to be the vengeful ghosts of their dead Victors and tributes attacks the Peacekeepers on horse back but turns out to be a "Scooby-Doo" Hoax by the rebel children.
      • Aside from the "Scooby-Doo" Hoax itself, Blight's nephew Blane leaps from one moving horse to another while felling peacekeepers with a bo staff.
    • How far District 7 has come from being a homophobic district to cheering when Blane Gavin and Mitch Murphy share a kiss after their victory against the peacekeepers.
  • District 8:
  • District 10:
    • The Ranchers turning "each ranch into a veritable death trap of snares and booby-traps".
    • The final battle of District 10 sees two hundred peacekeepers killed in four minutes. The Anasazi come out of the mountains in a "ramshackle cavalry charge". Bovina leads the charge from the roof of her old mentor's truck, with a pistol in one hand and a pitchfork in the other. The peacekeepers (led by Thread's brother) turn their backs on the Settlers they've been subjecting to a Death March to return fire at the Anasazi and quickly regret it.
As one, the Settlers rise up from the dirt. From their packs and bags they pull out the weapons they smuggled along on the march. Meat cleavers, butcher knives, firearms that the Anasazi smuggled to them from the moment the Quell was announced. Every man, every woman, every child has something to fight with. And when Thread and his peacekeepers see the glint of steel and hear the first gunshots, they understand their last mistake. Look weak, act pathetic, march into the desert like sniveling, cowardly fools. The tributes weren't the only ones who learned a thing or two from Johanna Mason.
  • The reveal that District 11's rebellion has concluded by the time Katniss shot the arrow into the forcefield. They're the first district to do so among the rest of the districts (without the aid of any living Victor), thanks to their scorched earth policy that makes it unpragmatic for the Capitol to take them back.
