* ExtremelyEasyExam: During the Central arc, for the promotion exams, Second Seat Rindo Koboyashi only requires Takumi and Megumi to make a decent dish that was enough to satisfy her tastebuds to pass. As all three are attending an academy where ''everyone'' is to some level a SupremeChef, this was ''extremely'' easy for both characters. ArcVillain Azami is even annoyed when he gets word of this (Rindo was supposed to face both in a CookingDuel to make sure neither of them would pass the exams) and bans her from any furthering proctoring as a result.

* SecretTestOfCharacter: Besides serving as on-the-job training, Senzaemon reveals a hidden purpose of Stagiaire Month: CharacterDevelopment. Not only are students expected to perform well under pressure, they are also encouraged to both "leave a mark" on their assigned restaurants (that is, encourage changes that last beyond their tenure) and nurture their mental and emotional strength. And as seen in various cutaways, the 500 or so survivors of the training camp got whittled down ever further when faced with the realities of the outside world.

** During the training camp, Shinomiya's test was just to reproduce one of his dishes. It's a pretty complex dish, but the real point of the assignment was to test how aggressive the students were willing to get in order to secure everything they would need to succeed because the test is designed to fail anyone who isn't quick enough to grab the best materials. Shinomiya knows from personal experience that when actually trying to run a business and succeed you ''need'' to be aggressive because people will take any opportunity they can get to undercut you. This is presumably why Senzaemon okayed the otherwise unfair seeming assessment: Megumi is frequently hindered by her passive nature and low self esteem.

** Soma echoes his father's words when describing cooking as, "The journey's no fun if you know where you're going." This is the fundamental idea behind the heroes' conflict against Azami's beliefs.beliefs, [[spoiler:who wished to use Erina's God's Tongue to act as a 'compass' for said journey.]]
** The word 'specialty' or the phrase 'face of the cook' shows often as the next level in evolving one's own cooking--in other words, 'individuality'. It's the stage where a perfectly classical dish is modified to such an extent only a particular chef can make it, regardless of the presence of recipe. It's usually the tipping point in an otherwise even match, and the mark of a proper chef.
*** Soma and Ryo lost to Hayama in the Autumn Election finals because they lack this aspect--or, to be more precise, Hayama is further along in developing his specialty.
*** Erina is noted to ''not'' have a specialty precisely because her God's Tongue makes her a MasterOfAll. Notably, in the series, she's only ever cooked ''one'' dish which may be considered her specialty, and that's even something she takes several pages out of Soma's book from, not entirely her own original creation. [[spoiler:It's implied she makes one for her mother after the final chapter, but her dish isn't seen.]]
*** Soma eventually codifies his own roughly as 'a diner's wisdom'. Ironically, [[spoiler:the DiscOneFinalBoss in the Blue competition, Asahi, ''does not'' have one of his own because of his [[CripplingOverspecialization reliance on his supernatural ability, "Cross Knives",]] and hence lost, [[CallBack mimicking Soma's own loss against Hayama.]]]]
*** A step further along this line is the formation of 'supernatural abilities', though technically only Erina and Asahi manages to do so with their ''inborn'' abilities, so it's something generally unattainable. The latter's underlings' own are just comically exaggerrated versions of specialty with their unique tools--ditto the Aldini twins' ''mezzaluna'', Tsukasa's 'sword grater', etc.

** Somewhat TruthInTelevision. The exaggerated reactions are mostly caused by intense yet complex flavours assaulting the characters' palate. The human tongue doesn't completely develop and mature its taste receptors until well into our teenage years, meaning the kids aren't showing indecent reactions because they ''can't'' taste those over-the-top flavours, unlike the main characters or adults. Well, unless one has God's Tongue...

* ItRunsInTheFamily: There's several prevalent examples, including:
** Most notably, the Nakiri family. They're all very skilled in various areas of cuisines (even the in-laws... [[spoiler:potentially including Soma, if WordOfGod is to be believed]]). They're the only family full of supernatural abilities which are comical if viewed from the outside, such as 'stripping', God's Tongue, and [[spoiler:Asahi's Cross Knives (though he only joins the family near the end of the story after Erina invites him in)]]. Senzaemon, Soe, and Mana all have UnusualEyebrows, too. [[spoiler:Both Mana and Erina like men who constantly challenge them in cooking (Azami and, again, potentially Soma).]]
** The Yukihira's family's penchant on making gross, unusual dishes.
** Subaru and his father look ''a lot'' like each other, down to their generally delicate cooking styles (disregarding Subaru's Trace). The Mimasaka family runs a Western-style restaurant, and it's telling one of Subaru's worst defeats is against a traditional Japanese chef... in a sushi contest.

** Hayama delivers a milder version to Hisako when he defeats her in the Fall Classic quarterfinals. Totsuki seems to have a culture where students spend most of their time free to do as they please, which mostly amounts to them challenging each other to cooking duels and taking the occasional cooking class and cooking exam.
