Caliber in this sense just means how long the barrel is (in factors of bore width) almost all references are to the 1.1 inch

* One of the anti-aircraft guns used on US naval ships was a 75 caliber gun nicknamed "The Chicago Piano." Prior to that, "Chicago Piano" was a nickname for the Thomson Submachine gun.

Older Than Dirt specifically means \"before 500 BC.\" It is a very poorly named index.

** It actually is [[OlderThanDirt Older Than Gunpowder]]: during the [[TheCrusades siege of Acre]], King Phillip II of France famously nicknamed one of his two trebuchets "Bad Neighbor". (The other one was "[[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast God's Own Sling]]"; the opposing Muslim army had its counterpart, "Bad Kinsman").

** Big Bertha, the famous rail-cannon. Sounds more like an overweight opera-singer (soon to be hilariously dropped on the head of an unfortunate cartoon animal) than a cannon capable of firing shells the size of a Volkswagen Bug. (Okay, maybe that was hyperbole, but still...)
*** .....great, now you made me imagine a large cannon that shoots over weight opera singers at people....

*** [[FreudWasRight And not THAT organ.]]

** Right here. Thank David Attenborough!
** Only the most adorable animal on earth.
*** And then they tend to give them even cuter nicknames. Go to a german Tanker and ask for "Leo" or his "Devine Big-Maschine" (Göttliches Großgerät), he´ll know what you mean. Or the Flakvest, abbreviatevly called SpliSchu (for Splitterschutz, Fragmentprotection), which sounds very cute when pronounced. The Theme of naming combat Vehicles after Animals carried over from the Wehrmacht, or aren´t you familiar with the Tiger, Panther and MAUS?

* The habit of naming cannons goes back all the way to the advent of widespread artillery. Since there was no standardization for the bore sizes, the balls and loading and cleaning equipment had to be custom made for each cannon. Naming the cannons made it easier for the less-well-paid members of the cannon crew to fetch the right equipment. Incidentally this troper is part of a group that owns a replica cannon named Paksu Katariina (Fat Catherine).

** Two huge German Krupp K5 railroad guns which were used to defend against the Allied landing at Anzio, Italy in 1944 were nicknamed by their crews ''Leopold'' and ''Robert'', which are men's names and only slightly cutesy...but the Allied soldiers who were taking fire from the guns called them ''Anzio Express'' and ''Anzio Annie''.
** Subverted with the most (in)famous WorldWarII German tank, the ''Panzerkampfwagon VI'' aka the ''Tiger''.
