* DynamicCharacter: Out of all the character in the show, Denero undergoes the most development. He starts off as a very shy withdrawn kid, often acting like a beaten puppy at times. When he meets Marcus, the resulting fear and eventual rivalry starts to bring him out of his shell as he shows a more confrontational side to himself. This comes to a head when he merges with the meteor and becomes an almost insufferable {{Jerkass}}. However, after being forced into a HeelRealization courtesy of Apophis, he finally achieves a balance between his earlier kindness, and his current confidence.

* AmbiguousAllegiance: It's still unclear whether or not he actually wants to help the duelists or is working against them.

* AmbiguousAllegiance: It's very difficult to tell which side he's on, if he has one aside from his own, or what kind of person he really is underneath all of the false fronts, lies, and guileful behavior. Even his answers have vague meanings, and could be construed differently.

He's friendly and polite, but is genuinely unable to understand why mind raping and executing an enemy would be considered a bad thing. Somewhat understandable when you consider that the only companion he's ever had is a StarfishAlien literally designed for war.

* StarfishAlien: His biology is clearly nothing like anything found on earth.
* TricksterArchetype: Aliens are seen as meddlers and tricksters on the other side.

* FriendlyRivalry: He formed one with Roxas at the start of Season One
* HiddenDepths: While Art looks like a fairly stable and reliable guy, it's pretty clear that he's hiing a lot of personal insecurities. Plus there's that whole "Chaos" thing.

** Supposedly Jacques is a very good duellist. This gets harder to believe with every loss he receives.

* GuileHero: As shown during the duel against Skull Knight. He’s surprisingly deceptive when he needs to be.

* IdealHero: Despite being an example of DarkIsNotEvil, Sigmund actually fits this trope rather well, being honourable, kind-hearted and humble.
* TheIdealist: And it pays off. With him standing firm against all of Skull Knight’s StrawNihilist rants.

* MotorMouth: He can be very long winded at times.

* TheReliableOne: Probably the main quality that leads to him being the team’s Leader.

* SmartPeoplePlayChess: Compares ‘’Duel Monsters’’ to a game of chess at one point.

* TheStrategist: As mentioned under GuileHero, he’s deceptively intelligent. But his strategies tend to focus on small term tactics rather than the long term Gambits that [[TheChessmaster Marcus]] uses.
* TeamDad: What he ''tries'' to act like at times. He's becoming much better at it as the series progresses; it really comes to light when he comforts Marcus.
* VitriolicBestBuds: While not as strong as some other examples, he and Freed do still have the occasional “[[LikeAnOldMarriedCouple Lover’s Quarrel]]”
* WhatYouAreInTheDark: Faces this when forced to fight alone against Skull Knight. [[spoiler: He passes with flying colours]]

* HotBlooded: Easily the most hot-headed and emotional of the duelists.

* IgnoredEpiphany: Several times the other characters call him out on his bullshit, only to be brushed aside. It takes an Apophis-created Meteor to [[TheReasonsYouSuckSpeech finally spell it out for him]].
* ImNotAHeroIm: Constantly denies being a hero.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Denero has, as part of his levels in jerkass, become incredibly arrogant pushing his opinions and demands on others in exchange for aid.

** KickThemWhileTheyreDown: Callously insults Marcus after knowing that the latter had just been tortured.

* LackOfEmpathy: Has this attitude to lawbreakers. See KickThemWhileTheyreDown above.
* LawfulStupid: Again, his near pathological hatred of law-breakers goes far beyond any form of sense or sanity.

* MiseryBuildsCharacter: Being {{Mind Rape}}d by Apophis eventually leads to [[TookALevelInKindness Take A Level In Kindness]]

* NiceGuy: In his first appearence he was actually pretty friendly, albeit very shy.

* TheOtherDarrin: After a several month hiatus Denero's original player gave control of him to a new player.

* ProperlyParanoid / JerkassHasAPoint: While his reason's for not trusting the Headmaster is understandable, the fact that he seems to be wasting time giving him the third degree has ''not'' endeared him to the others.
* [[RaisedByGrandparents Raised By Uncle]]: He was brought up by his uncle after his parents were arrested when he was still very young.
* ServileSnarker: Despite normally being subservient to the Meteor, he still get's a few quips in at the latter's expense.

* StoppedCaring: Was kind of interested in being part of the team at first, but after duelling his own parents and merging with The Meteor, the resulting bitterness cause him to basically say "Screw you all!" to all the other duellists.
* TheRival: Towards Marcus. The fact that his parents once stole from Marcus's company doesn't help matters.
* TookALevelInJerkass: After the duel with the cultists, he has become a lot more aggressive and uncaring towards his fellow duellists. Likely due to him merging with the Jurrac Meteor.

* WhatTheHellHero:
** Gets this from Jacques after his decision to abandon Marcus. Ironic, since Marcus had ''wanted'' them to leave.
** And then an epic Reason You Suck Speech and WhatTheHellHero lecture from David.
* YourNotMyFather: Refuses to see his parents as anything but monsters.

The son of the wealthy Kyleman family, Marcus is probably the most... "[[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} unique]]" duellist in the academy.

* AllTheOtherReindeer: ZigZagged. He was never really bullied at school, and he kept himself seperate from others because he knew that they found him weird and didn't really want to talk to him. He doesn't really care about having friends, but there are hints that it's a desire that he's regulated to "Never Going To happen".
* AloofAlly: Played with, minus the badass aspect. While he's happy to help the group and is reasonably polite to them, he doesn't really consider himself to be part of the team, and considers their alliance to be more along the lines of a business deal; it's exaggerated to the point where he is legitimately shocked to hear Sigmund call him a friend.

* BerserkButton: Never bully someone in front of him, and if you do, and you continue to belittle others, then pray to '''God''' that you can back it up or Marcus will ''destroy'' you. As Gretel found out the hard way.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He went from being affable and friendly... to trying to [[MindRape break]] Gretel. Needless to say, many of the other students were shocked by this transformation.

* BrutalHonesty: Marcus is blunt.
* ButtMonkey: He seemed like this in his first two duels, being [[CurbstompBattle Curbstomped]] ''twice'' and failing to inflict any damage in either duel. However...
* TheChessmaster: Marcus almost ALWAYS has a plan in everything he does or says.
** During the duel with Gretel, he used ObfuscatingStupidity both to lure Gretel into a false sense of security, and also to simply [[TheGadfly annoy the crap out of her]]. (She had ''really'' pissed him off with her arrogant attitude before the duel, so he was trying to not just beat, but humiliate her) When Marcus saw the face-down cards on Gretel's side of the field, he was almost positive that they were traps. However, he also realized that it was better to spring them ''now'', and lose a weak monster, than to spring them later and lose one of his trump cards. Furthermore, he also had three separate traps of his own that he could use to counter her retaliation. Now, if he were to use the same cold, confident and eloquent attitude he had been using in the previous duels, then it would be obvious to Gretel that he had a plan. And Marcus knew that Gretel was intelligent enough to easily figure it out. (After all, if ''he'' could figure it out, then so could she.) But by acting like a fool, he could make his reckless actions look like the work of an incompetent amateur who didn't know what he was doing. Furthermore, by being as annoyingly retarded as possible, he manipulated Gretel into wanting to end the duel as quickly as possible, which meant she would be quick to play her strongest monsters in order to take him down as quickly as possible, little knowing that he had a surprise waiting for them. His plan worked perfectly. She wasted her backrow and Mystical Space Typhoon on cards that could easily be replaced, and in her impatience to end the sham of a duel and shut up the babbling idiot, she threw one of her beloved Xyz monsters right into the path of a Mirror Force. leaving Alien Hypno free to attack her directly.
*** On a larger scale, Marcus was also setting up a HeadsIWinTailsYouLose situation. If Gretel lost, then she would have just lost to an idiot, but if she won, then she would have just wasted half an hour of her time.
** During the finals of the tournament, Marcus tricks the others into believing that his partner can read minds. This leads Denero (Who is terrified that Marcus will recognise him as a son of thieves and expose him to the other duellists) to try and turn the others against Marcus. Both Denero and Jurrac Meteor believed they had outwitted Marcus, but it was in fact the other way around. Marcus lied about Gol'gar's mind-reading ability in order to gauge the reactions from the others, [[BatmanGambit knowing that the ones who panicked would be the ones with something to hide]], and [[UnwittingPawn Denero had fallen right into his trap.]]
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Probably the most absent-minded of the duellists.

* ConfusionFu: Frequently uses this to throw his opponent of their game.

** This is one of the reason's losing to Haine effects him so badly. For the first time in his life ''[[HeroicBSOD Marcus is too scared to get back up and fight.]]''

* EpicFail: During the battle royale, he screws up his entire strategy ''twice'' by misreading his own cards.

* HeroicBSOD: He falls into one after being tortured by Haine.
* IdleRich: although he doesn't flaunt his wealth, he has no real interest in his family's business.

* ManipulativeBastard: Just look at all the other tropes in this folder.
* MindControl: Many of his cards have this power.

* ObfuscatingStupidity: This is essentially Marcus's signature tactic. By feigning incomptetence, he is able to gain an advantage over his opponent without the opponent ever realising the danger they're in until it's too late. Shown best in his CurbstompBattle against Denero's father. Ironically, that particular duel also {{Deconstructed}} this trope, as his own partner began to lose faith in his ablilities. * NotSoStoic: His HeroicBSOD is the first time we see him show any real emotion.

* TokenEvilTeammate: After what he did to the cultist...
* VitriolicBestBuds: Subverted; out of all the duellists and their spirits, he and Gol'Gar seem to get along the best.

However David has shown a slightly darker and more Badass side to his personality. He curbstomped Denero into dust, completely turned his appearance around, and he appears to have a few more internalized...problems...than we thought. He claims to be an "Apophis Guardian", and was the one who told Avrum about the threat posed by Apophis. Even so, there are numerous mysterious facts about his personality, let alone his bizarre habit of sneaking around the Academy.]] Then again, considering that the cast of this show consists of, at last count, a borderline sociopath, an 'Outseer', a 'Dualmind', multiple people with Duel Spirits, a hacker, a thief with a dark past, a boy possesed by an evil sword and another who can somehow fight Shadow duels despite not having a spirit, David is ''still'' probably the closest thing to a normal person at this school.

* AmbiguousAllegiance: It is very, very difficult to tell which side he's on, if he has one aside from his own, or what kind of person he really is underneath all of the false fronts, lies, and guileful behavior. Even his answers have vague meanings, and could be construed differently.
** And now that Apophis is gone, and he is ''still around'', there are only more questions about him.
* AscendedFanBoy: He gets to hang out with the duelists fighting Apophis, and he is, as stated, their biggest fan.
** Though given the reveal about him, [[spoiler: namely that he designated them, and that he was the one who brought information to the Academy in the first place, it paints a picture more like ManBehindTheMan rather than this trope. See the trope itself below.]]

** Not afraid to stand up against a scary Denero for the girl he seems to like, even less scared to tell him in a frank manner why he sucks, and then {{Curbstomp|Battle}} him. And that was when David was at his ''weakest''.

* CoolShades: David is never seen without his cool shades...
** SunglassesAtNight: Even when he probably doesn't need them. Come to think of it, we've never seen David's eyes...

* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Cowers and acts afraid in his second or so appearance, and then he combines two powerful card effects in his first duel, making a powerful lock on his opponent. And he's even summoned Dark Magician, and used that and a powerful and competent strategy to disable and lock Denero down, and then quickly ''destroy him''.

* GlowingEyesOfDoom: Before using some sort of spell to help the group fight against Apophis in the finale.
* GuileHero / EvilGenius: Depending on what his true allegiance is, or if he even has one.

* INeedYouStronger / YouAreNotReady: He wants to try to duel Denero again in order to try to make him less of a jerk in order to make the party "complete". Though it has the nasty caveat of David inwardly threatening to "discard" Denero if he doesn't shape up.

* ManBehindTheMan: David was the one who told Avrum all about the Apophis Cult, the way to fight them, and what they were after, as well as the full details of the duelists with Duel Spirits. This technically makes him the man behind Avrum and his mother, who he gave information to that is strangely unrelated to Apophis altogether...

** BewareTheNiceOnes: Despite playing nice, it has been shown that David is a lot more deadly than he looks.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: He seems to be a somewhat dimwitted, cowardly sort when being watched by others, and who can only be courageous when fighting to defend a girl he likes. This front was momentarily dispelled when he became quite serious at the end of his duel with Denero, dishing out a very brutal Reason You Suck Speech. And ever since then, he simply stopped being quite so ditzy and cowardly, and has become more mysterious.
* ShoutOut / {{Expy}}: In general, he seems reminiscent of Shingetsu Rei. He is aloof and mysterious, while pretending to be goofy and unassuming around others, and has shown hints of a darker, more mysterious side of his personality. He even calls himself a "Apophis Guardian".

* TallDarkAndHandsome: Its really amazing what some hygiene and proper bodily posture can do. David first looked like a barely washed basement dwelling geek, but after combing his hair, washing his face, and adjusting his posture, turns out he's quite muscular and tall, and [[MrFanservice impressive looking.]]

* WildCard: With more and more of his darker personality being revealed, it is becoming increasingly difficult to define where his loyalties lie. Is he [[TheMole a spy]] [[EnigmaticMinion for Apophis]], or an AloofAlly for our side? Is he PlayingBothSides against each other, or is he [[AllPowerfulBystander content to watch the Fireworks]].
** Then there's the question of who's agenda he serves. His own? [[BigBad Apophis's]]? [[BiggerBad The monsters sealed by Apophis]]? [[BigGood The other Gods]]? Or ''[[ThePowersThatBe someone else entirely]]?''

A strange young child who seems to work for the Cult of Apophis, he mainly appears to spy on the heroes, and gave out certain cards to his allies. Otherwise, he is basically a normal kid...or is he? Haine has also given some disturbing cards to the Cultists, and despite working for Apophis, its hinted he has his own agenda.

* ArchEnemy: While Haine is an enemy of all the duelists, his enmity with Marcus is ''far'' more personal than any of the others. While Haine seems to find most of the duelists amusing playthings, Marcus is the only one he genuinely '''''despises''''' thanks to Marcus's taunts managing to get under his skin. Conversely, Haine's torture of Marcus and murder of Sylvestre, has given Marcus his first real personal stake in the war.
* AxCrazy: Oh yeah! While most of the cultists serve Apophis for selfish gain or because they've been Brainwashed, Haine serves because he simply enjoys hurting people.
* BigBad: He's apparently the leader of the cultists, and the most dangerous enemy the duellists directly confront.
* CallBack: To Yami Marik, even going so far as to use his Fiend/Immortality deck. Since it appears that he is Yami Marik somehow placed in a child's body, this makes sense.

* CombatSadomasochist: Par for the course with the cultists really, but he takes it several steps further.
* TheCorrupter: Most of his cultists were normal humans {{Mind Rape}}d into insanity by his powers.
* DarkIsEvil: He uses Yami Marik's Fiend-Immortality Deck.
* DeadlyUpgrade: Haine's cards. Just going by effects, they are quite powerful, and have an equal chance of ruining you as they do defeating your opponent.
* EnfanteTerrible: A psychotic HumanoidAbomination in the guise of a ten year old boy.
* EvilSorcerer: It seems he has some sort of power over what will happen to someone in a Shadow Game. Not to mention his use of Hatred Battle Booster on certain cultists.
* HumanoidAbomination: He looks like a normal human child. Emphasis on ''looks like.''

** Its even worse than that. He was personally involved in making many of the cultists what they are now.

* NotSoHarmlessVillain: He mostly just stood around shouting and saying random things, with no real consistency to his arguments. However, he is apparently some sort of EvilSorcerer, he is currently duelling Marcus and Sylvestre, and he apparently uses a nasty deck full of traps. And then there's how he's completely dominating two duellists at once, torturing them both while keeping his better plays to himself in order to extend the suffering. Not to mention what he did to Gol'gar.
* OlderThanHeLooks: Its hinted Haine was around during ''Battle City'', and somehow knows about the battle between Seto and Yugi and Umbra and Lumis.[[note]]More interestingly, he also knows that Seto is the reincarnation of Set. And calls them Yu-chan, Set-chan, Mask 1 and Mask 2.[[/note]]
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: With the question answered that Haine is Yami Marik, and the knowledge that Yami Marik said that he was waiting for one thousand years, the question still remains...''what is in this child's body?''

The tournament organizer and an industrialist, Ravvas seemed to expect something out of East Academy...and knew that they were the ones who defeated Haine and Apophis, by unknown means. What this means about him is unclear, but his personality and preferences are clear enough, so it seems.

* AristocratsAreEvil: He gives off this vibe, with his title of "Lord" and all. That and he feels he can basically do as he pleases due to being [[ScrewTheRulesIHaveMoney incredibly rich]] and having[[ScrewTheRulesIHaveConnections ...connections.]]

* BadLiar:: His excuse when Samuel catches him trying to direct Jason behind his back?: "I was making funny faces."
* CardCarryingVillain: Used for comedy during his attempt to...erm...its not clear ''what'' he was trying to do when explaining the Hand of Isis.
* DiabolicalMastermind: He certainly thinks so, just as him!

* EvilPlan: His would appear to be minimalizing the number of East Academy students who make it to the finals. He's...not half bad at the planning and organizing, but Megala's help is necessary for the greater portions.

** SpannerInTheWorks: However his actions ultimately forced Samuel to reveal more information than he'd originally intended.

* TheCombatPragmatist: She is arranging such for the impending duel with Jason, apparently. Her box it seems will "help him with shuffling."

A mysterious man working as part of Ravvas's tournament staff. At least at first glance. It soon becomes apparent that he has his own plans in mind and is far more competant than his quote on quote "boss".

He later reveals to the duelists that he's the head of a counter-terroism agency looking to recruit them and that the entire tournament was created as a way to test their skills. Even then though, there's still doubts about how honest he's being.

** BiggerBad: The logical alternative.
* TheChessmaster: There are some pretty clear signs that his actions are working to a larger goal.
* TheDreaded: Samuel seems to really frighten Ravvas.
* GoodIsNotNice: Assuming he ''IS'' one of the good guys, he's still willing to have someone's arm broken if they inconveniance him.

!!Captain Graeme Daniels.

* CreepyGood: Assuming that he actually IS one of the good guys.
* TheDragon / NumberOne: To Samuel, which one he is depends on their actual alignment.
* TheDreaded / HorrifyingHero: Samuel only makes Ravvas nervous. EVERYONE is weary of Graeme.

* GasMaskMooks: Though he's far higher ranking than a mook.

* SoftSpokenSadist: His voice has been described as being suprisingly soft when he speaks and, good guy or not, he snapped Ravvas's arm in half when the latter started being an annoyance.

* HeroicAntagonist / HeroOfAnotherStory: Nothing about them suggests any malevolent intent, in fact they actually seem like pretty nice guys. They just happen to be dueling the protagonists.
* UnwittingPawn: possibly, they don't seem to know much about Ravvas. But Ravvas seems intent on using them to get rid of people in his tournament he doesn't like.

* HeroKiller: Nonlethal example - he defeated Sigmund, one of the most Badass members of the heroes. Though not without taking more damage than he'd ever recieved in his entire carreer.

* LonelyAtTheTop: he hints toward it when he asks Sigmund to be his friend.
* TheStoic: he does not emote very much.

Ravvas' personal assistant and "minder". She is the voice of sanity in his dark operations, and is, while as skeevy as he is, much more goal oriented and less easily flustered. She mainly works to mind her boss' temperament and ego, and at the same time, speaks inwardly of dealing with his problems [[TryingToCatchMeFightingDirty her own way.]]

* {{Expy}}: Similar name? Check. Similar smugness? Check. Associates with a woman who has a spider motif? Check. Ravvas is a pretty obvious expy of [[WheelOfTime Rahvin.]]

* DynamicCharacter: Out of all the character in the show, Denero arguably undergoes the most development. He starts off as a very shy withdrawn kid, often acting like a beaten puppy at times. When he meets Marcus, the resulting fear and eventual rivalry starts to bring him out of his shell as he shows a more confrontational side to himself. This comes to a head when he merges with the meteor and becomes an [[TheScrappy almost insufferable]] {{Jerkass}}. However, after being forced into a HeelRealization courtesy of Apophis, he finally achieves a balance between his ealier kindness, and his current confidence.

* WomanInBlack: Her outfit is entirely black, and as covered in ArachnidAppearanceAndAttire, has a spider theme.

* BadAss: He made it into the finals and even managed to take down ''Peter'' who up until then had been Curb stomping everyone he faced.

* BadAss: He managed to win ''two'' {{Curbstomp Battle}}s in a row.
