(Spoilers.)
Rio 2 had some funny moments, but it kind of fails over all. I laughed, sure, but this movie left me with quite a few questions. It also felt quite short, I had to ask if it was over because the climax was so unsatisfying that I thought it was the middle.
There are two villains in this movie. One, Nigel from the first movie (and friends) comes off as kind of goldfish poop-ish, and the other was so underdeveloped that I had a hard time caring about him. They built him up to be some determined super evil guy, and I ended up expecting a lot out of him. But nope. Eaten by a snake. He tries
It also gave me three questions by the end. What happened to Jewel's mom? Why was Roberto freaking out about being a pet? And why was Nigel never able to fly again? Actually, I can answer that last one now. It appears that his feathers were clipped, since there is no mention of eyesight impairment or some other debilitating injury (He can still flap his wings and get slightly airborne, implying his wings work okay. Besides the feather thing.) I thought this might be the case, but it appears his primary flight feathers are fine! Just kind of ruffled. So why? I'm probably getting worked up about something that might not even be the case, so I digress.
Blu, Jewel, the kids, and many other characters got almost no character development. The little character development Blu did get felt like it wasn't earned, and he doesn't really achieve much. True, they got rid of the loggers by the end, but I can't believe that the clan of blue macaws would trust Blu enough to let him lead them into battle.
This movie felt pretty unnecessary with the emotional resolution from the first one.
WesternAnimation Not really bad.. But not better than the original.

The music was pretty nice though.
