Though I may have basically created the entire page, I desperately need to vent this here.
I have two different standards for what truly marks a work as an exceptional cut above the rest, at least in my eyes.
1. The work in question hits me close enough to home/is emotional enough to make me cry. Undertale’s True Pacifist ending does this, and so does the entirety of Fiery Sprites’s Make A Friend series (Kirby).
2. The work in question sends my emotional vibes into complete wack so hard and so quickly that I end up insomniac for a whole night and spend the next week with a probably unrelated but still eerily coincidental flu. The work in question is Entity NEO. Goddammit, EN.
- Bonus points if the aforementioned emotional vibes are the things getting me logged onto this site in the first place.
Anyway, to cut straight to the point: Entity NEO is a wonderful read from out of left field, considering that a large majority of Undertale fan fiction/comics tends to focus on the True Pacifist ending, Asriel/Flowey, Frisk, Sans, Chara, at least one of these things if not all of ‘em, probably enough to make a drinking game out of every time I scroll through the Undertale tag on AO 3 with my can of green tea. I’d say it’s a nice (by nice I mean angsty, and oh boy do I love angsty) change of pace from what the fandom usually focuses on, if unexpected. Seems Mod NEO was right - there’s not much really focusing on the slightly more murdery Neutral routes in general. Especially the Alphys Queen ending.
Besides exploring a rather different niche and characters than what the fandom usually does (Personal rundown: Napstablook is basically
The Woobie at this point and needs hugs/therapy, like, yesterday/the plot to throw ‘em a bone. Alphys is wonderfully fleshed out and I love it. Sans is...heck, I wholeheartedly agree with that one asker that said that this Sans is one of the most in-character Sanses I’ve seen. Mettaton fuckin’ dies early on, yet I keep finding tropes centered around him and his aliven’t shtick in chapter 22. What’s up with that?), it also manages to balance out its darker, sadder events with good ol’ Mood Whiplash - I mean, a good blend of slightly more light-hearted and hopeful moments. (But I’m not kidding about the Mood Whiplash.) Take a shot of a drink of your choice every time you end up laughing while reading Entity NEO, and I’m pretty sure you’ll have drained a few by the time you reach the latest update. (I tried a variation where I looked through the various asks and sipped. My green tea didn’t last all that long.)
One of my favorite things about it, though, is definitely all the details and Fridge Horror that come and disturb me in the shower once I think about it hard enough. (Mods, if you’re reading this, I’ll probably shove those realizations in the ask box either this week or next week. Today’s the 22nd of October as I’m typing this, and I have not gotten over the fact that Mettaton likely knows Blooky’s in the body, but how long has he been conscious? And Shyren and the Snowdin Canine Unit and Snowdrake are dead from Chara, so where do the Amalgamates go? Is Metta somehow going to end up like Narrator Chara, given how he’s basically shown us he ain’t quite gone yet? Was the Fridge Horror intentional? As much as I’d like to yeet these in now, it’s nearly 10pm at the moment and I need sleep instead of answers.)
In conclusion, I highly recommend reading Entity NEO if you’re looking for something new, or just like Mettaton and Napstablook in general. While beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, and I may be clinically myopic, I am very certain I’ve come across a diamond in the rough, and it’s dazzling.
