This is quite possibly the dumbest anime I’ve seen for quite a long time and I don’t even really know how I managed to watch the whole thing.
Mouse is a pretty obscure, early 2000s anime, so I’m not going to “hate on it” as much as I probably would do if it were more popular or not obviously bottom tier anime trash.
Because that’s what it is. Sorry to disappoint.
Mouse is a "comedy" harem anime centred around the exploits of Mouse, a phantom thief, and his three busty bimbo sidekicks, who look like slutty versions of the Totally Spies! girls. If you want the perfect idea of what this show is like, I suggest watching the opening, and only the opening. Annoying, trying too hard to be cutesy, singing? Check. Absurdly over-sized breasts and panty shots? Check. (One of the girls boobs are so big they almost appear to smack her in the face during the song, which is genuinely hilarious). Character designs that scream “generic”? Check. In your face fan service? Check, check and more check.
Going into Mouse itself, you don’t fare much better. It doesn’t help that the show often feels like the creators had just watched Lupin III for the first time and decided to jazz it up a bit by adding more boobies.
So, you’re probably thinking, why even care? This show is a comedy right? It’s meant to be dumb.
But here’s the thing, it's a comedy that isn’t funny. The characters are all one note and annoying anime cliches. The girls are only there to provide fan service and have no personality other than wanting to sleep with the MC. Oh don’t get me wrong, the show surprised me by trying to give them development and drama. And it was some of the most vulgar and sexist writing I’ve ever seen.
For example, one of Mouse’s female companions was groomed from childhood to become the perfect partner to help him in the thieving business.
Mouse’s secret hideout is also beneath a school, not because that makes any sense at all for a wanted criminal to do, but so you can get obvious fan service from school girls. Mouse even poses as a teacher as part of his brilliant alter-ego disguise, and goes on dates with one of his students.
If the show was actually doing its job (to be a comedy), having his hide out be in such a dumb place could be hilarious. Though considering how poorly delivered all the other jokes are in this series, perhaps I shouldn't be asking for more attempts at humour.
The show is also ugly looking, which is no surprise considering it was animated by Studio DEEN. None of the designs are particularly interesting to look at. Mouse's thief costume just looks like a generic ninja halloween costume and the girls costumes are designed with fan service over practicality in mind.
I could get quite heated about this, but I honestly don’t care. It’s just a bad show that deserves to be forgotten.
The only positive I can say is that it's a very short series, the episodes are only about 10 minutes long compared to the usual 25 or 30 for an anime. However, that doesn’t mean its an easy sit through. I watched it with a friend and one episode was so cringe inducing we paused it and had a 15 minute break before finishing it.
Manga Why even bother?
