I'm a big fan of Gundam, but there are still entries from it that I dislike. The Twilight AXIS ONA however, felt particularly bad even among my dislike for Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny. And it's sad, because I know that it's the fault of the ONA rather than the series itself.
The ONA just doesn't give sufficient context about what's going on and I had to ask the people of reddit for clarification on pretty much everything after I watched the final episode. Somehow, a guy described the plot in a single paragraph in a way that was easier to understand and much more interesting than the ONA's attempts at storytelling. There's so little exposition or it is so brief that it is hard to take in before the series cuts to the next scene. This confusion in turn makes it hard to get invested in the characters, since you don't know what they are doing and why you should care. And yea, the action is good, but I want a good story and characters to go alongside whatever action a work throws at me, or I just can't care.
There's changing aspects of the plot for an adaptation, and then there's removing the ability to understand it. If I can ever get a hold of the source material, I am hoping that it will be much better.
