Sounding the Seventh Trumpet: A Raw Start

The sound of Sounding the Seventh Trumpet would not be the Hard Rock Alternate Metal with some softness in-between Sevenfold would come 2 be known 4 l8er, but rather a raw sort of meshing of melodic metalcore and punk rock, with some softness in-between. The first time I listened 2 this album, I didn't think of it much. I just came off the heels of Waking the Fallen, and when I finished StST, I had the thought that it was mostly samey metalcore that is better listened 2 as a full album instead of seperate songs. But now, this, along with Waking, is the only thing I've been listening 2 4 almost 2 months. The sheer heaviness of the album—the band's heaviest album in their discography at that— and the feeling of power exhibited through that heaviness keeps me coming back. I'm not sure I worded that right, but I think these albums are fucking gr8.

This album is most definitely not in line with future albums. I like 2 imagine it's its own seperate entity, the far left side of the pipeline when you try 2 figure out your sound and do it your best, despite it being shit. Not 2 me though. Certain songs like Turn The Other Way and Darkness Surrounding just do not let up, and are all around badass tracks. But there are softer sides 2 the album. An Epic Of Time Wasted has a moment halfway through where M. Shadows starts talking through something like a radio or something idk XD and it gets all soft 4 a second. And then there's Warmness On The Soul. Warmness kinda set a precedent 4 every future album 2 have a soft song, and is good in it's own right. The solo is great 2, shows how underrated Zacky is as a guitarist. About that, the intro 2 Lips of Deceit is my favorite riff ever. It sounds fucking angelic.

Of course, like every debut album, it's flawed. This is some of Matt's worst singing ever. When he's not doing the Harsh Vocals thing, he sounds abysmal. He sounds like a child trying 2 sing in front of his kindergarten class. This is especially noticeable on Warmness On The Soul and Streets, 2 entire songs without any harsh vocals.

Adding on 2 the flaws, some tracks just really lose their pace halfway through, which is very unfun. The midway points of The Art Of Subconscious Illusion and Forgotten Faces both feature parts that slow what was a very energetic song, and would be S+ tier songs without them.

All that said, I still fucking love it. The sheer rawness and energy displayed here isn't replicated by much melodic metalcore bands, at least not as well.

Song ranking:

1. Warmness On The Soul

2. To End The Rapture

3. Streets

4. An Epic Of Time Wasted

5. Breaking Their Hold

6. We Come Out At Night

7. Forgotten Faces

8. Shattered By Broken Dreams

9. The Art Of Subconscious Illusion

10. Thick and Thin

11. Lips Of Deceit

12. Darkness Surrounding

13. Turn The Other Way

A bit hard 2 rank 4 me, as no matter how low or high a song is, I love them all 4 their own reasons.
