The best Pokemon RO Mhack, for good reason

(Yeah so obviously I'm talking about version 2.0+)

So there's been a lot of hype surrounding Unbound, and after getting through Expert (no, I haven't done Insane yet but I might now I know what happens) I have to say it's actually everything people say it is. It's an entirely original region, its Gyms are actually pretty fun and require some outside the box thinking (not to Reborn terrain gimmick levels though, thankfully, those were massive headaches), and the story's actually not too bad. I mean, the dialogue didn't read like a teenager texting on the phone, so already that puts it leagues ahead of the other RO Mhacks out there.

Soundtrack kicks ass, not gonna lie. Favourite remix is the Sinnoh Gym theme, fave original track's probably either Ivory's (graceful) or Jax's (hype) battle theme.

I have my quibbles, sure. Story-wise, we hear a lot about this Fey lady but hardly ever see her. I get it's probably for the missing Post Game content, but I'm REALLY hoping that the reveal's worth it, or else it's just going to demonstrate the story could have worked well enough without her. I just wish she was more present, you know?

Second, the Missions. Don't get me wrong, the system itself is well designed, with the whole sidequest thing being one of the main draws of Unbound. However, some of them are pretty obnoxious to complete if you're not a patient guy. I remember getting lost in Thundercap and I found one of the Missions purely by chance, hidden in a small and obscure space a quick and casual playthrough would miss entirely. At least the reward when I did finish it (completing it was equally tiring as looking for it) was good.

None of this is deal-breaking though and it's still definitely playing for yourself, to explore this big-ass world and its lore and story. Word of advice though, this ain't Radical Red, so don't expect to have everything you need for a good team. And don't expect weird type changes either, Electivire's still just pure Electric type this time for example. I played the whole way and never once saw any Choice items, for starters, and some T Ms I hoped to get didn't appear in my main playthrough, so learn to work with what you've got.

Bottom line - it's a game of world exploring first with battling, not a battle sim. Don't treat it like a battle sim, and you'll have the most fun.

Word of advice, if the point of your review is to praise it, don\'t spend most of it on the negatives.
