I watched this show out of curiosity. When I heard about this show, I didn't know what I was walking in on. This show has a mixed reception with some saying this show is a mess and others saying it's one of the best Sonic shows. So I binged the show with no nostalgic bias. After watching it, what do I have to say? I think this show is a mediocre mess.
Now don't get me wrong, when this show decides to be good it can be a genuinely good series. When its emotional moments are handled properly, it can create scenes that are real tearjerkers, and when it's funny it can get me some great laughs! But those moments are few and far between. Out of the 78 episodes, I only enjoyed a handful of them, with no arc out of the series being consistently good all the way through. There's always an episode that's dragging it down, there's always the episode that makes me feel like I'm wasting my time, there's always an episode that just shatters the anime's fragile lore in some pathetic hope to be "complex"
The biggest problem of the anime I feel is a lack of consistency, not just in writing, but in characters and animation. I never know when the writing is going to be bad or keep me hooked. I never know when characters will act like themselves or just flanderized versions of them. I never know if the show will look like professional work by people who cares or a five year olds drawing. Not to mention this show can be so damn BORING and repetitive (especially in Seasons 1 & 3A)! It took my FIVE attempts to get through this stupid anime, and even then, I had to get someone to watch alongside me to help me through it (it was my father. We had a good time ragging on it, but still)
While I do appreciate the show for trying occasionally to be something better than it is and see it's got its heart in the right place, I overall thought this was a complete disaster. A handful of great moments in a sea full of mediocre or bad writing CAN NOT make a good show. If you have no nostalgic bias towards this show like me, I don't recommend you watching Sonic X Subbed or Dubbed. There's plenty of better Sonic content out there, so don't waste your time with this series.
