Bright is a movie that baffles me.

I have no idea why so many people like this film. It's terrible. It's full of basic storytelling mistakes and content a lot of people would find offensive.

If I could describe it in one word it would be "Uninspired". Despite the fun concept that has a lot of potential to be creative the whole movie feels creatively sterile.

The Worldbuilding is some of the worst I've ever seen. It just seems like the writers put together a bunch of ideas and words they thought would be cool without considering how it would all work in this universe instead of putting careful thought and detail into considering how our world would be affected by having fantasy elements as part of it. And the magic system is one of the worst I've seen too. How is anyone supposed to learn magic if there's a chance they could die upon touching the one thing that can channel their magical powers? Instead of doing something fun like having magic and technology mixed together we restrict it so hardly anyone can use it.

The plot is also just generic. Every single moment is just an excuse to lead into a new action scene until the climax. And it's full of plotholes. Ward and Jakoby spend a good chunk of the movie on the run from corrupt cops and gangsters after the magic wand but it doesn't seem to occur to ANY of them that there's a good chance no one can use this wand anyway! And at one point when Ward calls the police for help the guy on the other end tells them they won't press charges for Ward killing some corrupt cops from earlier because it was self-defense...and then not a minute later another guy with them Rodriguez tells Ward to cuff Jakoby to avoid getting arrested...EVEN THOUGH THE GUY ON THE PHONE SAID HE WOULDN'T PRESS CHARGES! This is storytelling 101 and they dropped the ball everywhere!

I remember when the climax happened and thinking the Eight Deadly Words. There's no reason to care about any of these characters because they're either assholes, incompetent or nothing is done to make us care about them.

I don't feel comfortable talking about the racism in depth in the film because I'm not good enough to get into that serious discussion but needless to say it's unrealistic and no one actually talks like a real person regarding it. It's extremely tasteless now in 2020 but I have a hard time believing it was any better in 2017...

There's more I could talk about but frankly, I don't think I have the space to describe everything wrong with this film.

If the sequel ever comes out I hope that whoever is in charge decides to fix the problems in the first film.
