Kind of hectic, but I kind of like that

1 The beginning: Monty knew what kind of personalities to give his main characters, but the quality is slightly iffy. Can't blame him for that though. He still did what he could with his resources.

2 The setup: Not a lot seems to be happening, but in the background we see the enemies putting together the trap that will bring RWBY to fame. Monty takes his time trying to show how the teams' backstories affect them as characters.

3 The collapse: The protagonists were happy. They were going to be in a tournament with their friends, and they expected to win. Then EVERYTHING goes wrong. The most vulnerable characters are pitted against each other: one fearful that her destiny was being forced upon her, the other oblivious to the enemy knowing who she was. Beacon academy gets destroyed and RWBY is split up. I like the change that happened, even if some eggs were cracked to make an omelette.

4 The journey: Ruby's uncle explains the global conspiracy to her and some of her friends. Weiss has a problem with her dad, and decides to bail. Yang has issues with being severely wounded and left behind by her sister and friends, but is too traumatized to think about it. Blake goes back home, but her cheery friend tells her to stop deciding what to do for her friends. Ruby's story is the same as before and that's ok. Yang's story doesn't have much change, but is that normal for a PTSD story? I prefer Weiss and Blake's storylines because of contrast.

5 The meetup: Where did Rooster Teeth go wrong? I suppose all the errors that Monty made would have bit them eventually. Yang's past was so vague that they were forced to focus most of the plot on her and her mother, leaving little/no room for other characters. Ruby is the same as ever, and somehow takes a fireball to the torso after one of her speeches. Weiss is in a mediocre area because so much time is taken from her. But I'm glad she developed into such a nice person. Blake has the most separate plot, but only because her past had held her back so much. And the enemies? Cinder is all over the place, Hazel's story is kind of acceptable, and Adam was just a bully. I doubt R.T. would make this mistake again.

6 The climb: Now that the truth about Ozpin is out, we shouldn't be getting anymore big plotholes. The Big Bad demands to know how R.T.- I mean her followers messed up so badly in Volume 5. Ruby and company steal a plane and have to fight a mech to avoid getting blasted by said mech. Yang and Blake finally put aside, or rather put down the one thing that was on their minds. (At the very least I now consider them Bash Sisters due to how often they fight together.)

Conclusion: It was a mess of papers at first, but then it caught on fire at Volume 5. And now R.T. is most likely making fertilizer out of the ashes for the garden that will be Volume 7. If they use with anymore details that you wish to complain about, that's probably them cleaning up more plotholes.
