Found a web cartoon that I absolutely am loving. Porkchop 'n Flatscreen by animator and musician Emezie Okorafor, the series revolves around the all-too serious Ninja Girl Mai and her friend the ditzy Ayane Shiun attending the Maximus Institute of Texas where they often got into crazy antics.
So starting off with characters, nearly every character is good in their own special way. Ninja Girl Mai whose main initiative was to exact her revenge on Principal Morrigan/The Queen after she killed her clan and brother. Mai for the most part acts the part of the "tough girl" where she is overly determined and oftentimes, this makes her haughty. Despite her setbacks, she balances this out with her friendship with Ayane. I love the bond that they have even to the point where Mai would lay down her life for Ayane's sake. Though admittedly her devotion can often make her overexert herself such as when she blackmailed Bobby into being Ayane's boyfriend under the threat of exposing his secret to the school body. She had good intentions behind it, but still.
Ayane is doting, and very affectionate often conveying it by forcefully hugging Mai fully knowing that she hated hugs, and she accidentally asphyxiates Bobby when she thought that he texted her to meet him at the school. One interesting fact is that she had purple hair as a result of a family curse. With Ayane, I started to like her more about 20 or so episodes in. At first, she came off as kind of bland of a character, but she began to develop more as a character when she realized the truth about her relationship with Bobby and then trying to wean Mai from having to protect her so she could be her own person. But as I have said, it is made abundantly clear how much she cherishes her bond with Mai. It makes one of the highlights of the series.
Mina Kim is probably a tie with Mouse as being my favorite character in the series. The leader of the Bangers (because they all have the same hairstyle) and constantly flip flopping between being an ally and an enemy of the girls, Mina to me is probably one of the more complex of the main cast. She may come off as the typical alpha bitch of the school with a bad memory, poor grades, and the like, but like an onion, there are layers. She is really someone who is insecure and feels that she must bully others to make herself feel better. However, instead of doing so, she suffers from depression and the feeling of being unwanted which is...something that a lot of people can relate to. You cannot look at me straight in the face and deny that you never felt that way. She actually has this urge to feel that she had a place to belong...even if she had to do underhanded things. In some ways, I feel that is the reason why she antagonizes Mai and Ayane so much. To her, she knows that they are happy together, and that they were probably something more. That feeling of insecurity would be soul-crushing. Too see that others are happy while it appears that you were given the short straw in life. It doesn't excuse any of her actions, but Mina to me stands as being very relatable. That, and I ship the hell out of her and Mai.
Other characters I feel vary. Bobby is an angel in secret who doesn't remember how he acquired his wings. For the most part, I feel that he is flat. He is willing to date Ayane despite not feeling that way about her just so she could be happy is something I would say should be noble, but...it comes off as being too dishonest. Mouse, my second favorite, is an odd young woman with an evil and good side who does...things...She doesn't have as much as any word bubbles to express what she's saying. She smashes tacos with mallets so she could drink it with a straw; she gets easily amused over the oddest of things. Just...just watch what she does. It'd be hard to really explain the gist of what I am trying to say without visuals. Nutt is the leader of the Krunky Punks and Bobby's nemesis here being a devil to his angel. He can use his blood to make armor and spikes and he also has some depth to him such as having a mother who was in prison for killing his abusive prick of a father in self-defense. Principal Morrigan is one of the antagonists of the cartoon, the sadistic leader of the Maximum Institute and Mai's archenemy. She is without a doubt one of the most powerful fighters in the series and has a ring where she fights students that received detention. However, despite this, she isn't completely evil one instance being where she saved some of her students from falling debris making it apparent that regardless of whether she was good or evil, she was still strong.
The animation is great. It compliments the slapstick humor the show uses. Here, both genders get a lick. Men and women get kneed or kicked in the groin to comedic effect; girls get an elbow to the boob or whatever else to get their breasts injured. I love how the animator even employs soundbits from Tom and Jerry. It just makes it all the more hilarious. Really, I love the humor because of how raunchy it is. The action scenes are also great. I guess my only issue, which is minor, is often with the characters, when they are glancing at something else, their pupils seem to take on a different size. Though like I said, it's mostly just a posing issue which is ignorable.
For story, it can often be hard to follow because of there not being any speaking in the show and that the watcher often has to rely on the description of the video to get some hints at what to know, but it overall starts off as kind of episodic before slowly gaining arcs. As such, missing an episode would only hurt you if you go to watch any episode blind. Despite all that, it is a fun series that I do recommend if you love slapstick comedy.
