Stars without Number, or SWN, is an excellent system, for both beginners and veterans alike. Its simplicity and room for story can open up limit possibilities for players and G Ms alike. Rules with Character gen number at about 60 pages, making it very easy and simple for newcomers to understand the system and use it.
The only issue with the game is the large burden it places upon the already humbled GM's back. Thankfully there are resources to auto gen a sector for the GM, it leaves much of its fleshing out and creation up tot he GM. So I suggest having an experienced GM to lead the game.
