Perfect the way it is

SPOILER ALERT!

Several people dislike the Evangelion ending. I can see why. So did I. You have this show with robots fighting angels, full of characters with various and conflicting personality traits, and complex plot, and when you finish it:

Disappointment.

The well known reason for the ending being the way it is is due to Gainax running out of budget which becomes more apparent as the series run on. Due to the fans complaining, a movie was released two years later to see what was actually going on.

Although I did enjoy the movie, by looking at the series differently now, I have the opinion on everything which you can see in the title.

Why? Not just because Anno made a movie so we could see what was meant to happen, but because the ending of the series is the way it is.

Think about it. The entire series might have a very complex high tension plot about robots and angels and biblical references, but over it all comes an important theme: Shinji.

Yes, Shinji is the central theme. Not in a way of being a hero or something, but rather how he sees himself. A lot of people have called him a pussy due to his angst; but isn't it to be expected? His mother died when he was young. His father abandoned him and only called him when he needed him, barely caring about him. His father only wanted to be reunited his wife Yui which albeit understanding, still didn't prevent him from being abusive towards Shinji, who Yui cared for.

The central theme of Evangelion (the series) is Shinji coming to realization that it's only him that thinks he's worthless and simply only thinks nobody likes him because he was thought to think like that because he was alone all his life. All of the robot and apocalypse stuff, although sounding exciting is secondary.

Even though the last episodes weren't planned, I am very glad they came out like that. As much as I like The End of Evangelion, it didn't have any important message like the original did (though had they not run out of budget it might have). But on the other hand, one might think that the original last two episodes take place in Shinji's head after he is turned into LCL.

In the end, I am sad most fans didn't get the message of the original ending, because it is actually what the show was what show was overall: self-loathing/insecurity/depression.

Afterall, Hideaki Anno had it.

The original ending did have a meaning: Shinji rejected the easy solution he was faced with and decided to keep struggling to learn how to fit into society and accept himself.

But yeah, glad you liked it ^_^

While I wouldn't say its perfect for me personally, I agree that Evangelion is a very imaginative and creative series. If anything, Anno has a real vision and EVA at least tries to do something interesting with traditional anime.

Glad you enjoyed it.

It's good you liked it, but I have to point out that EOE was the originally planned ending.
