Bound in Holy Geek-tromony: Danna ga Nani Episode 1

Rating: ★★★★★ Genre: Slice of Life, Comedy

Danna ga Nani o Itteiru ka Wakaranai Ken -or, in English, I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying- is a series of twelve episodes, each three minutes long. Witty, dry, and sarcastic, the anime tells the story of newlyweds Kaoru and Hajime, a "normal" office lady and an otaku respectively.

That being said, let's delve into episode one, titled "How I Got Into Hobbies I Don't Understand."

Episode 1 one opens to Kaoru and Hajime's recent marriage, with Kaoru sporting black hair -presumably died, since the series has her with blonde hair for the majority of its season 1 run- and in a rather pretty dress. The wedding scene then cuts to their honeymoon night, offering up the first bits of wry humor the show offers.

A minute in brings us to Kaoru talking about her "soulmate": namely, Hajime. It's here we learn that he's an otaku, and a major one at that. Bonus: the creators throw in dozens of references, so keep and eye out for all the popular anime they show in the background, and -naturally- through Hajime's often deadpanned statements.

Kaoru goes on to state that she just doesn't get anime, but there's never any teasing or animosity on her part: she gets that her husband's different and still loves him for it. At times, she even tries to imitate things he likes, such as "moe", which comes off quite funny.

To be honest, that's the most endearing part of these vignettes: Kaoru may be "normal", but she still loves Hajime, even if she doens't get his quirks, though she is quick to scold him for leaving his porn laying around. Kaoru is never negative though: she takes things in stride and tries to understand Hajime as best she can.

Episode 1 really got me hooked. I'm glad that these episodes are so short: you can easily marathon them in a matter of an hour, and still have enough time to load up all of Season 2, which finishes on 6/25/15. If you're looking for something a bit quirky, definitely hilarious, and endearing, search no further: Danna ga Nani is definitely for you.
