... Awesome

While story is a great component for any fighting game, the story here... disappoints. Not that I could give a shit anyway, because Nether Realm actually focused on what mattered... the fighting. The Variations system essentially gives you 72 characters to work with. Sadly, like every other fighting game in existence, there are some really easy, borderline brainless characters to work with (Hey there Takeda).

Fighting is actually a gratifying experience this time around, with all the nice, if somewhat subtle, tweaks to the engine. Delayed Wakeup in particular is a Godsend for dealing with really fucking annoying spammers. Better is that the individual variations have exclusive combos, and properties on some moves will change; Trust me, it's going to make choosing the best variation a bit of a challenge.

Kontent on the other hand, is quite stripped down in comparison to MK 9, but that doesn't mean there isn't a crapton of stuff to be found here, it just doesn't quite live up to it's predecessor. The Krypt's redesign is quite amazing, almost functioning like a Survival Horror, with jumpscares to boot! (Sadly the jumpscares get really irritating, all the more since they're random.)

Flawed story and quite stripped down kontent aside, the easy-to-understand-hard-to-master mechanics for the more Competitive people, and the straight up goriness and OT Tness for the more Casual crowd, will win over regardless. Now whether Nether Realm can keep this momentum going is anyone's guess, but for now, FACE ME IN MORTAL KOMBAT!

(MK THEME PLAYS)

8.5/10
