A Meh Out of Spooky

Dead End, one of Cartoon Hangover's various shorts, is clever but doesn't offer up much plot-wise. As with any horror comedy there's a fine line between the two genres and this short leans too far heavily on its comedy to provide an engaging story or a creepy cartoon, making it seem like the genre is a horror parody of sorts, but falling short of that category as well.

The comedy present is in fact pretty good, nothing to provide gut-busting laughter, but a few smart scenes will at least make you do that weird thing where you blow more air out of your nose instead of laugh.

Each character present is nothing really groundbreaking, lovable buffoon Barney, adorable talking pet Pugsley (he's certainly no Catbug though), and internet specter Pauline all act as fine pieces in the show, with exceptional voice actors behind them. Blogger Norma however is a very fun representation of the internet blogger and Cameron Goodman fits her nicely. While all the characters have a good to great capacity for comedy, none presented anything at all noteworthy in relation to a plot which was somewhat disappointing.

If this short was simply there as a comedy, I'd say it was a fine job, nothing revolutionary, but certainly worth the quick watch if you've got nothing better to do. However, given the short's ending and the fact that many shorts on the channel seem to be aiming to get serialized in the wake of Bee and Puppycat, I don't think it would be wrong to assume the creators would like a series. Since there's not much in the way of plot, I feel the horror comedy routine would get old quick, especially given the nature of the characters.

I like the show's setting, and though I'm personally not a fan of the art style that's more of a subjective point. As a short, Dead End is alright, like I said before, nothing revolutionary and some decent jokes, but as a series It's hard for me to see Dead End being successful.
