A Recommended Classic

Sgt Frog suffers from a terrible curse of the creative arts: by innovating, it sacrifices its popular appeal, as anyone can see from its view counts relative to something like DBZ Abridged. Regardless, I can attest that this show is among the best abridged series available on the internet, and definitely one of the most original and unique.

This is one of those shows that doesn't recycle a plot and add laughs, but really takes the characters and story in completely different directions. And basically it works; there are plenty of well-placed special effects, the writing is top notch, the humor well paced and the characters deep enough for you to care about as you laugh at their misfortunes. The Midnight Frogs even have a couple of the leading characters (spoiler alert, literally) running a separate audio blog to distract you from the main series and add some padding to the abridged series' original mythos. If it's depth and meatiness you want in a show, then Sgt Frog is for you.

Thing is though, you can't get into this series if you like another; it really doesn't have parallels out there, at least none that this reviewer has encountered. In my experience, this show really shines when you get to know the creators, their style of writing and their sense of humor; when you're starting out though and the whole thing's new, Sgt Frog Abridged can seem a little bit out there, and some of the laughs might sail over your head. So, not recommended to anyone who fancies traditional humor and finds alternative stuff boring.

Sgt Frog Abridged, in my opinion, achieves what every abridged series should aspire to: you prefer it to the original. If you feel like something different, something deep and something that will make you think and feel real emotional attachment, I couldn't recommend it higher. This show really toes it with the best.
