Fun, if flawed.

Death Battle is the fun alternative to sifting through forum threads to find out which character would beat who in a fight. The animation is often spectacular (By web standards I mean, it's great.) with decent research done on both parties. And some decent commentary from the two hosts. And if they have a personal bias toward a certain character, they don't really let it show.

I can appreciate that the duo don't let fanboyism blind them when it comes to deciding a match, and I can also appreciate when they don't give a character a win just because of popularity power. I mightn't have agreed with every match outcome (I'll always love Doomguy more than MC), but at the same time I know not to get too wrapped up in a show like this.

That all said there are flaws. As if often the problem with web-series, there's no real schedule to the show, so you can go weeks and weeks without hearing a peep about the next episode. In addition, the show has a tendency to match characters up based on similarities they have while ignoring any massive gaps in power between them (e.g Superman vs Goku and He-Man vs Lion-O.)

Also, maybe it's just me, but some of the match-ups seem like weird choices to base entire episodes around. Bomberman vs Dig-Dug? Really? And Ivy vs Black Orchid? Was there really such a demand for that match in particular? Oh yeah, and the comment sections for the videos can be wretched hives.

In the end, if you sit back and try not to get too wrapped up in any personal fanboyism, you can have some real fun with this show.

Most of the fights are requested and even if the gaps in power are great, usually it's only apparent to many once they see all the findings on the table. I had no idea the level between Superman and Goku, mostly because I've seen the full extent of either of them respectively.

I kinda figured they had to go through with Goku vs Superman, regardless of how uneven the match is. Because fans wouldn't stop bugging them otherwise.

That said, I figure that after a few minutes of researching Lion-O and He-Man's abilities, they'd see the gap in power doesn't make for a good fight. But, well, that's just me.

I know, but still people want to know the answers. XD Not everyone will be happy with what happens to their faves, but you can't claim they don't do the research or they're biased.

Yes, but the research isn't thorough enough and flawed.

Some outcomes seem very, very improbable - throw a genetically engineered raptor and Yoshi in a pit, and the raptor is going to destroy Yoshi.

But all in all, it's good fun. There may be some cheap tricks from time to time, but it's all good fun.

Come sail your ships around me, and burn your bridges down.

Like I said, I only ever disagreed with one or two outcomes. Still, it's just a show, so people shouldn't act personally insulted if their favourite character loses.

Indeed, some episode matchups come right outta nowhere.

To this day, I am still baffled as to how Blanka vs. Pikachu came to be and why Ben/Chad/Jordan thought that was a good idea.

"Let's have a cute little electric rodent with no trainer to guide him go up against a giant electric man-beast who has spent his whole life hunting smaller electrical animals and give it an ending which is sure to piss many pokemon fans off!"

My mind be baffled, good sir.

Well in cases like that, I think they like to go for 'joke' match-ups just to break up the routine. I mean hell, why else would Goomba vs Koopa exist if that wasn't the case?

How is their research flawed? It's pretty thorough from what their team of researchers post before matches. Also it's not like the guys can post everything they find before fights. It'd take way too long. Did that with Goku and Superman and that was about 15 minutes total.

Also, as for the Riptor thing, I finally got that it was a reference to the Killer Instinct series and that is basically a "Fatality". Knock the opponent from a great height only to crash into a car. Weird, but a smart joke. I never played the games so I never caught on until now. XD Wonder if they'll keep that in the reboot.

There were only one or two aspects of their research that I didn't like. Like how they tried to make Master Chief's 'luck' a factor in his battle. Since luck isn't exactly a quantifiable or predictable thing.

That said, they can squeeze a lot of things into the brief time they allocate to each character. I mean hell, bringing up things like Torquasm Vo and Spider-Man's pesticide weakness were rather surprising to me.

Except that's actually brought up in the game and story as to why Cortona picked him to be the one to carry her around. He's got a lot of luck. Plus it's fun way to tie in the fact he's always happening to stumble onto weapons no matter where he goes and how little sense it makes sometimes.

Well for Superman it was because that was the fight everyone wanted to see so they could leave no stone unturned in describing what they were capable of. And I didn't even know Spider-Man had that weakness. But still weaknesses are usually always covered in superhero fights.

But again, sometimes everything can't be put out or the break-down would end up being longer than the fight itself, otherwise it'd be a bit disappointing I think.

The breakdowns are always longer than the fights.

True, but you can't have it be too long in comparison.

I think the thing that sets this show apart from others is that they try to do science and reasoning to determine the winner. Granted, you're not necessarily going to get hard, concrete measurements when it comes to the world of fiction, but it's worlds better than the voting systems employed by places such as Deadliest Fiction wiki.

The fights in DB are meaningful because you know that they have spent days, weeks, sometimes months pouring over official resources and breaking out their thinking caps. In other words, taking the debate seriously. On other sites, whenever I see "Who would win? Vote here now!" I groan. I remember a really troll-like and ignorant comment in this video by hypermariosunshine, "This is more accurate than Deathbattle, Deathbattle is unbalanced". In case you didn't click the link, it was a Machinima video that was basically a rundown of and a vote for either Luigi or Tails.

I would have put in my own sarcastic comment here, but the aptly named voiceofreason4677 replied to hypermariosunshine's comment almost verbatim from my thoughts, "Right... because allowing a group of fans who may already, before even seeing the content of this video, have already made up their mind, is so much better than a detailed statistical and reasoned analysis. Because reasons... fuck it let the fans choose."

Dare I say it, I would rather see the reasoning behind the winner and not the battle instead of vice versa. The fanfics and conclusions of other blogs and shows are lost when

Oops. I didn't finish the last sentence. I would have wrote "their decisions are unsupported by reasoning or facts." after "when".

I'm not saying they don't as I can't say I have evidence of this, but most of that information is already on the internet, be it in a fan page, official page, etc. I never saw information that I thought I wouldn't had found in a wiki (yes, even spiderman's pesticide weakness).
