Zayn might actually beat out Niall and possibly even Harry, if only because of all the coverage of the Internet Backdraft against Zayn for posting pictures of him and his family celebrating Muslim holidays. Or you're on Tumblr, where Zayn is often popular with people who don't even like the band.

...because really, Zayn is by no measure in the running for most popular member. That Muslim holidays thing happened a long time ago and didn't leave that much of an impact.

I'd say a case could be made for both. Harry and Niall are the most popular 1D fans, but Zayn is shockingly well-loved by non-fans.
