    Characters

Chris Green

Chris Green - Chris Green is the main protagonist of On the Grind. He is 21 years old, and has been working at The Grind for three years. He loves his job, and is eternally optimistic, even though the customers are often rude and insulting to him. He isn't very intelligent, and is known to be highly gullible as well. He is very efficient at his job, to the point that he can work a morning rush by himself. He aspires to finish his education, in order to open his own coffee shop. Chris is also single, and due to his love of comics and video games, hasn't expressed an interest in dating, though he has a close friendship with Tanya Cruz.

Tanya Cruz - Tanya is a Shift Supervisor at The Grind, and Chris's closest friend while at work. She is 26 years old, and is a single parent to a five year old son. She is very efficient at her job, like Chris, but she doesn't allow the customers to treat her the way they do to him. She's a very direct person, to the point of being rude, and isn't afraid to insult someone if she feels like they are doing something that she considers "stupid". She's been known to insult customers and even her manager, Nate.

Nathaniel "Nate" Jackson - Nate is the store manager at the Grind. He is in his mid-to-late forties, and has two small children. Nate is a very nice person, similar to Chris, but is consistently being pressured into performing discplinary action against his employees by his twin brother, Sam, who is also his direct supervisor. Nate is a huge pop-culture buff and comic book nerd, like Chris, but he is far more expressive in this regard. He once attempted the Harlem Shake by himself, but it was recorded and uploaded online by his children. He writes up his employees almost daily, as a result of having a "Write-Up" Quota. He spends most of his time at work in the office reading webcomics. Nate is married, though no one has ever seen his wife.

Claire Marshall - Claire is Nate's assistant manager, though her official title is still Barista. She was originally a shift supervisor, but an incident between her and Chris earned her a demotion. Still, she acts as Nate's unofficial assistant. She is very rude, and bosses around all the employees in the store. Rumor has it she is bitter about a failed career as a professional dancer. She is 32 years old.

Kevin "Hatch" Marshall - Claire's younger brother, and Chris's best friend. Kevin is unemployed, and spends a lot of his time at Chris's house playing video games. His nickname comes from the fact that he is always asking Chris to "hook him up" with food. He is 22 years old.

The Customers - The customers come in all shapes sizes and colors. Most of them either have outlandish orders, or are very rude to the staff, especially Chris.

The Coffee Beans - The Coffee Beans are anthropomorphic coffee beans that reside in the coffee bags at The Grind. They are on a futile mission of survival, since they are usually killed/brewed at the end of every comic. None of the employees are aware that they can move or talk.

    history
On the Grind was created in the fall of 2008, when creator George Gant was working at Istria Cafe, a coffee shop located in the Hyde Park Neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Previously, Gant has worked for both Starbucks and Caribou Coffee in prior years. The comic was originally hosted by Drunk Duck, until 2012, when the comic made the move to Comics Sherpa. In September 2012, On the Grind was signed by Hound Comics, and its first book, ''The Worst Day Ever: The First On the Grind Treasury'' was released on February 13, 2013.

    The Worst Day Ever
The Worst Day Ever front cover

The Worst Day Ever is a 10-strip storyline that took place in August of 2012, that highlights the worst shift in Chris Green's career as a barista. He is awakened at 4:30am on his day off, by his supervisor Claire, in order to come in to work, due to someone calling off. Chris arrives at work in the rain, but is scolded by Clare for coming in late, despite it being his day off. He is promptly written up. After a rough morning rush, he finds himself cleaning the bathroom after a customer left it a mess. It is this time when he is asked to stay late, and work a double. By the mid afternoon, he is exhausted, and he finds himself closing his eyes for a short while between customers. Claire finds him asleep, and sprays Windex on his face, waking him up. He is then written up again for sleeping. After Chris complains about being called in on his day off, to work a double, no less, and Chris explains to Claire that it was his birthday as well. She offers him a muffin, hands him the write up, then sends him on his way. Chris contemplates quitting his job for the first time in years. Eventually the day ends, and while at home, Chris calls his manager Nate, and tells him about the day. Nate becomes irate that Claire has been handing out write up slips, especially since she isn't authorized to do so. The next day, Nate makes Claire and Chris switch positions for a day. Chris attempts to make Claire clean the Men's room, with a toothbrush. Claire skips out on the task and goes home. Chris shrugs his shoulders and cleans it up himself, then pities Claire for not being capable of doing his job.

From The Worst Day Ever Storyline

The storyline is the basis for the book, The Worst Day Ever: The First On the Grind Treasury, which went on sale February 13, 2013.
