I don't think that's the joke. I've checked Wiktionary, Dictionary.com, Urban Dictionary and the Online Slang Dictionary, and while there are slang and vulgar instances of the word "log", including one which means "a piece of faeces", none of them have anything to do with masturbation. It sounds like a genuine reference to the Captain's Log from Star Trek.
